Description

The sophistication and depth of tannin here is impressive. Again a lick of cleverly used, integrated oak hiding behind the fruit that will disappear completely with a little time in bottle. The extra year already sees it resolving. Silky, super fine grape tannins run the length of the palate with lingering fruit of energy. The graphite and mineral thing happening. Even with one extra year the complexity is building. Fresh clean and precise wines with plenty more to come.

The 2019 Cornas Confidence shows a bit of toasty oak up front (30% new wood is standard for this cuvée), then develops notes of crushed stone, red plums, mint, violets, cassis and raspberry sherbet. Full-bodied, velvety and long, it’s an intense, complex thrill ride of Cornas that just needs several years in the cellar. (1/2022)

Why is this Wine so Yummy?

About

The Durand brothers, Eric et Joël, specialize in Syrah planted over 20 hectares in St-Joseph, St-Peray and Cornas.

“Among the under-the-radar producers in the northern Rhone …. the wines warrant more attention while pricing is quite friendly given the quality delivered.”
Josh Raynolds, Vinous

In the Vineyard

The vines are planted on steep hillsides and all work is carried out by hand, organically, on these granitic soil and rock.

In the Winery

The winery is impeccably clean and modern, the brothers destem nearly all fruit, depending on the vintage. There is daily cap-plunging and pumping-over, the wine spends 12-15 months in 20% new 228 and 600 litre barrels, the balance is in cement. The wines are superbly crafted.

They are fruit-dense, have freshness, vibrancy and brightness and are typically rich and spicy.

The 2020 & 2019 Vintage at Eric et Joël Durand

The Durand brothers had started picking two days ahead of my arrival, starting with their Saint Péray and then harvesting some Cornas and white Saint Joseph on the previous day. It was the payoff for a summer of difficult work in the vineyards, and despite the threat of rain on the coming weekend, I could sense their feeling of relief that at least the vintage was finally underway. While 2021 was undeniably more difficult than the previous years, that didn’t mean 2019 and 2020 were without their own challenges, said Joel. He described 2019 as more tannic and concentrated, while 2020 is “plus facile et souple.” He seemed to prefer the 2020s. “The challenge [in 2019] was to preserve some fruit and freshness with alcohols in the high 14s.” The past couple of years, the brothers have been putting the fruit in cold storage prior to beginning fermentation, as they think it helps preserve aromas and freshness in the finished wines.

Lastly, the 2019 Cornas Confidence is all Syrah that was 70% destemmed and spent 18 months in 30% new barrels. A classic wine from this estate, it brings tons of richness and depth in a pure, clean, quasi-modern style while still being pure Cornas to the core. Dark fruits, ground pepper, game, violets, and spice all give way to a full-bodied, wonderfully textured, balanced 2019 with the texture and balance to offer pleasure today yet also evolve for two decades. (2/2022)

Glass-staining ruby color. A highly perfumed bouquet evokes ripe red and blue fruits, vanilla and candied violet, complemented by suggestions of exotic spices, olive and woodsmoke. Smooth and fleshy in style, offering lush black raspberry, boysenberry and spicecake flavors that are supported by a core of zesty acidity. Rich yet vibrant in style, finishing appealing sweet and very long, with velvety tannins and a lingering licorice note. Made with one-third whole clusters and raised in oak barrels, one-third of them new.

Rich and juicy, particularly for Cornas, with waves of red currant and blackberry compote rolling through. There's more defining chalk, savory and olive accents on the back end and a singed alder frame around it all. Needs a bit of time to finish knitting together, but this is very, very solid. (11/2021)
