Just like 2019 was no ordinary vintage in Burgundy, Louis Jadot is no ordinary Negociant! With close to 160 years of experience and owning more than 150 hectares of vineyards across Burgundy (70 Ha of which lie in the Côte d’Or), Chef de Cave Frederic Barnier has extraordinary control over his fruit source from top to bottom. In a great year such as 2019, the wonderfully warm, sunny summer resulted in magnificently ripe and healthy berries even in the more marginal appellations. In short 2019 is a vintage which will not disappoint from Village, Premier Cru and Grand Cru alike. As Frederic Barnier said “The wines will rival the best we have made in a very long time”

… I was seriously impressed by the overall quality Jadot produced in 2019. Moreover, the quality is largely good everywhere, even in typically ignored communes such as Nuits. And I was really impressed by their stunningly good wines from Volnay and Gevrey.

Allen Meadows, Burghound

Burgundy has shifted in through a cycle dominated by negociants who purchased barrels of wine and bottled them under their own name to growers bottling under their own name, often without using the vineyard names, then adding all of the Cru and Lieux Dits names.

In that time the negociants shifted to taking greater involvement in vineyards, and owning vineyards.

The best has invested heavily in their owned vineyards, working with vineyard owners to raise the quality of their fruit, and evolving slowly to find the balance between time tested winemaking techniques and innovation through science.

Louis Jadot has been able to carefully navigate the changes in Burgundy, and smoothly transition custodianship from Jacques Lardière, a veteran of 42 vintages at Jadot, to Fréderic Barnier who has lead Jadot since 2012.

About Maison Louis Jadot

Maison Louis Jadot was established in 1859 by Louis Henri Denis Jadot and developed by succeeding generations. In 1985 their US distributor Rudi Kopf purchased the business while also purchasing Domaine Clair Daü (which brought with it Grand Crus of Chambertin Clos de Bèze, Bonnes Mares, Clos Vougeot and Corton Grèves).

Domaine des Héritiers Louis Jadot has long belonged to the Jadot family and includes the original Louis Jadot Monopole Beaune Premier Cru ‘Clos des Ursules’ vineyard, purchased in 1826, plus Corton Pougets  and Corton Charlemagne. Pierre Henri-Gagey, current President succeeded his father André Gagey in 1992 and today his son Thibault is deeply involved in Louis Jadot. Domaine Gagey has been in their family for generations, and includes great vineyards in Clos Saint Denis and Echézeaux.

Domaine du Duc de Magenta is not strictly owned by Louis Jadot, but is on a very long term, exclusive contract for the Chassagne Montrachet Premier Cru Morgeot ‘Clos de la Chapelle’. In the 1990’s Louis Jadot invested in vineyards such as Côte de Nuits Villages Le Vaucrain and Beaujolais Chateau des Jacques Moulin-a-Vent and Morgon, and began working their own cooperage, Cadus, based in Ladoix.

Enjoy these fascinating podcast with Levi Dalton & Jacques Lardière who look after Jadot for 42 vintages and his successor Frederic Barnier. As Levi notes, you’ll definitely have to listen to the one with Jacques twice to even start to get your head around the discussion.

In the Vineyard

The Louis Jadot Domaine (comprised of 125 hectares over 28 communes, 298 parcels and 45 growers) is spread across three geographic centres, each working with its own team and its own tools, which minimises Louis Jadot’s carbon footprint across the broader Burgundian region.

In the Winery

From Frederic Barnier via Burghound

The fruit was essentially spotless save for some sunburned berries that sorting tables now remove easily. Yields were not great though to be fair, neither were they truly dismal as the chardonnay came in between 33 and 35 hl/ha and the pinot was basically between 30 and 34 hl/ha. Interestingly, the potential alcohols were essentially the same for both colors, ranging as they did between 13.8 and 14.2%. I chose to use a bit of whole cluster, but it wasn’t systematic. I used a light hand with the extractions as it would have been easy to have had an excess of tannins. The fermentations passed easily and the malos for many reds were finished before Christmas. By contrast, I chose to block on average 50% of the malolactic fermentation to help them retain more natural acidity. As to the wines, they have excellent energy and transparency with good mid-palate fat. As such, 2019 should be one of those vintages that will provide early drinking pleasure but also reward at least mid-term cellaring.

Red Winemaking at Louis Jadot

Louis Jadot’s wineries are the envy of any serious winemaker. Blending simplicity of tried and tested techniques & equipment with the possibilities science and technology offer.

