Meursault

Meursault is one of the three great White Burgundy villages along with Chassagne & Puligny. Many would argue that there are a few other villages vying to join the three.

Sandwiched between Puligny-Montrachet and Volnay, Meursault’s wines naturally vary from plot to plot, they have the potential to show the polar opposites of richness through to great elegance and delicacy. Soil composition and exposure providing great diversity.

For mine the most exciting Meursault wines show a delicacy, transparency, weightlessness with tension while still have a depth and length of flavour to match their standing in the hierarchy from Bourgogne to 1er Cru. Meursault having no Grand Cru vineyards.

98% of Meursault’s production is white wine.  Whilst it has no Grand Cru’s. It has a cluster of Premier Cru’s next to Puligny-Montrachet and a second cluster next to Volnay.

The Appellation used to describe the wines depends on the variety, Pinot or Chardonnay, and the adjacent Appellation. For example, the cluster next to Volnay uses the Appellation Volnay-Santenot for the red Premier Cru’s. This makes sense when you consider the reputation for reds from Volnay. Whites from the same area use Meursault Premier Cru.

Look out for the White Meursalt Premier Cru’s Charmes, Perriers, and, Genevrières. The best-known producers are Roulot, Comte Lafon & Coche Dury. There are many others making stunning wines.

In total there are 18 Premier Crus.

A ripe and naturally exotic nose features notes of Asian-style tea, anise, white peach and a whiff of fennel. The relatively generously proportioned medium weight flavors exude a subtle bead of minerality on the very dry and youthfully austere finish that also possesses a touch of bitter citrus character. From Les Casse-Têtes and Meursault Les Murgers de Monthelie. “This is aromatically similar to the Clousots but with more floral elements. There is even better volume and mid-palate density to the muscular medium weight flavors that coat the mouth with dry extract on the overtly powerful finish where a hint of bitter lemon arises. Discreet wood influence sets off ripe and expressive aromas of petrol, acacia blossom and hazelnut. The bigger-bodied and more powerful medium weight flavors possess reasonably good mid-palate density while exhibiting a taut muscularity on the youthfully austere, firm and serious finale that also flirts with rusticity. A more floral-suffused nose features very bright and fresh aromas of Granny Smith apples, essence of pear and a variety of citrus influences.
