The 2023 Vintage at Domaine Perrot-Minot

by Burghound

Christophe Perrot-Minot briefly commented that the 2023 growing season “was not quite as hot and dry as its 2022 counterpart but it was still enough where some of our vines displayed signs of hydric stress. The fruit set was honestly one of the biggest that I have ever seen so we dropped a lot of fruit, in fact in some vineyards we made two passes! I chose to begin picking on the 9th of September and there was a great deal of sorting, mostly for under ripe bunches but there was a bit of everything. Once that was accomplished though, the fruit was clean and ripe with good but not high potential alcohols in the 12.9 to 13.7% range. I used on average 40% whole clusters for the fermentations where I did a very soft vinification, indeed the word infusion would be apt.

I had no trouble with any of the wines finishing their sugars so there were no technical problems of note. I did however touch up a few wines in terms of their acid levels as the pHs were just a bit too high for my liking. As to the wines, perhaps what I like about them best is how aromatic they are with good complexity as it’s not just a fruit basket. Moreover, they are beautifully well-balanced even if they’re not monsters of concentration.

Overall, 2023 is a very good vintage and while not the best that I ever made, I think it’s more than respectable from a qualitative standpoint.” Perrot rarely misses these days and I warmly recommend his 2023s to your attention as a number of the wines are really quite good. In case anyone missed it last year, as of the 2022 vintage Perrot-Minot lost the leases for several vineyard parcels from the old Pernin-Rossin estate which include the Nuits “Les Cras” and “Les Murgers” as well as the Vosne “Les Beaux Monts”. By contrast, he picked up on an owned basis about .13 ha of the Nuits “La Richemone”.

About Domaine Perrot-Minot

Located in the heart of historically rich buildings dating back to the 16th and 17th centuries, the Perrot-Minot estate bears witness to a long history of passion for the vine. The origins of the estate trace back to the mid-18th century when Étienne de Mermety and Louise le Breton des Chapelles, custodians of the first secrets of the terroir and the initial harvests, established the winemaking activity. During this period, the first interpretations of the estate’s terroirs came to life.

Christophe Perrot‐Minot returned to his family domaine in Morey‐St‐Denis in 1991 after spending several years in Burgundy’s Cote d’Or working as a courtier, or liaison between growers and negociants. Prior to his arrival, his father Henri had operated primarily as a grower, selling the majority of the family production in bulk. With the arrival of his son Christophe, the focus was shifted and all but a small portion of the Passetoutgrain was now being bottled under the Perrot‐Minot label.

Early on, Christophe was determined, and the young, articulate vigneron spent the first several years experimenting and learning. In 2000 he was able to increase the small Perrot‐Minot domaine by purchasing the Pernin‐Rossin estate. The acquisition gave Christophe many old‐vine parcels in the Cote‐de‐Nuits, bringing the total area of the domaine to more than 9 hectares.

With his newly expanded holdings and with the benefit of a decade of experience, Christophe began making wine that forced people to sit up and take notice. His stunning 2002’s launched him into stardom and established Christophe among Burgundy’s elite.

Christophe is now firmly entrenched as one of the benchmark producers in the Cote de Nuits and today his wines have become even more refined than those from a decade ago. The Perrot‐Minot wines of today are focused, intense, but with layers of complexity and balance that showcases their individual terroir. It’s no wonder why Burghound’s Allen Meadows said of Christophe’s wines “Perrot‐Minot continues to make ever more refined wines…the wines are truly becoming increasingly elegant.”

In the Vineyard

The Perrot-Minot estate extends over 8 hectares of vines on the greatest terroirs of Morey-Saint-Denis, Gevrey-Chambertin, Chambolle-Musigny, Vosne-Romanée and Nuits-Saint-Georges.

The vines are all certified organic.

For Christophe Perrot-Minot, this organic path is the only way to offer wines of clarity, transparency, and intense luminosity.

The estate’s goal is not overproduction but to push the boundaries of selection, even at the cost of sacrificing kilograms of grand cru.