2019 Côte d’Or vintage report by Frederic Barnier

“2019 vintage was a particularly dry growing season that began with a very dry winter that did not refill the underlying ground water like it normally does. The vegetative cycle once again began early…raising the risk of early season frost, which unfortunately occurred on the 5th and 14th of April…The cold on the 14th didn’t do much damage as everyone was organised but the cold snap on the 5th did do a fair amount of damage, especially in the lower areas and in Chassagne. The hopes of a normal crop size were further hurt when the flowering did not pass well, particularly for Chardonnay. Add to this late June and July heat waves…. Welcome rain in August relieved any hydric stress and allowed veraison to get going early…Warm weather and strong winds in early September saw the grapes develop great levels of concentration and accelerated ripening…”

The Whites

The poor flowering and fruit set coupled with the hot, dry conditions in June & July resulted in yields about 50% down. There is no lack of concentration on the whites, and the balance between sugar levels and acidity is very good thanks to exemplary pH levels. The management of the malolactic fermentation was critical, average around 50% blocked to retain natural acidity. The wines have great energy and transparency, with good mid-palate weight.

The Reds

For the reds, ripeness levels were ideal, and yields a little higher than for the reds. Any concerns that the skins of the red grapes wouldn’t worry were needless. To the contrary, what we’ve seen is an astonishing level of finesse and the wines from this vintage are already extremely tasty. The colours are rich and the fruit reassuringly fresh.

About the Wines

THE WHITES

2019 Chevalier Montrachet Les Demoiselles Grand Cru Domaine Louis Jadot

Louis Jean Baptiste Jadot bought back the vineyard in 1913 from two sisters and decided to name it « Les demoiselles ». This vineyard had already belonged to his grand-father who had bought it in 1845.

The subsoil is extremely chalky with a lot of stones, perfectly drained and easy to overheat with south-south-eastern exposition

96 Points

This too is quite intricately layered if markedly more restrained as it mixes notes of floral and citrus with those of spice, pear and mineral reduction, all of which is trimmed in soft oak nuances. There is outstanding volume to the intensely mineral-driven broad-shouldered flavors that are also imposing but noticeably more refined on the youthfully austere, overtly powerful and gorgeously long finish. I very much like the interplay of fruit, acid and dry extract and this beauty of a Demoiselles should be capable of amply rewarding longer-term cellaring. 2034+

Allen Meadows, Burghound

94-96 Points

The king of the cellar this year is the 2019 Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru Les Demoiselles (Domaine des Héritiers Jadot), a superb effort that unwinds in the glass with inviting aromas of citrus oil, white flowers, fresh bread, crisp orchard fruit, toasted almonds and honeycomb. Full-bodied, layered and multidimensional, it's satiny and structured, with a ripe but chiseled profile that exemplifies the vintage at its best.

William Kelly, The Wine Advocate

2019 Montrachet Grand Cru Maison Louis Jadot

94-97 Points

Hints of wood toast and petrol add breadth to the ripe, elegant and admirably pure notes of citrus confit, jasmine tea, acacia, lavender and assorted white orchard fruit. Here is excellent richness to the full-bodied and opulent but focused big bodied and imposingly powerful flavors that also possess plenty of dry extract while exhibiting huge length to the compact, serious and built-to-age finale. While note always the case, in 2019 the Montrachet is more understated than the Demoiselles.

Allen Meadows, Burghound

94-96 Points

Aromas of buttered toast, honeyed peaches, white flowers and mint introduce the 2019 Montrachet Grand Cru (Maison Louis Jadot), a full-bodied, layered and enveloping wine that's satiny and sumptuous, with lively acids and fine depth at the core. While I'd give the nod to the tunning Demoiselles as Jadot's best white wine this year, this Montrachet—purchased from the Chassagne-Montrachet side, from the house's usual source—is undeniably promising.

William Kelly, The Wine Advocate

2019 Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru Folatières Domaine Louis Jadot

The Folatières climate lies near the summit of this slope, above Clos de la Garenne roughly midway between Meursault and Montrachet.
The clay and chalk soil, which is very stony, drains well and warms through easily.
This wine is vinified and then aged in wooden barrels for 12-15 months before bottling.

93 Points

(from En la Richard). Subtle wood influence surrounds the beautifully layered and mildly exotic nose of passion fruit, dried apricot and fennel whiffs. The caressing and rich but intense and tautly muscular flavors are blessed with an abundance of sappy dry extract that buffers the very firm acid spine shaping the impressively lingering finale. Excellent. 2031+

Allen Meadows, Burghound

92-94+ Points

The 2019 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Folati res (Domaine des H ritiers Jadot), which derives from lieu-dit En la Richarde, exhibits aromas of pear, orange oil, white flowers and toasted bread. Medium to full-bodied, layered and multidimensional, it's satiny and complete, with lively acids and a bright, mineral finish. This is very promising.

