Resistance was futile, I had to crack one of these (May 2023). Kelley's note is bang on. Though it has certainly resolved a little since his tasting. I concur that waiting a decade will offer up something special. The missing piece of the tasting note jigsaw, texture. Important for Pommard given the significant evolution from structured wine produced by the village to the seamless, refined elegant tannins of this and many other examples. Revisited in bottle, the 2019 Pommard 1er Cru Les Epenots is already very expressive, bursting with aromas of plums and raspberries mingled with peonies, rose petals, sweet spices and orange rind. Medium to full-bodied, melting and sensual, it's charming and enveloping, with an ample core of fruit and a long, saline finish. The 2019 Pommard 1er Cru Les Rugiens has also turned out very well in bottle, wafting from the glass with aromas of plums, orange rind, peonies, exotic spices, loamy soil and cinnamon. Medium to full-bodied, layered and fleshy, it's rich and textural, with lively acids and an ample core of fruit framed by ripe, powdery tannins. Ben does such a great job in the Côtes-de-Beaune. There's a certain harmony that comes across in the reds he makes here. It makes sense given his familiarity with the region following his time at Comte-Armand. He talks of his efforts to shift the styles of the Pommards from rustic and super tannic to more perfumed and supple. Notwithstanding the Clos des Epeneaux, Leroux has always said that if there was one 1er Cru that would tempt him back to Pommard it would be Les Rugiens. Background hints of wood can be found on the ripe and nicely fresh aromas of poached plum, black cherry and violet. Well I couldn't find a review of this and haven't had a chance to taste it. Given the other 9 wines from 2016 and 2017 I've tried it's hard to see this being anything but true to form and simply put a 2017 version of the 2016!My Note on the 2016:Opens with juicy crunchy fruit that takes just a little while to settle in.