Within the team, the focus is never on the cost of rejects. The sole ambition is to push sorting to its highest level, retaining only the best grapes without hesitation. A crucial step in approaching excellence, a perpetual quest for aesthetic perfection.

About the Wines

Gevrey-Chambertin

Domaine Perrot-Minot Grand Cru Chambertin VV

There’s no doubt that Chambertin is considered one of Burgundy’s top five Grands Crus. Its central position on a gently sloping, slightly cool and windy hillside gives it an exceptional texture. At the heart of this terroir lies a deep soil, delicately coated with a mantle of limestone scree and silt, patiently deposited over millennia and interwoven by the meticulous hand of man and his centuries-old cultivation work. Chambertin, slightly less steep than Clos de Bèze, benefits from a cooler breeze, provided by the nearby Combe Grisard, which brings winds from the hills. Ideally facing east, this terroir enjoys the best exposure to the sun, especially the morning sun. Nestled mid-slope, this terroir has a remarkable capacity to absorb water, making Chambertin one of Burgundy’s finest terroirs. The wine’s deep red colour, captivating bouquet, and refined notes of red fruit reveal an exceptional depth and complexity of flavour.

This elegant, pure wine has a spicy nose with dark berries, earth, and subtle oak. Its beautifully balanced, mineral-driven flavors offer deep concentration, firm tannins, and remarkable persistence. Less immediate than others, it unfolds with youthful intensity and a long aftertaste. Rich and structured, it requires patience to reach its full potential. Best from 2035-2050.

The Domaine

93-96 Points

An elegant, pure and once again exuberantly spicy nose blends notes of the essence of dark berries with wisps of earth, forest floor and a background hint of oak. The gorgeously pure middle weight flavors possess solid mid-palate concentration along with an intense mineral streak while delivering stunningly depth and persistence on the beautifully well-balanced and youthfully austere finish. This possesses outstand development potential but extended patience is highly recommended. Don't Miss!

Allen Meadows, Burghound

Domaine Perrot-Minot Grand Cru 'Clos de Beze' VV

Chambertin Clos de Bèze is regarded as one of the most prestigious and finest grands crus in Burgundy. Its median position on a gently sloping, slightly cool, and windy hillside gives it an inimitable textural quality. At the heart of this land, a deep substratum is delicately layered with limestone scree and silt, deposited over millennia and patiently blended through meticulous centuries-old cultivation. Herein lies the subtle distinction between Clos de Bèze and Chambertin, dictated by the unique composition of Bajocian limestone and marl beds, a dance of mineral elements that evokes a rare geological heritage. Chambertin-Clos de Bèze, perched at an altitude of 270 to 280 metres, features a slightly steeper incline than its neighbouring Chambertin. These two adjacent terroirs, bathed in light, are positioned mid-slope, swept by northerly winds and shielded from rain-bearing westerly winds. The extreme finesse and aromatic richness, coupled with a distinctly floral bouquet, characterise the wines from this plot.

This wine offers a rich, velvety texture with liqueur-like aromas of cassis, plum, and spice. Broad-shouldered yet elegant, it has firm structure requiring long cellaring. More refined than Chambertin, with deeper color, complex nose, and lush black fruit. Vibrant and aristocratic, it exudes purity and intensity. A superb, long-lived wine, best from 2033-2045.

The Domaine

93-95 Points

A very yet fresh ripe nose features liqueur-like aromas of cassis, plum, spice and plenty of floral elements. There is superb richness to the broad-shouldered flavors that brim with sappy dry extract that imparts a wonderful velvety texture on the backward and firmly structured finish that makes it abundantly clear that this is also going to require extended cellaring before it reaches it apogee. I would point out that while this isn't as concentrated as the Chambertin, it's finer and more elegant if not quite as complex.

Allen Meadows, Burghound

Domaine Perrot-Minot Grand Cru Mazoyeres-Chambertin VV

This vineyard sits on soils defined by a limestone gravel substrate, which gives the appellation its unique character. Though shallow, these highly arable soils are a blend of brown and blonde clay-limestone, mixed with gravel. This combination allows for excellent drainage and vine growth. The wines from this plot, planted in 1957, are elegant and precise, offering vibrant freshness, impressive density, and a refined complexity that reflects the essence of the terroir.