THE REDS

2019 Louis Jadot Bonnes Mares Grand Cru Domaine Louis Jadot

The Bonnes Mares vineyard lies at the edge of Chambolle Musigny and which one part spill into Morey Saint Denis.
The calcium content of the soil which gives the wines of Chambolle Musigny their great delicacy, is less pronounced, and compared to le Musigny, Bonnes Mares is more robust, yet still extremely elegant.

93-96 Points

(100% from the Chambolle side that combines about one-third terres rouges and the remainder from terres blanches). Liqueur-like aromas of plum, kirsch, rose petal and violet are trimmed by notes of oak and menthol. There is decidedly more volume, if decidedly less refinement, to the big-bodied and markedly powerful flavors that possess an abundance of sappy dry extract that imparts a lovely texture to the intensely structured, muscular and impressively persistent finale. This is a buy and forget you own it wine for at least 10 years and a wine that should amply repay 20+ years. 2039+

Allen Meadows, Burghound

94-96 points

Deep and elegantly muscular, the 2019 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru (Domaine Louis Jadot) is a layered, fleshy but tightly wound wine evocative or orange rind, rose petals, sweet berry fruit and raw cocoa. Full-bodied and concentrated, with a long, mineral finish, it will reward bottle age.

William Kelly, The Wine Advocate

2019 Louis Jadot Chambertin Clos de Bèze Grand Cru Domaine Louis Jadot

93-96 Points

Interestingly, this is aromatically quite similar to the Chapelle though as is usually the case, it’s even spicier. The exceptionally rich big-bodied flavors possess outstanding mid-palate volume and concentration thanks to the abundant dry extract that coats the palate and does a fine job of buffering the very dense but fine-grained tannins on the powerful and strikingly long finish. This is a knockout but be prepared to be patient if you wish to experience this potential gem at its peak. 2039+

Allen Meadows, Burghound

95-97 Point

The 2019 Chambertin Clos de Bèze Grand Cru (Domaine Louis Jadot) is extremely promising, unfurling in the glass with aromas of rich, plummy fruit mingled with orange rind, exotic spices, raw cocoa and espresso roast. Full-bodied, layered and velvety, it's muscular and concentrated, with lively acids and a long, penetrating finish.

William Kelly, The Wine Advocate

2019 Louis Jadot Chambertin Grand Cru Maison Louis Jadot

The origin of Chambertin comes from one of the owners whose name was Bertin and who had the idea to plant vineyards close to the climat used by monks. Chambertin comes from Champ de Bertin.
The Chambertin vineyard is situated on a chalky soil in the depth and clayey at the surface, which makes the wine both powerful and round.

93-95 Points

This is aromatically cooler and more restrained with a touch of herbal tea adding breadth to the crushed wild red berry, spice, leather and sauvage hints. There is again excellent volume and overt power to the broad-shouldered and tautly muscular flavors that exude plenty of minerality on the superbly long finish. This doesn’t have quite the same depth as the Clos de B ze but there is ample time for that to change. 2039+

Allen Meadows, Burghound

91-93 Points

The 2019 Chambertin Grand Cru (Maison Louis Jadot) is showing nicely, opening in the glass with notes of sweet berries, spices, loamy soil, licorice and toasty new oak. Medium to full-bodied, fleshy and succulent, with fine tannins and good length on the finish, it should turn out well. 91-93 points

William Kelly, The Wine Advocate

2019 Louis Jadot Chapelle Chambertin Grand Cru Domaine Louis Jadot

The « Chappelle Chambertin » vineyard is situated on the east facing slope between Latricières Chambertin Grand Cru and Chambertin Clos de Bèze Grand Cru.

93-95 Points

(from En Gémeaux: these are the oldest vines in the Jadot portfolio of owned vineyards) Moderate amounts of wood and menthol surround the nicely spiced aromas of red and dark raspberry that flavors that terminate in a very compact, powerful, and beautifully long finish. This is already wonderfully complex, but structurally it’s a complete block today so plenty of patience advised. 2036+

Allen Meadows, Burghound

93-96 Points

One of the highlights of the range, the 2019 Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru (Domaine Louis Jadot) mingles aromas of sweet red berries with hints of raw cocoa, spices, licorice, loamy soil and truffles. Medium to full-bodied, deep and multidimensional, it's velvety and concentrated, with considerable depth and mid-palate amplitude despite its elegant, seamless profile.

