Barolo
Serralunga starts at the southeastern corner of Barolo and stretches about two-thirds of the way up the runs along the eastern border of the region of Barolo. When the MGA’s (Cru’s) were confirmed in 2010, the 39 Cru’s in Serralunga were defined with great detail. Compare them to only 11 MGA’s in Monforte d’Alba which covers a much larger area.
The soils in the Commune are classified as Helvetian, now commonly called Serraluvian and tend to be lean sandy limestone and clay soils that yield more structure.
Generalisations are fraught with danger when it comes to wine, I’ll give it a go anyway.
Barolo from Serralunga tends to have more structure and bolder tannins that take a little time to resolve. The flavours tend to be a little darker and more on the secondary tea, tar & roses side. As they age and evolve, they develop truffles, soften, and apparent sweetness evolves.
Winemaking techniques and vineyard specific factors such as Cappellano’s plantings on their own rootstocks, his Piè Franco, can offer us incredibly fine elegant wines.
Over recent years it has become common for wineries sourcing wines from multiple vineyards in the same commune to name their Barolos after the Commune of origin. In this case ‘Commune di Serralunga d’Alba’. These can be great examples to give you a general feel for the Commune.

All of Giacosa’s Barolo wines are single vineyard offerings, and the same is true for the Classico where all of the fruit in the years it is produced comes from Falletto in Serralunga d’Alba. The most recent vintage of Barolo ‘Classico’ is 2020. In the years where a Barolo ‘Classico’ a Barolo ‘Falletto’ and a Barolo ‘Falletto Vigna Le Rocche’ are all produced concurrently (such as 2016), the fruit for the Barolo ‘Classico’ will usually come from the lower and less expose

The Bruno Giacosa 2022 Barbaresco Asili is hitting the market now. It was bottled on the 15th of July, 2024. This elegant wine shows the finely tuned and nuanced essence of Asili with its fine soils. It opens to a bright ruby color and delivers chalky tannins that retain their tension and grippy feel. On the close, you get hints of violets and blue flower. This is a very terroir-driven wine, but it needs more time in bottle to fully express itself. There will be a red label, or Riserva, made in

A wonderful expression of Serralunga, all of the tea, slate, graphite, exceptional quality tannins, with a presence and sophistication. The firm mouthfeel of seriously good Serralunga tannins. Again such a complete wine. The nose draws you in. Begging you to drink. A darkness and energy that is palpable.Impressive gear. Precise, and pure, wearing the vineyard and commune on its sleeve. Superb fruit of depth and length. Great drinking here with much much more to come.

In the great years when a Barolo ‘Falletto Vigna Le Rocche’ are produced, the fruit for Barolo ‘Falletto’ comes from all but the very top parts of the Falletto vineyard. In most vintages, this wine is the most ready of the Barolos and shows Giacosa’s sweetly fruited Nebbiolo in the shortest window after opening.Being from the Southern part of Serralunga d’Alba and almost bordering Monforte, the wines from this site are rich in ferrous intensity, with sweet blackberries, blueberri

The 2020 Barolo Rupestris is elegant, sculpted wine. It shows the mid-weight structure of the year nicely. Sweet red cherry fruit, mint, chalk, white pepper, orange peel and dried flowers open with some coaxing. I would leave this alone in the cellar for a few years, as time in bottle is essential here. I won't be surprise if this fills out a bit over the coming years, as is often the case here. Drink 2026-2045Antonio Galloni - NR as per request from Cappellano

Barolo lovers will need no reminding: 2016 was an epic vintage, producing a stream of breathtaking wines. First bottled as a single cru in 1982, 2016 marks the 35th vintage of Massolino’s benchmark Barolo, Vigna Rionda, and even those who know this wine intimately will surely not have tasted a greater expression. The sheer quality achieved this this year has led Massolino to introduce a new, all-black label, which henceforth will only be used for very greatest years of Vigna Rionda. The 2020 Barolo Francia is a soaring, classically austere wine built for the cellar. Medium in body and driving, with tons of mineral intensity, the 2020 is an evocative wine that makes me think about the future. This is what young Barolo should be - vibrant and stern, but with the purity of fruit that is typical here. The 2020 is so wonderfully alive.Antonio Galli, Vinous 98 Points

A parcel of Arione has been earmarked for Monfortino in 2015, giving a strong indication of the quality of the site! Roberto acquired a portion of the Arione Cru in 2015. Just under 6 Ha for 6 million euro. It is adjacent to the Francia vineyard, long responsible for both the Barolo ‘Cascina Francia’ and ‘Monfortino’ Riserva in the very southern end of Serralunga. The contours of Arione follow on directly from Francia and the soil profiles are similar with a limestone base compared to Ce

The 2021 Barolo Francia is a vertical, explosive Barolo endowed with tons of energy. Bright acids and fine beams of tannin provide the framework for this striking young Barolo. All the elements are so well balanced. Time in the glass brings out an interplay of mineral-drenched energy, persistence and textural breadth. There's a lot of structure, and yet the tannins feel fine-grained and finessed.I especially admire its translucent energy. Magnificent. Antonio Galli, Vinous 99 Points

Rich long and bold dense tannins that need time to quality tannins with excellent acidity. Great depth and layering of flavour and tannins. Incredibly complex wine. So much going on delicious. All of the classic hallmarks of a superb Vigna Rionda. Stunning.Comes in individual wooden box.
