Garigue or phrygana is a type of low, soft-leaved scrubland ecoregion and plant community in the Mediterranean forests, woodlands, and scrub biome. It is found on limestone soils in southern France and around the Mediterranean Basin, generally near the seacoast where the moderated Mediterranean climate provides annual summer drought.[1][2][3] The term has also found its way into haute cuisine, suggestive of the resinous flavours of a garigue shrubland. A thread of acid sits in synergy with fine, long, grape-first chalky tannins. On the redder side of the fruit spectrum, showing the touch of skilled hands, particularly during time on skins as the mouthfeel caresses. This is relatively firmly reduced so if you’re tempted to try a bottle young, be sure to give it some air first. Otherwise, there is good power and underlying tension to the medium weight plus flavors that retain solid delineation on the impressively long finish.