William Kelly, The Wine Advocate

2019 Louis Jadot Echezeaux Grand Cru Domaine Louis Jadot

92-95 Points

(from Les Rouges du Bas thatis worked by horse because it is so steep; occasionally other Ech zeaux is added from purchases but in 2019 thisis a Domaine wine). A much spicier if less earthy nose is more deeply pitched with its aromas of poached plum, exotic tea, black cherry and a whiff of sandalwood. The round, supply and surprisingly forward mid-palate of the medium-bodied flavors contrasts immediately with the very firm, markedly powerful and moderately austere finish. This too is excellent and while it’s not a refined Echezeaux (examples from les Rouges du Bas rarely are), it is not only imposing but offers fine development potential as well. 2036+

Allen Meadows, Burghound

93-95 Points

The 2019 Echezeaux Grand Cru (Domaine Louis Jadot) is very promising, exhibiting incipiently complex aromas of raspberries, cassis, candied peel, burning embers and potpourri, followed by a medium to full-bodied, charming and vibrant palate that's broad and enveloping, with
lively acids and fine, powdery structuring tannins.

William Kelly, The Wine Advocate

2019 Louis Jadot Clos Vougeot Grand Cru Domaine Louis Jadot

91-94 Points

In contrast to the usual brooding nose this wine displays, it’s surprisingly expressive, indeed even perfumed with its array of essence of red berries, earth and pretty floral suggestions. There is a lovely texture to the otherwise concentrated and powerful full-bodied flavors that also coat the palate with sappy dry extract that also helps partially buffer the very firm tannic spine shaping the austere, grippy and compact finale. This is clearly going to require time. 2036+

Allen Meadows, Burghound

92-94+ Points

Muscular and powerful, the 2019 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru (Domaine Louis Jadot) opens in the glass with aromas of cherries, sweet berry fruit, raw cocoa, spices, rose petals and licorice. Full-bodied, layered and concentrated, with rich structuring tannins and lively acids, this is built for the long haul.

William Kelly, The Wine Advocate

2019 Louis Jadot Corton Pougets Grand Cru Domeine des Hértiers

92-94 Points

This is actually quite aromatically similar to the Corton-greves though with a bit more elegance. The elegance continues onto the sleekly muscular middle weight flavors that also exude evident minerality on the moderately austere finale that offers both very fine depth and length. This also possesses excellent development potential and is a wine that’s going to need at least a decade first. 2036+

Allen Meadows, Burghound

93-95 Points

The 2019 Corton-Pougets Grand Cru (Domaine des H ritiers Jadot) is excellent, unwinding in the glass with notes of cherries, plums, orange rind, dark chocolate, sweet spices and toasty new oak. Medium to full-bodied, fleshy and layered, it's deep and concentrated, with broad shoulders and rich, powdery structuring tannins. As usual, this is a fine proposition for the medium- to long-haul.

William Kelly, The Wine Advocate

2019 Louis Jadot Corton Grèves Grand Cru Domaine Louis Jadot

90-93 points

Abundant menthol and wood nuances are present on the ripe aromas of black raspberry and sauvage scents. The dense, plus and less powerful flavors also exude evident minerality on the austere, focused and balanced finish that isn’t quite as complex. Note that this classic Corton is also quite compact and in need of extended cellaring. 2036+

Allen Meadows, Burghound

92-94 Points

Mingling aromas of sweet berry fruit and plums with hints of raw cocoa, warm spices and orange rind, the 2019 Corton Gr ves Grand Cru (Domaine Louis Jadot) is medium to full-bodied, rich and chalky, with fine concentration and a youthfully tightly wound profile. This is promising, but it will require a bit of patience.

William Kelly, The Wine Advocate

2019 Louis Jadot Chambolle Musigny 1er Cru Les Fuées Domaine Louis Jadot

The Chambolle-Musigny vineyards is unique in the Côte de Nuits for the chalky composition of its soils just over a hard rocky bedrock which stresses the vines.
Les Fuées is situated just near the Bonnes Mares Grand Cru vineyard. There are a lot of hard stones. It has an East exposure.

92-94 Points

This is aromatically similar to the Baudes except it’s spicier still. The plump and rounded medium-bodied flavors also possess excellent volume, concentrated and focused power that culminate in a more mineral-driven, moderately austere and impressively lengthy finale. This is a big Fuées as it’s rare for it to be even more structured than the Baudes. Patience strongly advised. 2034+

Allen Meadows, Burghound

92-94 Points

The 2019 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Fuées (Domaine Louis Jadot) reveals scents of berry fruit, spiced plums, sweet soil tones, licorice and peonies. Medium to full-bodied, rich and layered, it's lively and vibrant, with refined tannins and fine length on the finish.

