This is the baby in the bunch, representing one of the newest additions to the Vietti portfolio, with the first vintage produced in 2018. The learning curve in Monvigliero is always steep, or so most winemakers tell me, because very few can go to 100% whole-cluster fermentation. Indeed, the 2021 Barolo Monvigliero sees 60% whole clusters. The Vietti team is experienced, and this wine is pristine. This vintage was harvested on September 30th, and maceration was a bit shorter, at 20 days. The wine
Pretty, red fruit. Beautifully developed. Impeccable élévage. An underlying tar/leather/slate notes layering in intriguing complexity. The Vietti crew have built quite a lot of structure into this Ravera of Novello. A wonderful example of Ravera making for a very complex iteration. Lovely generosity. Fine plush Neb tannin. Divine roses. Impressive! Bud-break & harvest is around 2-3 weeks later than most of the other Communes for Vietti.Paul Kaan, WINE DECODED Sept 2025The 202
Blend from Côte des Blancs, Champagne
Categorically the finest Extra Brut ever conceived, this is a cuvee of laser line and immortal structure that rejoices in the lightning energy of 2008 and the exacting precision engineering that is Billecart. A glowing, medium straw hue is a dazzling prelude to its scintillating purity and drive, cut with magnificent acid line and high-tensile chalk structure. The distinguished, north-east facing slopes of Verzy and Verzenay take a delightfully fragrant and pure lead, presenting white cherry and
Bordeaux Blend from Bolgheri, Tuscany
Ornellaia is undoubtedly the refined lady of the estate. The reviews for the 2019 are full of superlatives. Hope to get a little of this in a glass soon. For a long time I was unconvinced wines made from French varieties made in Italy. One wine stands out as changing my mind, 1990 Ornellaia, thanks Lou!Beautifully balanced and poised it was poured at an open wine night where the only criterion was that it had to be bloody good!62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Merlot, 4% Petit Verdot, 3% C
Nebbiolo from Barbaresco, Piedmont
The 2015 Barbaresco Pajè Vecchie Viti captures everything that makes Nebbiolo so seductive. The 2016 Barbaresco Pajè Vecchie Viti is an exotic, totally beguiling wine laced with super-classic Nebbiolo notes of rose petal, orange peel, cinnamon and macerated cherry. Aromatic, sensual and constantly changing in the glass, the Pajè Vecchie Viti is everything Nebbiolo and Barbaresco are supposed to be. The complexity here is just unreal.Antonio Galloni, Vinous
Nebbiolo from Barbaresco, Piedmont
The 2016 Barbaresco Montefico Vecchie Viti is a big, statuesque wine. Of all the 2016 Barbarescos, the Montefico seems to be the wine that is still recovering most from its bottling, about two months before this tasting. The vertical structure of Montefico is evident, as are the intense tannins. Deeply savory and mineral, the Montefico is a wine for readers who can afford to wait for it.Antonio Galloni, Vinous
Nebbiolo from Barbaresco, Piedmont
The 2016 Barbaresco Asili Vecchie Viti is sensual, gracious and light on its feet. The purity of the fruit is simply dazzling, while tannins are all Asili, which means a bit softer than in the other wines. In the glass, the Asili is beautifully perfumed and ethereal, yet also quite deep, in the way only Nebbiolo can be. Crushed red berry fruit, kirsch, orange peel, cedar and cinnamon all linger.Antonio Galloni, Vinous
Ask any Riesling tragic the Top 5 Rieslings in the World & they'll have Clos Sainte Hune on their list! Each region around the world has epic producers, in Alsace you think of Albert Mann, Zind Humbrecht, Ostertag and always Trimbach. Trimbach has certainly had plenty of practice. In only nine years they’ll celebrate the families 400thyear making wine! The first celebrated release of Clos Ste Hune was in 1919."Vivid straw-green with gold highlights. Highly aromatic on the nose, revealing
Side by Side the play & fight flight siblings .. Keller's G-Max & Bürklin-Wolf's Kirchenstück!The Bürklin-Wolf 2021 Kirchenstück G.C. is clear, pure, fresh and saline on the complex and elegant nose. Full-bodied, rich and powerful on the platte, this is a dense, rich, savory and elegant Riesling with enormous grip and tension and a persistent saline finish. This is a great and promising Kirchjrnstzück. 12.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in November 202
Latricières Chambertin is an incredible site! I had Faiveley's 2015 Latricières Chambertin recently, delicious, perfumed elegant and refined. Along with the 2015, I devoured a brace of 2016's from across the appellations. They are really stepping up their game, the investments in the vineyard and winery are a testament to this. There is enough wood influence to merit pointing out on the airy, cool and layered nose of both red and dark currant, the sauvage and plenty of forest floor char
Pinot Noir from Gevrey-Chambertin, Côte-de-Nuits
Mazi is alway a favourite. Hugely long yet impeccably well-balanced! Toasty reduction knocks down the nose but there is fine freshness and richness to the suave and seductively textured bigger-bodied flavors that are generously proportioned while displaying both good tension and complexity on the impressively persistent and more powerful, if less refined, finish where a hint of wood appears. This isn’t quite as mineral-driven but save for a subtle touch of warmth, it’s beautifully balanced a