A wine that strikes a fine balance between dark fruit and spicy notes, revealing a refined mosaic of aromas. Its texture is rich and expansive, with remarkable freshness that carries through to a lingering, undulating finish.

The Domaine

92-95 Points

An elegant and equally expressive nose is also relatively high-toned with its array of red cherry, anise, tea and pretty floral wisps that include violet, lilac and rose petal. The super-sleek and highly energetic medium weight flavors that conclude in a similar finish that is youthfully austere, long and built-to-age as well as ever-so-mildly more complex, at least for today in any case, which could of course change over time.

Allen Meadows, Burghound

Domaine Perrot-Minot Grand Cru Charmes Chambertin VV

The soil is composed of reddish rendzinas that are thin, stony, and marl-rich in certain areas, scattered with rock tips that indicate a fractured bedrock, which encourages very deep rooting. This vineyard, planted in 1970 and again in 1989, produces elegant and refined wines, with the terroir imparting a distinctive mineral signature that enhances the wine’s freshness with exquisite finesse.

The 2023 Charmes-Chambertin is a noble, imperial purple wine with a succulent nose. It offers a mix of red and black fruits, violet, and orange marmalade aromas. The palate is silky-smooth with brown spices and a peppery finish. This well-balanced, juicy wine requires patience and is recommended for drinking from 2032-2040.

The Domaine

92-94 Points

An expressive and slightly higher-toned nose reflects aromas of just picked red cherry, plum, earth and plenty of forest floor character. There is excellent volume to the middle weight flavors that, like the Chapelle, exhibit focused power on the dusty, youthfully austere and built-to-age finale that is borderline robust.

Allen Meadows, Burghound

*2022* Domaine Perrot-Minot Grand Cru Griotte Chambertin MAGNUM

Located just below Clos de Bèze, almost where it meets Chambertin, this plot unveils the land’s topography in all its splendour. Its rugged slope grants the vines a unique microclimate, likely the warmest among the Grand Crus, with a 5 to 6-day head start over Chambertin. This sun-drenched and early-ripening appellation sits on silts once carried down the valley. This exceptional terroir shapes singular, captivating wines that enchant the senses with a fresh nose and a delicate approach, featuring notes of orange zest, citrus, and red berries.

93-95 Points

Here there is no reductive funk to the ripe aromas of the essence of dark currant, plum, violet and subtle spice wisps. Like the Combe d'Orveau, there is first-rate depth to the solidly concentrated flavors that possess a wonderfully beguiling texture before terminating a well-balanced, youthfully austere and beautifully long finish where a bead of minerality slowly emerges. This is terrific and a wine that should age accordingly.

Allen Meadows, Burghound

Domaine Perrot-Minot Gevrey-Chambertin

This Gevrey-Chambertin village is the fruit of a harmonious blend of two plots: La Justice and Les Seuvrées. La Justice, at the northern end of Gevrey Chambertin, produces wines with a certain aromatic power. Opposite, in the extreme south, Les Seuvrées produces wines whose characteristic finesse comes from their proximity to the climate of Morey-Saint-Denis. These two opposing plots are characterized by clay-limestone soil, giving this cuvée an astonishing duality, combining power and finesse with inimitable grace. When tasted, the wine reveals a genuine aromatic ballet, where subtle notes of orange zest, delicate spices and pepper intertwine harmoniously. This cuvée also displays mineral notes, evoking the iron and vivacity of fresh blood, adding captivating depth. Each bottle embodies the elegance and refinement of Gevrey-Chambertin

This wine reveals wild black currant, forest floor, and crushed cherry aromas with a hint of sauvage. The refined, medium-weight palate is structured by firm yet fine tannins, leading to a lingering, slightly warm finish. With great tension and depth, it can be enjoyed young or aged. Best from 2028-2034.