William Kelly, The Wine Advocate

2019 Louis Jadot Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Clos Saint Jacques Domaine Louis Jadot

The « Clos Saint Jacques » vineyard is located at the beginning of the valley called Combe de lavaux. It is very nicely South-East oriented. There are only five owners of this prestigious Clos, which may have deserved the Grand Cru Appellation when the first official classification was decided.

92-95 Points

Slightly more subtle, though still moderately prominent, wood sets off the very spicy, cool and elegant aromas that consist mostly of red and dark currant and iron-inflected earth. There is very good volume and verve suffusing the refined and classy middle weight flavors that brim with minerality and dry extract where the latter helps to buffer the very firm tannic spine shaping the compact, powerful and strikingly long finale. This excellent effort will likely need a minimum of 10 years before it can be reasonably approached and should reward up to 20 years of keeping. 2036+

Allen Meadows, Burghound

93-95+ Points

The 2019 Gevrey- Chambertin 1er Cru Clos Saint-Jacques (Domaine Louis Jadot) is very promising, wafting from the glass with aromas of raspberries, cherries, warm spices, candied peel, rose petals and smoke. Medium to full-bodied, layered and muscular, with serious concentration and rich reserves of ripe, powdery tannin, it concludes with a bright, precise finish.

William Kelly, The Wine Advocate

2019 Louis Jadot Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Estournelles Saint Jacques Domaine Louis Jadot

The « Estournelles Saint Jacques » vineyard is situated on that Southeast facing slope, at the begining of the Combe Lavaux, on top of Lavaux St Jacques and near Clos St Jacques. There are similarities in the soil comosition between thoses premiers crus and the grands crus.

91-93 Points

This too is quite aromatically cool and even more elegant with its spicier array of red currant and discreet newly turned earth scents. The understated and equally refined medium weight flavors don’t possess the same power, yet the most delicate mouthfeel is highly appealing, all wrapped in a youthfully austere and markedly stony finale. Like the Feusselottes, this is textbook ESJ.. 2031+

Allen Meadows, Burghound

92-94 Points

Opening in the glass with scents of cherries, cassis and blackberries complemented by hints of forest floor and raw cocoa, the 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Estournelles Saint-Jacques (Domaine Louis Jadot) is medium-bodied, bright and fine-boned, underpinned by lively acids and displaying a delicate, elegant profile. This is shaping up very nicely.

William Kelly, The Wine Advocate

2019 Louis Jadot Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Cazetiers Maison Louis Jadot

The « Cazetiers » vineyard is situated on that easterly exposed slope, nearly at the same altitude of the Chambertin Grand Cru vineyards, and bordering the Clos Saint Jacques. It is considered to be one of the best Premiers Crus.

91-94 Points

(from Petits Cazetiers) Here too the wood treatment is no longer subtle though it stops short of dominating the pungently earthy humus-inflected mix of red and dark wild berries. There is outstanding volume to the delicious and plump but powerful large-scaled flavors that terminate in a mouthcoating, balanced and built-to-age finale. This possesses excellent development potential though it’s not so structured that it couldn’t be approached after 7 to 10 years even though it should easily reward 15+. 2034+

Allen Meadows, Burghound

90-93? Points

Rich and dramatic, the sample I tasted of the 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Cazetiers (Domaine Louis Jadot) was a little marked by its  levage, a liberal application of toasty new oak mingling with its bouquet of sweet berry fruit. Medium to fullbodied, fleshy and nicely balanced, I suspect it wasn't showing its best when I encountered it.

William Kelly, The Wine Advocate

2019 Vosne Romanée 1er Cru Les Suchots Maison Louis Jadot

« Les Suchots » consists of two continuous parcels between Romanée Saint-Vivant and Richebourg on the South side, and « Les Echezeaux » on the North side.

90-93 Points

(from both the lower and upper portions). Here too the nose is exuberantly spice and quintessential Vosne in character with its slightly more elegant nose of red and dark currant, clove, soy and star anise nuances. The supple and relatively forward medium-bodied flavors possess a caressing, even seductive, texture that also firms up as it sits on the mouthcoating , youthfully austere and sneaky long finale. At least some patience is advised. 2031+

Allen Meadows, Burghound

91-93 Point

Aromas of cherries, ripe berries, plum preserve and spices preface the 2019 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Suchots (Maison Louis Jadot), a medium to full-bodied, layered and fleshy wine with a generous core of fruit, ripe tannins and succulent acids.
