Revel in the diversity of white wine styles created, as winemakers seek to balance sugar, acid, alcohol, phenolics, the use of oak, lees, and, skin contact to create wines of harmony and personality.
Perhaps in Riesling more than any other white wine will you find nearly every style imaginable.
The wine world is producing better wines than ever before. In regions where laws permit broad experimentation with growing and making white wines is resulting in rapid evolution and refinement of styles.
Australia’s push to evolve Chardonnay is the perfect example!

Sauvignon Blanc from Sancerre, Centre Loire
There’s Sauvignon and then there is Sauvignon from Sancerre. There’s Sancerre and then there is Dagenau. Then a pack chasing him. Mellot right at the front of that pack. Beautiful poise, delicacy and vertical long shape to the palate. Lovely bright fruit that has shifted beyond primary to aromas and flavours of intrigue. Crisp fine acid. This is an impressive drink. There’s a little passion fruit and gooseberry if you look for it. Overall it’s just a wonderful seemless Sauvignon Blanc.
Chardonnay from Pouilly-Fuisse, Mâcon
“There is a whiff of the exotic present on the petrol-tinged white and yellow orchard fruit scents. There is fine volume to the dense and rich flavors that possess plenty of dry extract on the delicious and sneaky long finish that is shaped by citrus-inflected acidity.”Allen Meadows, Burghound 87-89
For all the many great things that can be told about Giacosa’s red wines, it is the Arneis that maybe typifies the great qualities of Bruno Giacosa the man. In the early 1970’s, this was an indigenous variety almost entirely lost to the region’s obsession with red wines (at the time mainly Dolcetto) that was ‘rediscovered’ by Alfredo Currado of Vietti and Giacosa very shortly after. The two are almost solely responsible for Arneis’ current importance in the region, especially in Roer
Timorasso from Colli Tortonesi, Piedmont
From near extinction the Massa family have saved Timorasso, for that I am truly thankful! Massa’s Derthona is the perfect introduction to the serious end of the spectrum of Timorasso.Excellent build in depth and length with excellent oxidative line that sits perfectly with fine acid and insane lemon oil.Closed and a little subdued on the nose on opening. A richer iteration that has been tamed by a master craftsmen to offer us a textural, phenolic, luscious and every so slightly oily
A unique Soave, this wine along with Il Corincino's Verdicchio 'Gaiospino' was one of the first two wines that sparked my interest in Italian wine. It's a rich, textural interpretation of Soave, with great harmony, hints of spice, lovely phenolics (giving texture) and length. The age of the vineyards is reflected in the depth of fruit. FYI - Vecchie Vigne means 'Old Vines' and these are pre-phylloxera from a sandy sub-plot of the La Foscà vineyard."The 2016 Soave Classico Contrada Salv
Chardonnay from Pouilly-Fuisse, Mâcon
“The slightly denser aromas transmit a vague hint of the exotic in the form of melon and pineapple hints on the mostly white fleshed fruit aromas. There is excellent intensity and precision to the solidly concentrated middle weight flavors that exude a refreshing salinity on the equally dry and sneaky long and overtly bitter lemon-inflected finish. This too offers very good quality for its level.”Allen Meadows, Burghound 88 Points“The 2020 Mâcon-Prissé En Chailloux unfurls i
Producer and site … that is all! When your Bourgogne is made from vineyards in Meursault and Puligny it really does make a difference. Ballot-Millot has given us a beautifully balanced wine, with a wonderful texture. An excellent Bourgogne with great fresh flavours & a little funk. Drinking beautifully now and good for a few more years.Update Sept 2024: Drinking beautiful, in a great place. The above note still holds true with an added sense of seamless harmony."Ripe and ni
Chardonnay from Chablis, Burgundy
Showing exactly how important vine age is! A step up, an extra zip of salty acid and that mid palate weight with excellent length. Florals, white stone fruit a little citrus pith and plenty of fun. That slight primary edge that disappeared as it opened revealing excellent depth and length with restraint. A little more complexity. Mid palate texture is excellent. Hazelnuts and an extra layer of pleasure here. Excellent.
Riesling from Mosel, Mosel-Saar-Ruwer
"“Harvested at about the same time as the Grosses Gewächs (GG) and thus about four weeks after the Kabinett Rieslings, the 2020 Brauneberger Juffer-Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese opens with a pure, fresh and remarkably delicate slate bouquet that is already singing. On the palate, the wine is lush yet filigreed and finessed and provided with delicate, lingering salinity and finely concentrated, perfectly ripe fruit. This gorgeous wine was matured two-thirds in steel and one-third in casks. High
