Red Blend from Ribera del Duero, Castilla y León
The 2021 Flor de Pingus is a village wine from La Horra, made with small vinifications by plot and then a blending exercise, so it’s the wine they feel is most their style. They look for texture, looking for a delicate and elegant wine. The nose is very subtle and harmonious, super clean and with a lot of focus. There are no traces of oak on the nose. The profile of the wine is more in line with 2018 or 2016 than with 2015 or 2019. This has a velvety texture, an elegant mouthfeel and so
Red Blend from San Vicente de la Sonsierra, La Rioja
The single-vineyard red 2021 Camino de Ribas comes from a plot, La Cóncova, under the Toloño peak close to Rivas de Tereso, a hamlet from San Vicente de la Sonsierra, possibly the coolest zone, with a north-facing exposure, a place with shallow soils with sand, limestone and sandstone and full of aromatic herbs. It's a blend of 50% Tempranillo, 40% Garnacha and the rest Viura, Jaen, Garnacha Blanca, Palomino and other white varieties. It fermented with a long and soft vinification with some wh
Garnacha from Gratallops, Priorat
I had the pleasure of devouring the 2016 about 18 months ago over an aged scotch fillet with a friend. A wine of presence and importance. Along with the other Priorats I've had from Àlvaro it's clear he's got it right in both the vineyard and the winery. After all, to make a wine like the legendary L'Ermita you need mad skills!Even just after landing in the country when wines are a little out of sorts from shipping across the world, the perfume builds in the glass with all the trademark
Garnatxa from Gratallops, Priorat
Incredibly bright and energetic red fruits. Excellent depth and length. Wonderful shape, fine long with a gentle dusting of plush, supple tannins with a slatey twist. So layered and harmonious. Compost and straw in a nice way complimenting fruit of incredible richness and length. Sophistication in a glass.
Garnatxa from Porrera, Priorat
Mas Martinet Els Escurcons Garnatxa 2019 Dark and brooding. Again excellent. Opens wonderfully with power and restraint. Very sophisticated. The play of the two varieties is excellent. Energy from grenache and dark, brooding mystery from carignan. Red fruit with earth, savoury with baking spices and quence. Superb texture. Again the elevage is bang on. Class act!
Garnatxa from Poboleda, Priorat
Fresh energetic, fragrant fruit. The blend plays well giving a long even palate. Excellent slatey long fine tannins. That play between red and blue fruit with, savoury, earthy layers and a little subtle oak playing at the edges.. A beautfiul perfume with exceptional acid that marries the fruit and tannins perfectly.
Garnacha from Gratallops, Priorat
I had the pleasure of devouring the 2016 about 6 months ago over an aged scotch fillet with a friend. A wine of presence and importance. Along with the other Priorats I've had from Àlvaro it's clear he's got it right in both the vineyard and the winery. After all, to make a wine like the legendary L'Ermita you need mad skills! The single-vineyard 2017 Finca Dofí comes from ten hectares that were planted 20 years ago in the village of Gratallops. It’s mostly Garnacha with 8% Cari
Palomino from Jerez de la Frontera, Anadlucía
The first iteration of this wine I drank was the 2018, a seriously impressive wine. It wasn't your grandmother's Sherry and nor is the 2021.Made in the style of bygone regional traditions, the De La Riva Vino de Pasto is a non-fortified aromatic table wine made with Palomino from the El Notario plot in pago Macharnudo. It's personality is influenced by a period of time in lightly ullaged barrel under florLuis Guitiérrez comments that from 2019 Willy and Ramiro have tried to reduce the e
If 2008 felt cool and Atlantic, the 2009 Roda I could be described as Mediterranean, from a warm and healthy vintage. Here they aim for black fruit character while the regular Roda should show red fruit. The grapes are sourced from over 30-year-old vines and is mostly Tempranillo with some 5% Graciano. It matured in first and second use French oak barrels for 16 months. It's a warm vintage, without reaching the heights of 2011, but there was some stress in the peak of the summer, which in some w
Monastrell from Penedès, Catalunya
Incredible! Toasty development shows on opening quickly making way for an energetic perfume as the wine opens beautifully freshening and building energy. Excellent length and depth. Quite delicious, wonderful chalky, phenolic, texture graced by a cleansing bitter line. The mousse is complete and seamless. Subtle cereal character akin to a great Vino di Pasto. The core of flavour has a transparency and delicacy complexed by fresh green and woody. Such is the importance of this gastronomic wine
I tased again the stellar 2016 Gran Reserva 904, which is nothing short of being spectacular and a textbook example of the grand traditional style. It was produced with 90% Tempranillo and 10% Graciano from a selection of vineyards in search of balanced wines with silky tannins, good acidity, character, length and aging potential. The élevage is long, four years in used barrels that average 4.5 years of age, during which time the wine is manually racked every six months. It's ripe with 14.5% al
Thrilled to be able to offer my thoughts on this special wine. Lunch with the full current release set from La Rioja Alta was thrilling. The wines are a demonstration of respect for the past and judicious use of modern technology combined with an approach that offer a style reminiscent of a refreshed classic. No fads here!A seamless, harmonious delight. Superb secondary to tertiary development whilst maintaining exceptional freshness for a wine aged this long. Earthy and savoury with faint l
