Shiraz/Syrah from Saint-Joseph, Northern Rhône
Love the perfume here very complete long layered fine, dark and red fruit with brooding and stalk. Harmonious with subtle pepper pop. Excellent élévage, fine acid. Build in structure and mid-palate grip, giving energy. Playful fun.Excellent comparision with Hauts Châssis’ Saint-Joseph made with no whole bunches.Saturated violet color. Vibrant, spice-tinged dark berry, cherry, potpourri and licorice aromas are sharpened by a smoky mineral flourish. Fresh blackberry and bitter
Sangiovese from Montalcino, Tuscany
Speller is on the money, this is still closed (April 2023). Builds with time in the glass, the fruit leans toward the fine Burgundian style. The tannins are just a little edgy, as with the Brunello, as the new Botti season future vintages should see further refinement to the texture. This clearly sits in between the Rosso & Brunello level. I like the cranberry descriptor and would add a musk and rose top note. A few years in bottle should see the tannins resolve fully and mid-palate weight
Pinot Noir from Lombardy, Italy
Bruna Giacosa persists with her father’s interest in producing a very small batch sparkling wine in most good vintages, a Blanc de Noirs made in methode Champenois and aged on lees for between 2-3 years. Though a curio even in the storied history of Giacosa, it is a wine steeped in historical significance for the winery. An avid lover of the great house Champagnes, Giacosa sought to create his own ‘metodo classico’ that was distinctly Italian stylistically. In the early 1980s, the modern
What a wonderful exploration of Trebbiano the wines of Ciavolich, Tiberio and Emidio Pepe. On the continuum Tiberio is the freshest with least oxidative handling, Ciavolich is in the middle and Emidio Pepe has the full beans! All are delightful expression and all that is left for us to do is enjoy and celebrate the difference. The 2024 is just the second vintage of Ciavolich's Trebbiano 'Fosso Cancelli' I've seen. Bought it on spec after devouring a bottle of the 2021. The 2024 is serious
Gamay Noir from Moulin à Vent, Beaujolais
“The most powerful wine in the range is the 2019 Moulin-à-Vent Le Plantier de Favre, a rich and ripe cuvée that wafts from the glass with notes of cherries, rose petals and blackberries, framed by a subtle patina from its élevage in used oak. Medium to full-bodied, layered and concentrated, with an ample mid-palate and succulent acids, it's fleshy and enveloping, concluding with an expansive finish.” William Kelly, The Wine Advocate
Gamay Noir from Moulin à Vent, Beaujolais
“One of the more perfumed, elegant wines in this year's collection is the 2019 Moulin-à-Vent Les Brussellions, a medium to full-bodied, ample and layered red evocative of plums, red berries, rose petals and spices. Deep and concentrated, it's structured around ultra-refined tannins.” William Kelly, The Wine Advocate
Gamay Noir from Moulin à Vent, Beaujolais
“Aromas of raspberries, plums, peonies and warm spices introduce the 2019 Fleurie Grille-Midi, a medium to full-bodied, layered and lively wine that's delicate and refined, with ripe tannins and a succulent core of fruit. As was the case in 2018, this is one of the most elegant wines in the range.” William Kelly, The Wine Advocate
Grenache from McLaren Vale, South Australia
Wow there is some zip. The blend is more than the sum of its parts. The different perfumes: violets and fading flowers, fruits: red, rhubarb, blood orange, a little musk, spice and beyond marry offering a complex profile. The build in tannin across the palate is fine yet not insignificant. There is more immediate harmony and expression than with the single vineyard wines. Darkness with freshness. The refreshing, thirst quenching nature of the wine is once again a demonstration of the shift from
Chardonnay from Chablis, Burgundy
“A nose of freshness – almost cold and saline – it has my attention. Mouth-filling. Super energy to this wine – plenty of citrus bitters again that slightly modify the texture – interestingly you note the barrel more in the flavours this time than the aromas – the reverse of the last wine – but the elevage was the same. Again, a great wine but wait 2 -3 years”Bill Nanson“More lemon than lime, a little touch of coconut, the wine has the intensity to handle it, amazin
Chardonnay from Chablis, Burgundy
“Another wine which started out in wood for 50% of the volume, which may explain the light coconut touch. Great floral points alongside, such energy of fruit, primary yellow notes, clean concentrated citrus zest, long saline finish. Another beautiful wine from this site.”Jasper Morris 90-92 Points 5-Star Wine
Shiraz/Syrah from Saint-Joseph, Northern Rhône
This is very good. Fruit development is excellent. Savoury, umami, red fruited with a lick of spice, the stalk tannin is of quality with a playful grip. Love to have this 5-7 years. Great drinking out of the gate. Tannins would love a little food. Long pure finish. Great shape and flow. Not at all heavy, elegant.Excellent comparision with Hauts Châssis’ Saint-Joseph made with no whole bunches.Saturated violet color. Vibrant, spice-tinged dark berry, cherry, potpourri and licori