The Domaine

Nuits-Saint-Georges

Domaine Perrot-Minot Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru 'La Richemone' VV ULTRA

The Ultra cuvées take the concept of terroir a step further, transcending the unique expression of each “climat”.  They sit between Grand Cru & Premier Cru for Domaine Perrot-Minot.

Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru “La Richemone” cuvée Ultra comes from the southern part of the vineyard. This old vine thrives in a unique and rare soil, featuring an exceptional combination of gravel for optimal drainage and deep rooting, along with clay-limestone soil. The richness of this terroir, produces a well-balanced wine that exudes enchanting softness and remarkable freshness, unveiling aromas of spices and silky tannins. The “La Richemone” parcel reveals a wine that is round in character, with depth and outstanding complexity.

The 2023 Richemone is a sophisticated, medium-bodied wine with a reserved nose and fresh red fruit notes. It boasts gorgeously textured flavors, a super-sleek mouthfeel, and intense velvety fruit with considerable length. While not reaching the grandeur of the greatest vintages, it remains an exceptionally fine wine. Deep ruby in color, it’s recommended to drink from 2032-2040.

The Domaine

92-94 Points

This is also sufficiently reduced to reveal nothing but a spice wisp. Much more interesting are the gorgeously textured and more voluminous medium-bodied flavors that also possess a super-sleek mouthfeel, all wrapped in a beautifully well-balanced, dusty and youthfully austere finale. This is could use also use better depth but it's one very stylish wine. ♥ Sweet spot Outstanding

Chambolle-Musigny

Domaine Perrot-Minot Chambole Musigny 1er Cru 'La Combe d'Orveau' VV ULTRA

The Ultra cuvées take the concept of terroir a step further, transcending the unique expression of each “climat”.  They sit between Grand Cru & Premier Cru for Domaine Perrot-Minot.

Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru “Combe d’Orveau” Cuvée ULTRA comes from the lower part of the climat, close to the “Musigny Grand Cru” appellation. This section of the vineyard consists of finer soils rich in silt, contributing greater density, depth, and freshness to a wine that is bursting with floral refinement and a unique aromatic complexity. Planted in 1942, this parcel transcends the singularity of each vintage, with each year adding further depth to the wine. Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru “Combe d’Orveau” Cuvée ULTRA undoubtedly exemplifies the quintessence of the Chambolle-Musigny terroir, enchanting the senses and revealing a remarkable finesse intertwined with exceptional complexity.

This limited two-barrel cuvée from 70+ year old vines near Musigny climat offers a reduced nose but impresses on the palate. It features silky textures, aggressive minerality, and a long, balanced finish. With deep purple color and sensual aromas, it showcases stunning raspberry and strawberry notes. Recommended drinking period: 2031-2039.

The Domaine

92-94 Points

Once again the nose is sufficiently reduced as to reveal nothing of interest. On the palate though the lilting and silky-textured middle weight flavors flash a borderline aggressive minerality that adds a sense of lift to the strikingly long, impeccably well-balanced and Zen-like finale. Like the Richemone, this is really very stylish. If you can find either wine, buy them. ♥ Sweet spot Outstanding

*2022* Domaine Perrot-Minot Chambole Musigny 1er Cru 'Les Fuees' VV

Chambolle-Musigny 1er cru “Les Fuées” lies opposite the renowned “Bonnes Mares” Grand Cru. The soil is of rare elegance, planted in 1945 on a clay-limestone base with rocky and silty layers. This unique combination boasts a vitality that, combined with scattered rock debris, yields profound aromatic nuances. The wine marries dense texture with refined tannins, bringing a beautiful balance to the cuvée.

A rich and expressive bouquet reveals opulent, delightful flavours. The long and elegant finish is marked by a concentrated core of red and black fruits. A wine of exceptional refinement.

The Domaine

90-93 Points

Here the nose displays that curious form of reduction the Burgundians call bourgeon de cassis, or cassis bud character. There is again more volume still to the more concentrated medium-bodied flavors that exude evident minerality on the balanced, serious and even more structured finale. Lovely and I particularly like the fruit-acid-tannin balance.

