Red Wine
Two theories for the name exist. The first that it refers to the fog that the vineyards of the Langhe are often immersed in. Second that the natural bloom that covers the grapes gives them a foggy appearance. Given the latter applies to most red grapes I prefer the former! There are 4 main clones of which Nebbiolo Lampia dominates over Nebbiolo Michet, Rosé (now proven to be a different variety), and, Bolla.
Southern central and north Piemonte. The two big guns here are Barolo and Barbaresco. It is grown throughout the Langhe including the Roero, Asti, Carema, Biella, Novara and Vercelli. In Alto Piedmonte, it is known as Spanna, and, is often blended with Croatina and Vespolina. We have seen Giacomo Conterno buy Nervi in the Commune of Gattinara to produce wines in the region. It is also grown in the lower parts of the Valle d’Aosta where it is known as Picotendroi, and, Valtellina in Lombardy where it is called Chiavennasca among others.
The ultimate case of not judging a book by its cover, Nebbiolo, at first appears pale in colour, old wines can have the appearance of rusty tap water.
Then you smell it! The aroma of most red wines is dominated by fruit characters. In contrast, Nebbiolo’s aroma is typically a mix of complex secondary aromas, earthy, tarry, spice, rose, citrus peel, woody herbs like rosemary, liquorice, phenol, dark chocolate, tobacco, truffles, leather, and, dark cherry fruit, often more evident on the palate. You’ll see this difference immediately by comparing it two the other two main Piedmontese varieties Barbera and Dolcetto.
Good Nebbiolo has a core of fruit running the length of your tongue, along with layers of those same secondary characters. Nebbiolo’s grape tannins give it a distinct texture, that for those who have not tried it before can seem hard, and, unyielding. Look for the quality and depth of tannin.
Achieving well balance tannin, alcohol, and, acidity makes for great Nebbiolo.
More than most other Italian wines, Nebbiolo, demands food to be at its best. A little fat and salt, enhance the texture and bring out the flavours.

Nebbiolo from Barolo, Piedmont
From the Perfume of Barbaresco, the Barolo shifts to a savoury, earthy profile, the richness of La Morra fruit shining through! 80% La Morra. Immediate generosity has it open for action but so much more. A little chocolate and little coffee, savoury bits on dark fruit. There is a lot going on here with layers of flavours and tannins. The depth and length are impressive. Wonderful harmony and presence.Full, dense and obviously really bright. Rose, maraschino, fleshy red plum/red prune. More
Nebbiolo from Castiglione Falletto, Barolo
2019 is the first vintage of Langhe Nebbiolo to be produced. It is made from a small part of vines registered as Nebbiolo Langhe in the Vignane MGA (in Barolo, next to Castellero) as well as some declassified fruit from the Barolo parcels. In 2019, the Nebbiolo was fermented on skins for about 10 days before being racked to preserve fruit and freshness. It went through malo in steel and was transferred to a single 1000L Mittelberger botti for aging. This is super fresh and aromatic with Baro

Barolo Cru Druca Fruit from the Vineyards of Luigi Oddero! Historically from the La Morra Specola Cru from 2020 the fruit is sourced from the Druca Cru in Barolo. Declassified Barolo! Not for quality, but, for the shorter ageing timeframe. BOOM! The rest of the fruit from this Cru goes into the Langhe Nebbiolo. Specola is now bottled as a Cru Barolo with some of the fruit going into the Classico. The shift in Cru was based on a desire to find fruit with softer tannin to handle 100% wholebunc
Nebbiolo from Gattinara, Alto Piemonte
A little intro to Antoniolo's Nebbiolo wines. Juvenia is from the final two cru sites, Valferana and Borelle. It's unoaked. I couldn't find any details of how it's matured. Suffice to say given the skill with the Riserva level wines it's not surprising that for its standing the Juvenia marries freshness with development beautifully. At just 13% alcohol it has a density that you wouldn't see in Barolo or Barbaresco at the same alcohol. Bright, fine acid balance the fruit and dusty front-mid palat

Barolo Cru Druca Fruit from the Vineyards of Luigi Oddero! Sourced from the Druca Cru in Barolo. Declassified Barolo! Not for quality, but, for the shorter ageing timeframe. BOOM! The shift in Cru back in 2020 was based on a desire to find fruit with softer tannin to handle 100% whole-bunch, an uncommon technique in Piedmont, though one on the rise. The Cru is near Novello's Ravera Cru. The site allows more hang time & the ripeness of tannins needed for 100% wholebunch ferment. Interest

Nebbiolo from Neive, Barbaresco
The 'Side Project' of ex-Bruno Giacosa's winemaker Francesco Versio! Baby Barbaresco anyone? Simply delicious. Shows exceptional touch. Fresh, energetic with a delicacy matched to an intoxicating perfume underpinned by vibrant red fruits, complexing earthing, licorice, sour cherry and a little woody herb. Perfectly balanced this is stunning and ridiculous for the coin. The Francesco Versio 2021 Langhe Nebbiolo shows terrific balance (and great value) with plenty of wild berry fruit and fr
Red Blend from Lessona, Alto Piemonte
Beauty and sophistication, exceptional purity, a very complete wine! Incredible complexity, perfume pops, savoury layers, orange zest, dark fruits, earth, and woody herbs are just the beginning. Line and length to the shape of the palate. Thirst quenching, yet with a density of flavour that rewards. Juicy acid with fine dusty tannins complete the picture. For anyone wanting to see what Alto Piedmont is capable of this is a great place to start!95% Spanna AKA Nebbiolo 5% Vespolina
Nebbiolo from Monforte d'Alba, Barolo
Trying Langhe Neb's made with fruit from just one Commune is a great way to dial into the characteristics of that Commune The 2021 makes it 4 years in a row that this wine has performed well above its standing. The consistency Fratelli Alessandria are achieving here is impressive. All of the great Verduno makers speak of the perfume and spice that are the hallmark of the Commune. Both are here in spades. Plush, ultra-fine tannins are beautifully weighted against hyper-vital red and blue fruits a
Nebbiolo from Castiglione Falletto, Barolo
Serious Langhe playing at Barolo level. Poured blind I'd more than likely say it was at Barolo level. Excellent acid wonderful core of fruit, flowing with excellent shape. A vibrancy and energy with fruit weight toward La Morra sources. Outstanding aroma and flavour profile. Layered and complex earthy and truffled. Open and approachable. A serious wine & a wonderful expression of Nebbiolo. The textural elements in the Oddero wines just keep getting better and better year after year.
