Pol Roger ‘Sir Winston Churchill’ 2009

Blend from Champagne, France

$370

"In success you deserve it .. In defeat you need it" Sir Winston Churchill

Description

Pol Roger’s prestige Cuvée. Always complex, rich, showing beautiful development from the extra time in bottle, spending almost 10 years on lees. This is a Champagne to pour in a big glass, let it warm a little and enjoy! The richness from the Pinot has a counterpoint in the poised acidity and linear Chardonnay. Truly a great celebration wine, though don’t celebrate with too many people!

“Remember, gentlemen, it’s not just France we are fighting for, it’s Champagne!” Sir Winston Churchill

Why is this Wine so Yummy?

Champagne Pol Roger created their Prestige Cuvée in homage to Sir Winston Churchill mindful of the qualities that he sought in his champagne: robustness, a full-bodied character and relative maturity. The exact blend is a closely guarded family secret but it is undeniable that the composition would meet with the approval of the man to whom it is dedicated: “My tastes are simple, I am easily satisfied with the best”. Pinot Noir predominates, providing structure, breadth and robustness whilst Chardonnay contributes elegance, finesse and subtlety. Composed exclusively of grapes sourced from Grands Crus Pinot Noir and Chardonnay vineyards which were already under vine during Churchill’s lifetime. Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill is only made in the very best vintages and is always released later than the other vintage dated Champagnes from Pol Roger, marking Churchill’s appreciation for older wines.

The must undergoes two débourbages (settlings), one at the press house immediately after pressing and the second, a débourbage à froid, in stainless steel tanks at 6°C over a 24 hour period. A slow cool fermentation with the temperature kept under 18°C takes place in stainless steel with each variety and each village kept separate. The wine undergoes a full malolactic-fermentation prior to final blending. Secondary fermentation takes place in bottle at 9°C in the deepest Pol Roger cellars (33 metres below street level) where the wine is kept until it undergoes remuage (riddling) by hand, a rarity in Champagne nowadays. The very fine and persistent mousse for which Pol Roger is renowned owes much to these deep, cool and damp cellars.

Tasting Note from the Winery

The wine has an inviting, bright golden hue, and a fine, regular stream of bubbles.
At first the refined nose exudes subtle hints of brioche and sweet spice combining with citrus flavours and floral fragrances.
As the wine warms in the glass, it becomes more powerful and the nose develops complex nuances of toasted nuts, acacia blossom and honeycomb.
The palate is round and creamy supported by notes of fresh fruit.
The structure is opulent, underpinned by fabulous balance. The finish is long and powerful.

Riddling

The images below, courtesy of Pol Roger, from left to right. 1. A bottle ready to be riddled, you can see the yeast on the side of the bottle. The bottle is ‘Sur Lie’ on yeast lees. 2. A riddler at work, he’ll turn 30,000 bottles a day 1/4 turn for 30 days, slowly lifting the bottles to a vertical position upside down. 3. The end result: all of the yeast lees are in the very neck of the bottle ready to be removed in the process of disgorging. The bottle is now ‘Sur Point’ on point.

97 Points

As always, this Pinot Noir-dominated Champagne is a great wine. In this vintage, it is fuller than usual, perhaps less structure —a true reflection of the vintage. Like all releases of this cuvée, the wine will age magnificently. Drink now or hold for at least 10 years to get full maturity.

Wine Enthusiast

95+ Points

Pol Roger's 2009 Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill has turned out very well, offering up a demonstrative bouquet of golden apples, clear honey, hazelnuts and fresh pastry that's still quite primary. Full-bodied, fleshy and textural, it's deep and concentrated, with an ample core of fruit, ripe but racy acids, a pinpoint mousse and a long, penetrating finish. This is an expressive, deceptively immediate rendition of this bottling, yet despite its charm out of the gates, readers willing to wait at least five years will be rewarded with significant additional complexity.

95 Points

A seamless Champagne, lithe with fresh, finely knit acidity, and showing beautiful integration, with a rich vein of smoky minerality underscoring flavors of black cherry, toast, preserved lemon and pickled ginger. There's power and focus here, but this bubbly highlights the grace and accessibility that 2009 can offer even on release.

Wine Spectator

94 Points

The 2009 Brut Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill is a heady, explosive Champagne. Ample and deep, the Churchill is so expressive today. Apricot, tangerine oil, mint, baked apple tart and spice all flesh out. I would give the 2009 at least a year or two in bottle, as it is a bit tight at this stage. Even so, time in the glass brings out a feeling of raw power that is impossible to miss.