Allen Meadows, Burghound

Morey-Saint-Denis

Domain Perrot-Minot Morey St Denis 1er Cru 'La Riotte' VV

After replanting a first part of the vineyard in 1989 and a second in 1993, this plot nestled on stony, marly soil reveals all its splendour. The soil is a perfect cradle for the vines to root deeply, drawing out the quintessence of this terroir. This earthy quality produces elegant, straightforward wines characterized by delicate spices and a harmonious dance of aromas. This terroir produces elegant, straight and pure wines, a vibrant testimony to the Morey-Saint-Denis climate.

This wine presents a rich nose of black cherry liqueur, spice, and floral notes, offering freshness and depth. The powerful yet refined palate balances minerality with lush raspberries and emerging white pepper. With great density and energy, it promises excellent aging potential. Best enjoyed between 2030 and 2037.

The Domaine

91-93 Points

Once again the layered of black cherry liqueur, spice and floral-suffused nose is ripe but attractively fresh and layered. There is noticeably more volume to the solidly powerful and well-detailed medium-bodied flavors that possess a refined mouthfeel while exhibiting subtle minerality on the balanced and lengthy finish. This is lovely and a wine that should amply repay a decade or so of keeping. ♥ Outstanding

Allen Meadows, Burghound

Perrot-Minot Morey St. Denis 'En la Rue de Vergy'

This sunny terroir is located just above Clos de Tart and represents a geological symphony. Its soil, strewn with outcrops of rock in places, bears witness to a rare mineral richness. Extremely low in organic matter, this terroir gives the wine an exceptionally deep minerality. Here, the roots of the vines plunge deep into the rocky soil, absorbing the mineral complexity of their environment. The wines from this plot are crystalline, reflecting the influence of the ancient stones in the soil, which impart a distinctive character, exceptional minerality and purity.

A refined and fragrant wine with clearly defined fruit, expressing the elegance of finely textured Pinot. The palate is light and supple, stretching out with precision into a subtle, delicate finish.

The Domaine

89-91 Points

A spicier and more elegant nose reflects more deeply pitched aromas of plum, black cherry and violet. There is both fine richness and a beguiling texture to the succulent middle weight flavors that exhibit evident minerality no the lingering finish where a touch of bitter pit fruit character slowly emerges. This could use better depth so a few years of keeping are recommended. ♥ Outstanding

Allen Meadows, Burghound

Vosne-Romanée

Domaine Perrot-Minot Vosne-Romanée VV

This Vosne-Romanée village is a blended cuvée that expresses finesse, showcasing aromas of red fruit and white flowers. The Ormes plot, planted in 1985, and the Chalandins plot, planted in 2000, reveal their distinctive identities, thriving on a clay-limestone soil where a notable amount of silt mingles with incredibly fertile earth to deliver exceptional richness. Formerly known as “Ormes des Chalandins,” this cuvée features labels whose design may vary across vintages, particularly before 2022.

This wine offers an elegant aromatic profile of spicy purple fruit, black raspberry, jasmine tea, and floral hints. The palate is dense yet supple, with firm tannins and a lingering, balanced finish. While depth could improve, its aging potential is promising. Best enjoyed between 2028 and 2034.

The Domaine

Domaine Perrot-Minot Bourgogne 'La Gouzotte'

The estate owns two vineyards with the regional appellation Burgundy Pinot Noir: they are located in the village of Morey-Saint-Denis. The first plot, planted in 1968, enjoys a prime location that allows it to fully embrace the terroir of Morey-Saint-Denis, characterized by clay-limestone soil and composed of Callovian marls. This mature vineyard yields grapes that, when brought to ripeness, reveal a beautiful concentration. The second plot, planted in 1998, brings a lively freshness, essential to our blending work, due to its youthful character.

Dense flavors with a touch of salinity, a clean, balanced, and delicious finish. A well-made wine, enjoyable young but with aging potential. Bright purple hue, an attractive red fruit nose, and a concentrated palate with ripe tannins and well-balanced acidity. Best to drink between 2026 and 2028.
