Côte du Beaune

Meursault

Meursault is one of the three great White Burgundy villages along with Chassagne & Puligny. Many would argue that there are a few other villages vying to join the three.

Sandwiched between Puligny-Montrachet and Volnay, Meursault’s wines naturally vary from plot to plot, they have the potential to show the polar opposites of richness through to great elegance and delicacy. Soil composition and exposure providing great diversity.

For mine the most exciting Meursault wines show a delicacy, transparency, weightlessness with tension while still have a depth and length of flavour to match their standing in the hierarchy from Bourgogne to 1er Cru. Meursault having no Grand Cru vineyards.

98% of Meursault’s production is white wine.  Whilst it has no Grand Cru’s. It has a cluster of Premier Cru’s next to Puligny-Montrachet and a second cluster next to Volnay.

The Appellation used to describe the wines depends on the variety, Pinot or Chardonnay, and the adjacent Appellation. For example, the cluster next to Volnay uses the Appellation Volnay-Santenot for the red Premier Cru’s. This makes sense when you consider the reputation for reds from Volnay. Whites from the same area use Meursault Premier Cru.

The key on the map details all of the different naming conventions.

Look out for the White Meursalt Premier Cru’s Charmes, Perriers, and, Genevrières. The best-known producers are Roulot, Comte Lafon & Coche Dury. There are many others making stunning wines.

In total there are 18 Premier Crus.

There is a vague whiff of the exotic to the ripe, fresh and pretty aromas of roasted nut, mineral reduction, white peach and tangerine peel. There is superb intensity and cut to the dense and tautly muscular medium weight flavors that exude a subtle minerality on the youthfully austere and impressively persistent and distinctly lemony finish. This is terrific for its level and recommended. Outstanding Top value ♥ 2026+Allen Meadows, Burghound 91 Points

Domaine Henri Germain Meursault ‘Limozin’ 2022

Chardonnay | Meursault, Burgundy

“Another wine that has only partially completed its malolactic fermentation is the 2022 Meursault Le Limozin, a medium to full-bodied, satiny and fleshy wine that's broader and more voluminous than the taut Chevalières. Offering up reductive aromas of pear, hazelnuts and iodine, it concludes with a long, mouthwatering finish.” William Kelly, The Wine Advocate 91-93 Points

The 2023 Meursault Les Chevalières wafts from the glass with notes of buttery citrus fruit, white flowers, green apple and hazelnuts, followed by a medium to full-bodied, satiny and saline palate that's bright and mineral. The racy style of this site works well with the inherent generosity of the vintage. William Kelly, The Wine Advocate 90-92 PointsThe 2023 Meursault Les Chevalières (not Premier Cru as I mistakenly wrote last year!) has a very cohesive bouquet with light white flower

Domaine Henri Germain Meursault ‘Limozin’ 2023

Chardonnay | Meursault, Burgundy

From lower down the slope, the 2023 Meursault Le Limozin is more exotic, bursting with aromas of honeyed orchard fruit, orange oil and musky peach, followed by a medium to full-bodied, satiny and layered palate that's pure and enveloping, concluding with a saline finish. William Kelly, The Wine Advocate 90-92 PointsNaturally exotic aromas are comprised by notes of jasmine tea, acacia and freshly sliced pear. A ripe and naturally exotic nose features notes of Asian-style tea, anise, white peach and a whiff of fennel. The relatively generously proportioned medium weight flavors exude a subtle bead of minerality on the very dry and youthfully austere finish that also possesses a touch of bitter citrus character. Lovely juice and this is really quite classy. 2028+ (from an incredible 2.7 ha holding which makes Bouchard the largest owner).Allen Meadows, Burghound 91-93 Points

From Les Casse-Têtes and Meursault Les Murgers de Monthelie. “This is aromatically similar to the Clousots but with more floral elements. There is even better volume and mid-palate density to the muscular medium weight flavors that coat the mouth with dry extract on the overtly powerful finish where a hint of bitter lemon arises. This is a very serious Meursault villages that should amply repay up to a decade of cellaring. This too is recommended. ♥ 2026+Burghound

Discreet wood influence sets off ripe and expressive aromas of petrol, acacia blossom and hazelnut. The bigger-bodied and more powerful medium weight flavors possess reasonably good mid-palate density while exhibiting a taut muscularity on the youthfully austere, firm and serious finale that also flirts with rusticity. This is classic Poruzots though one that should be approachable after only 5-ish years. Drink: 2030+ ♥ OutstandingAllen Meadows, Burghound 90-93 Points

A more floral-suffused nose features very bright and fresh aromas of Granny Smith apples, essence of pear and a variety of citrus influences. There is again excellent volume and richness along with even more apparent minerality on the complex and beautifully persistent finale that flashes focused power. This too offers first-rate quality for a villages-level wine. Outstanding Top value ♥ 2027+Allen Meadows, Burghound 92 Points

Chardonnay | Meursault, Burgundy

Moderate sulfur pushes the aromas of hazelnut and acacia blossom to the background at present. The rich, caressing and punchy flavors possess an appealing energy and brightness on the palate while exhibiting sneaky good length on the focused and linear finale where once again there is a trace of warmth. ♥ OutstandingAllen Meadows, Burghound

“The 2023 Meursault Poruzots 1er Cru has a lovely bouquet with dried honey, almond and walnut scents blossoming in the glass. The palate is very well defined, with gorgeous apricot and Clementine notes, a silver bead of acidity and a poised finish that belies that slightly higher alcohol content.
