Meursault

Meursault is one of the three great White Burgundy villages along with Chassagne & Puligny. Many would argue that there are a few other villages vying to join the three.

Sandwiched between Puligny-Montrachet and Volnay, Meursault’s wines naturally vary from plot to plot, they have the potential to show the polar opposites of richness through to great elegance and delicacy. Soil composition and exposure providing great diversity.

For mine the most exciting Meursault wines show a delicacy, transparency, weightlessness with tension while still have a depth and length of flavour to match their standing in the hierarchy from Bourgogne to 1er Cru. Meursault having no Grand Cru vineyards.

98% of Meursault’s production is white wine.  Whilst it has no Grand Cru’s. It has a cluster of Premier Cru’s next to Puligny-Montrachet and a second cluster next to Volnay.

The Appellation used to describe the wines depends on the variety, Pinot or Chardonnay, and the adjacent Appellation. For example, the cluster next to Volnay uses the Appellation Volnay-Santenot for the red Premier Cru’s. This makes sense when you consider the reputation for reds from Volnay. Whites from the same area use Meursault Premier Cru.

The key on the map details all of the different naming conventions.

Look out for the White Meursalt Premier Cru’s Charmes, Perriers, and, Genevrières. The best-known producers are Roulot, Comte Lafon & Coche Dury. There are many others making stunning wines.

In total there are 18 Premier Crus.

Diam. Following the 2017 harvest, Leroux managed something of a coup when he won a hard-fought tender and was able to add to his Estate holdings in Meursault. While the purchase included a small selection of village plots (including Clos du Village) the real prizes were the well-sited parcels in Volany Santenots (Les Plures), Meursault-Blagny and a slice of Charmes, lying directly beneath Perrières. It’s a sliver of vines in the upper (dessus) portion of the vineyard, a section that has been

Here too the nose is quite fresh with its combination of apple, white flowers and just sliced citrus, especially lemon. There is both excellent punch and a lovely texture though only average density to the lingering and balanced finish where a touch of youthful austerity slowly emerges. While this could be enjoyed young, it has apparent development potential so at least a few years of keeping are recommended. ♥ OutstandingAllen Meadows, Burghound 91-93 Points Note: fro
This is also airy and cool with a beautifully layered nose featuring notes of green apple, white flowers and a discreet hint of exotic tea. The almost painfully intense, sleek and tension-filled flavors display beautiful cut and minerality while delivering superb length on the chiseled, linear and youthfully austere finale. This is seriously impressive with fine depth and length, indeed this is altogether classy. If you can find it, buy it. ♥ Sweet spot OutstandingAllen Meadows, Burghoun
