White Wine

From racy, crisp, Riesling, to rich full-bodied Chardonnay the white wine world has an incredible array of wine styles on offer.

Head to the Rhône Valley, where you’ll, Viognier, Roussane and Marsanne with their amazing textures and spice. Cross the border to Italy and it’s Arneis, Verdicchio, Greco, Carricante, and, Garganega offering up often flavours very different to those of Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.

Revel in the diversity of white wine styles created, as winemakers seek to balance sugar, acid, alcohol, phenolics, the use of oak, lees, and, skin contact to create wines of harmony and personality.

Perhaps in Riesling more than any other white wine will you find nearly every style imaginable.

The wine world is producing better wines than ever before. In regions where laws permit broad experimentation with growing and making white wines is resulting in rapid evolution and refinement of styles.

Australia’s push to evolve Chardonnay is the perfect example!

Ansitz Waldgries Südtiroler Weissburgunder Riserva ‘ITOS’ 2020

Weissburgunder | Trentino-Alto Adige, Italy

What he achieves by a combo of half vinified in stainless steel and half the ferments in barrel, is the ideal melding of the racy with the complex and textured. A pretty flash Weissburgunder AKA Pinot Bianco! Excellent drinking. A layer of that shroomy, wet wool earthy funk I often see, and enjoy in high acid whites. White flowers perfume. Ripe white grapefruit. Counterpointed with a little stonefruit, fresh and zippy. Chalky acid with a dusting of phenolics adds cleansing grip. Superb long

Delicious spiced, pear, perfumed with flowers, almost flinty, lovely phenolics, textural and fine, long and even, gentle, flowing, resolved. Savoury. Subtle layered intrigue. Fine acid profile. Bloody fun wine. The last time I had a Chasselas it was from an old planting in Victoria the origin of which I can’t remember. I ended up buying cases of it as a cleanskin for personal consumption. Its memory prompted me to try this wine from the “vineyard in the sky”. From the incredibl

Domaine de Beudon Petite Arvine AOC Valais 2020

White Blend | Valais, Switzeland

Lovely perfume and lift, textural almost Viognier & Traminer-seque. Big slippery oily phenolic texture. Exceptional perfume spice, marzipan, quince and fejoa, jasmine white flowers, great intensity. Very good. Delicacy with intensity and intrigue! A variety rarely seen outside Valais, Switzerland. Its standing demonstrated by attempts from Angelo Gaja and Michel Chapoutier to work with this somewhat belligerent grape to grow. From Valais in Switzerland and one of the world’s

New Cuvée from 2021 – A parcel in chaume worked separately. This terroir is often used for sweet wines. Makes a great dry according to Thomas (...and Me!) highlighting again the importance of the flavour and phenolics from the skins. Yields of just 15-20Hl/Ha from very old vines give us a wine that is a delight in the glass! Half to ⅓ of DRC's yields!  Fermentation in new wood aged in the same wood for 1 year then 5 months in stainless. This is the same as for the Bastingage. F

Georges Deschamps Chablis 2022

Chardonnay | France, Burgundy

A richer more immediately generous iteration than the 2021 yet with a delicacy and elegance. Perfumed fruit ripe gold apple a little lemon oil at play and a salty pop. Delicous long fine, supple. Excellent texture, line and length, impressive élévage and that all important mid-palate weight. Complexed by the long slow ferment and time on lees. Great drinking.

For all the many great things that can be told about Giacosa’s red wines, it is the Arneis that maybe typifies the great qualities of Bruno Giacosa the man. In the early 1970’s, this was an indigenous variety almost entirely lost to the region’s obsession with red wines (at the time mainly Dolcetto) that was ‘rediscovered’ by Alfredo Currado of Vietti and Giacosa very shortly after. The two are almost solely responsible for Arneis’ current importance in the region, especially in Roer

Looking good! Fresh, style with a nice phenolic grip and cleansing astringency with crunchy mineral acid. Spiced pear and quince with citrus rind and fresh marmalade are balanced by silvery almond lining. Building generosity in the glass. Serious Chenin here. A big jump from the Midi. Lambert appears to be working with a little more phenolic extract adding a playful grip and cleansing astringency. Very complete and flowing. David’s extra time in old oak and a 2nd winter in tank give it harmony and refinement, flowing with a real step up in sophistication. Super zippy, mineral acid with the core of fruit to support it. Building generosity and freshness in the glass on a fine crisp acidity. Heading more strongly down the quinc

Pieropan Soave ‘Calvarino’ MAGNUM 2021

White Blend | Veneto, Italy

The name 'Calvarino' translates to 'small ordeal'. Andrea Pieropan told us it was named after the hill Jesus was crucified on reflecting how difficult the soil is to work and the tortuous path which winds from top to bottom. The 2021 is the 50th Anniversary release & it is an excellent Calvarino. Vibrant and energetic with a perfume of white flowers and an excellent core of fruit. Thirst quenching. Well developed, no puppy fat here. Long and fine with a savoury twist. Chalky with a fine l

150-200 Year Old Vines!
The Finca Genoveva is showing more complexity on the nose at this early stage in its life compared with the ‘A Telleira’, I suspect it won’t be long before they sit on par. Providing the definition of high-quality super fine acid. Like the ‘A Telleira’ the mouthfeel gently laces your tongue with a sheer delicacy. The scent Gutiérez describes is here, I’d add a little lanolin to the mix. It carries through to the palate, wrapping the core of intriguing flavours with those citru

Simply delicious. Ridiculous for the coin. Citrus oils & ripe lemon juice from the kind of lemon you’d eat like an orange. Gutiérrez comment on development is interesting. I’d add that this is development pre-bottling as a winemaking choice. An approach that for mine offers more complete wine that has seen valuable exposure to oxygen that only help fruit of this quality harmonise and build complexity. Yes, there is a hint of straw & lanolin. It wraps a vibrant, energetic cor

“The 2018 Chablis Les Vaillons 1er Cru is presently showing only a very approximate impression of what this wine will ultimately be. Even so, there is good depth, as well as the strong balance of fruit intensity and vibrancy that runs through all of these wines. The Vaillons is a blend of six parcels in the greater Vaillons, composed of two in Vaillons proper and one each in Melinots, Roncieres, Secher and Chatains.” Antonio Galloni

The name translates to 'Return to Earth'. Trying this next to the other non-amphora wines, I wonder what impact fermenting in these clary vessels has. While it appears a little more developed. Kelley’s note is on the money. I feel like the chalky texture may be derived to some degree from the amphora. Without trying a control it’s impossible to say. Much pleasure to be had here with the very fresh marmalade notes, flowers and beyond. Transparent and delicate. Guillemot-Michel makes Chardo

Huet Vouvray Moelleux ‘Le Mont’ 2022

Chenin Blanc | Vouvray, D'Anjou-Saumur

The 2022 Le Mont Moelleux is a medium-sweet, tender style that is just so welcoming and appealing. It is the quiet type that doesn't show off. It offers breadth without weight, which I always like about the Huet wines - they're like clouds of Chenin floating over your palate. A fine floral and fruity fragrance reminiscent of lilac, pear and pineapple lingers off the tranquil finish. While the acidity in 2022 is a little gentle, it still has enough tension to sweep up the wine and hold it all tog

I love the fact that Trimbach hold back there wines for so long. The freshness, combined with the development of this wine brings a lovely harmony and balance. 8 years on the acid of this bone-dry wine has resolved and the richness of the fruit has powered through. Yet it remains elegant and fine. Complexity around a core of lime, layers of flowers, minerals, salt, hints of spice, just a lick of patisserie cream and so much more are occasionally popping their heads up. Also available in
