Côte-de-Nuits
Like Gevrey-Chambertin, Chambolle-Musigny is completely planted to Pinot Noir. However, the styles associated with the respective appellations present an intriguing contrast. Where Gevrey-Chambertin has a reputation for powerful, structured Pinot Noirs, Chambolle-Musigny typically offers more delicate expressions. This is not to suggest that Chambolle-Musigny is a wilting violet; rather its intensity manifests in more subtly, with soft tannins and pretty aromatics.
Chambolle-Musigny is home to two superb Grands Crus: Bonnes-Mares, which links its vineyards to those of Morey-Saint-Denis, and the great Musigny vineyard, which overlooks the Clos de Vougeot. The village also boasts among its fine wines the prestigious Premier Cru, Les Amoureuses.
The appellation’s sloping vineyards face east at altitudes of 250-300 metres with only a shallow covering of soil overlying the parent rock, but fissures in the hard Jurassic limestone allow the roots to seek nourishment deep within the sub-soil. Boulders and gravels in the valley bottom ensure good drainage.

Here too the nose is fresh, bright and quite pretty with its essence of red pinot fruit, spice and floral nuances. The supple and generous yet punchy medium-bodied flavors also possess an appealing mouthfeel as well as more evident minerality on the ever-so-mildly austere finale.Allen Meadows, Burghound 89-91 PointsThe Chatelots vineyard (2.96 hectares) is also close to the town and partly adjoins Les Charmes. A more deeply pitched nose proffers its aromas of plum, black cherry, anise, floral and discreet exotic tea wisps. Gorgeously textured and caressing middle weight flavors possess both good richness and punch while displaying a very subtle bead of minerality that adds a sense of lift on the compact and lingering if ever-so-mildly tangy finale.Allen Meadows, Burghound 90-92 PointsNote: from a .75 ha parcel of 50+ year old vines

Elegant, pure and airy aromas include those of red and dark currant plus similar hints of exotic tea and crushed anise. The delicious and lilting medium weight flavors are not especially dense but do offer evident minerality that seems to become more prominent on the balanced and moderately firm finale.Allen Meadows, Burghound 90-93 Points “The 2023 Chambolle-Musigny Les Noirots 1er Cru has a pretty, floral, sprightly and carefree bouquet with hints of Morello cherry and crushed s

This is also aromatically really fresh with its blend of dark raspberry, violet and a crushed fennel aromas. The mouthfeel of the slightly richer flavors is also caressing but here there is a subtle minerality on the lacy, balanced and youthfully austere finale that delivers slightly better persistence. Pinot Noir from Chambolle-Musigny, Côte-de-Nuits
Exuberantly fresh aromas of essence of various red berries with a broader array of spice notes leads to detailed, even chiseled, lighter weight flavors that exude both energy and minerality on the understated, firm and moderately austere finale.Allen Meadows, Burghound 89-92 PointsThe Chatelots vineyard (2.96 hectares) is also close to the town and partly adjoins Les Charmes. A more deeply pitched nose combines notes of poached plum and exotic tea with those of violet, lilac and a suggestion of wood. The richer and more voluminous flavors possess more evident power if not the same refinement on the more structured finale. This is also nicely balanced but in contrast to the Groseilles, it’s not likely to drink especially well before 8 to 10 years have passed. Note: from <2 ha of vines in the upper southwest portion of the commune that includes some declassified 1ers from Les Baudes and FuéesA fresh and ripe nose speaks primarily of cool red berries, spice and a pretty floral top note. There is a lovely sense of volume and punch to the supple and delicious flavors that flash surprisingly good power on the impressively long bitter pit fruit-inflected finish where the only nit is a touch of warmth. Check out Burghound's review! Ponsot works a superb 0.6-hectare, old-vine parcel in this renowned vineyard with an average age of nearly 50 years. The site is planted at 12,000 vines per hectare. Ponsot’s vines are at the very top of the vineyard, in line with the top of Les Amoureuses and the bottom of LeMusigny. The outstanding quality of the wine reflects this remarkable terroir and also a remarkable, frost-affected year where the yields were tiny (12hl/ha!). The result is a blockbuster

Note: from younger Musigny vines of less than 25 years of age, the youngest of which were planted in 2007; Lupatelli noted that because so few vines are now less than 25 years of age, the surface area is only about .27 ha and situated in Grands Musigny; 5 barrels produced in 2023This is also quite floral in character with its ever-so-slightly riper array of exuberantly spicy blend of both red and dark cherry, exotic tea and a whiff of dried orange peel. A very fresh and, as one might expect, this possesses the spiciest nose to this point with its wonderfully floral red berry fruit aromas. The borderline painfully intense flavors possess a super-sleek and chiseled mouthfeel that is akin to rolling small rocks around the mouth on the dusty, moderately austere, compact and built-to-age finale. I would strongly recommend not touching a bottle of this beauty before at least 10 years have passed. 2034+ ♥ Sweet spot OutstandingAllen Meadows, Bur

Here too the nose is overtly floral in character with its layered blend of red and dark raspberry, warm earth and discreet spice wisps. There is again very fine mid-palate density to the slightly bigger-bodied tension-filled flavors that flash evident muscle and power on the moderately austere, firmly structured and impressively long finish. Patience strongly advised. 2035+ (from a .24 ha mix of two-thirds terres rouges and one-third terres blanches).Allen Meadows, Burghound 91-94 Points
Pinot Noir from Chambolle-Musigny, Côte-de-Nuits
There is ample earth character to the markedly floral-scented nose of various red berries, soft wood and a hint of smoked game. The beautifully textured, if not particularly concentrated middleweight flavors possess excellent vibrancy as well as focused power that seems to build on the beautifully long finish that really tightens up as it sits on the palate. This is a deceptive wine in that it seems a bit light but delivers superb flavor authority. (from a .70 ha parcel of vines near the Morey b
