Description

The ‘Rocche dell’Annunziata’ Cru Barolo and ‘Roccardo’ Langhe Neb from Rocche Costamagna remind me of the first time I tried Benevelli Pierro’s wines. Instant appeal with balance, purity, and, sophistication. Ripping Neb’s that you could easily crack any night of the week and twice on Sunday. The ‘Rocche dell’Annunziata’ has great line and length of both tannins and fruit flavours. A deceptive delicacy adds a level of harmony that entices. Nebbiolo is so much more about complex aromas and flavours, this one has both, with the classic tar and roses to boot.

Rocche Costamagne is one classy producer of Neb.

You can also grab the ‘Roccardo’ Langhe Nebbiolo from Verduno on the Northern border of Barolo

Why is this Wine so Yummy?

The Nebbiolo grapes come exclusively from the vineyard “Rocche dell’Annunziata”, one of the historical crus of La Morra. The vinification again is traditional, with a maceration which can last about two weeks.

The wine is then aged for 24 months in large Slavonian oak barrels, and then fined for at least one year in the bottle. Elegant and soft to the palate, it is characterized by the fruity notes of raspberry and a floral and spicy nose.

The Rocche dell’Annunziata Vineyard

It is one of the four historic vineyards in La Morra, together with Brunate, Cerequio and La Serra, and certainly the best area in the hamlet of Annunziata. Rocche refers to the highest part of a hill. The parcel slopes down from 347 m a.s.l. to 320 m a.s.l. and most of it is devoted to the growing of Nebbiolo grapes. The vineyard has a south-west aspect and is blessed with ideal growing conditions for producing our Barolo Rocche dell’Annunziata and only in the best vintages

The Rocche Costamagna Winery

After the downfall of Napoleon I and the Congress of Vienna, many officers of the French army moved into the Langhe. They built several fortified buildings in the area on the model of French fortresses. Our winery was built around 1814-1815 and still preserves its original long, narrow structure – an example of fortified architecture.

A visit is worthwhile – the vaults and the thick wet walls of bricks and local stone are a backdrop to the ranks of Slavonian oak casks in which wines are aged and the bottles of Barolo that are fined for a year before being sold.
This building has ideal temperature and humidity conditions to store wine for ageing in wood or fining in glass.
