Côte-de-Nuits

Gevrey-Chambertin

Gevrey-Chambertin lies 15km south of Dijon in the Côte de Nuits. The region takes its name from the village, Gevrey, and the appellation’s most prestigious vineyard, Le Chambertin. This village-vineyard naming convention is commonplace today, however, Gevrey-Chambertin set the trend, officially linking the two in 1847.

Covering approximately 550 hectares, it is one of the largest appellations in the Côte d’Or and certainly the largest appellations for reds; Pinot Noir is the only variety planted in Gevrey-Chambertin. Due to its size, the sub-region has a variety of terroirs – from gravels in the Vau de Combe to rich clay-soils on the northern côte – and produces a diversity of styles. Traditional viticultral and winemaking predominate, however, there has been growing trend towards more organic practices over the past two decades.

Gevrey-Chambertin has earned a reputation for producing Pinot Noirs with rich fruit and structured tannins. The best expressions see this intensity tempered with elegance, yielding concentrated wines with complexity and finesse.

Domaine Trapet Père et Fils Gevrey-Chambertin Ostréa 2022

Pinot Noir | Gevrey-Chambertin, Burgundy

A beautifully layered if somewhat reserved nose grudgingly offers up its array of wild dark berries, anise and violet scents. The delicious, concentrated and caressing medium weight flavors possess a lovely sense of refinement on the slightly less powerful mineral-driven finish. This is qualitatively similar to the straight Gevrey villages but the two wines are quite different. “A riper and distinctly Gevrey nose of forest floor, the sauvage and poached plum displays plenty of earth character. There is notably more power, weight and muscular if notably less finesse to the bigger-bodied flavors that terminate in a robust but not hard finish that exhibits very fine length. This is quite promising though it's also definitely a wine that will require extended keeping." ♥ OutstandingAllen Meadows, Burghound 90-93 Points

This is Mortet’s ‘super Gevrey’ and comes from a clutch of five brilliantly placed plots that Denis Mortet deliberately chose for the quality of their terroirs and vines. The vineyards include En Motrot, situated between the church and Château de Gevrey-Chambertin close to Clos Saint-Jacques; Au Vellé, very close-by under Petits Cazetiers; Combe-du-Dessus, situated at the top of the Brochon slope just north-east of Gevrey itself; En Champs directly below Gevrey’s 1er Cru Champeaux (the

"The 2022 Gevrey-Chambertin "Mes Cinq Terroirs" comes from the north of the appellation and includes one-third of whole bunches due to the acidity being lower than the Marsannay. It has a beautiful bouquet like last year, pure with raspberry and wild strawberry fruit, superb mineralité and vigor. The palate is medium-bodied with dark berry fruit, Earl Grey and light tertiary scents, very cohesive with a persistent finish. This should age extremely well in bottle." Neal Martin, Vinous 92-94

An equally restrained nose combines both upper and lower register elements that include red cherry and pomegranate with those of plum, earth and forest floor. There is notably better concentration, power and punch to the broad-shouldered flavors that possess evident muscularity and minerality on the compact and serious finale that delivers sneaky good length. A Gevrey 1er of relative refinement. ♥ OutstandingAllen Meadows

“Rich and concentrated, the 2021 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Cherbaudes reveals arose of plums, wild berries, vine smoke and orange zest. Medium to full-bodied, supple and seamless, it's deep and multidimensional, with succulent acids and sweet, melting tannins. This is always Boillot's honorary grand cru, and this vintage is no exception” William Kelley, The Wine Advocate 94 Points JM 91-94

This is also slightly reduced and it's enough to render the nose difficult to assess. The medium-bodied flavors are both more powerful and concentrated though at the expense of less refinement and minerality on the driving and impressively persistent finish. This will need to add depth to merit the upper end of my predicted range but the underlying material appears to be present so that this can eventually happen. Patience required. ♥ OutstandingAllen Meadows

"A broad-ranging nose displays hints of the sauvage, forest floor and herbal tea to the mostly cool dark pinot fruit scents. The denser and much more muscular middle weight plus flavors flash an abundance of minerality on the powerful, focused and well-delineated finish. This youthfully austere effort is also very clearly built-to-age and a wine that's going to need it. Drink: 2034+ Outstanding ♥"Allen Meadows, Burghound

The Derée Champérier vineyard was purchased by the Trapet family in 1859. After 160 uninterrupted years of farming this terroir, current generation Pierre & Louis wanted to make a cuvée as an hommage to the many generations of Trapet vignerons that have come before them. Thanks to its purity and terroir-transparency, they felt the 2019 vintage was the perfect moment to produce the Cuvee 1859.

“This is at once brooding yet exceptionally fresh with its layered array of both red and dark berries, violet and a whiff of just turned earth.
