Côte-de-Nuits

Gevrey-Chambertin

Gevrey-Chambertin lies 15km south of Dijon in the Côte de Nuits. The region takes its name from the village, Gevrey, and the appellation’s most prestigious vineyard, Le Chambertin. This village-vineyard naming convention is commonplace today, however, Gevrey-Chambertin set the trend, officially linking the two in 1847.

Covering approximately 550 hectares, it is one of the largest appellations in the Côte d’Or and certainly the largest appellations for reds; Pinot Noir is the only variety planted in Gevrey-Chambertin. Due to its size, the sub-region has a variety of terroirs – from gravels in the Vau de Combe to rich clay-soils on the northern côte – and produces a diversity of styles. Traditional viticultral and winemaking predominate, however, there has been growing trend towards more organic practices over the past two decades.

Gevrey-Chambertin has earned a reputation for producing Pinot Noirs with rich fruit and structured tannins. The best expressions see this intensity tempered with elegance, yielding concentrated wines with complexity and finesse.

Benjamin Leroux Gevrey-Chambertin 2021

Pinot Noir | Gevrey-Chambertin, Côte-de-Nuits

The 2021 Gevrey hails from 50-year-old vines in Les Seuvrées (bordering Morey) and the northern, limestone-rich La Justice and Les Crais. Some old vines in Les Jeunes Rois and fruit from Champerrier and En Champs (each on the Brochon side of the appellation), complete the picture. And ‘complete’ is the operative word. There’s no doubt the old vines of Jeunes Rois bring a greater dimension to this cuvée, and we’re glad Leroux decided to keep it in the blend. (It’s so good

Laurent Ponsot Gevrey-Chambertin Cuvée de l’Aulne 2016

Pinot Noir | Gevrey-Chambertin, Burgundy

Check out Burghound's review! The last time we shipped a Ponsot Gevrey, it was the Domaine Ponsot Cuvée des Abeille. Ponsot’s modus of late picking always seemed to heighten this Gevrey villages primordial persona, and it’s good to note the leopard has not changed its spots. Ponsot’s sources in 2016 include purchased grapes (vinified by Laurent), and he has also bought a couple of barrels to augment the cuvée in this vintage. Regardless, Laurent has again fashioned an outstandingly

This is openly floral with its pretty and relatively high-toned nose of fresh red currant, pomegranate and herbal tea aromas that are trimmed in a hint of the sauvage. The lively and sleekly textured middle weight flavors exude a subtle bead of minerality on the well-delineated yet supple finish that is supported by dusty tannins on the slightly warm finale. This is a very good Gevrey villages that isn't quite so structured but one that will still need at least a modicum of patience. Drink: 2027

Layers of Silky Tannins!
The Lavaux is situated below Poissenot and next to Clos Saint Jacques. Lovely crimson Nose is in the darker fruit spectrum, some cassis and blackberry and that cherry liquor, a lick of new oak as always when the wine is young. Quite intense and deep. The palate is the most structured and intense, quite firm tannins and a real youthful energy to the palate. It is long and impressively concentrated with layers of fruit and tannin interwoven. "Here too the wood treatment is no longer subtle though it stops short of dominating the pungently earthy humus-inflected mix of red and dark wild berries. There is outstanding volume to the delicious and plump but powerful large-scaled flavors that terminate in a mouthcoating, balanced and built-to-age finale. This possesses excellent development potential though it's not so structured that it couldn't be approached after 7 to 10 years even though it should easily reward 15+." Allen Meadows,

Jadot have turned out a divine Estournelles from 2018. Burghound's note of it being an understated style rings true. Many 2018 from Gevrey-Chambertin are bold in nature. Here we see a delicacy that has it showing fine and elegant. Tasted blind you'd possibly look to another village. Deceptive it is, with considerable depth and length. Poise, flow and shape, with a perfume floating over delicious fruit. Jadot again showing a deft hand in crafting a sophisticated Pinot full of personality. April 2

This is Mortet’s ‘super Gevrey’ and comes from a clutch of five brilliantly placed plots that Denis Mortet deliberately chose for the quality of their terroirs and vines. The vineyards include En Motrot, situated between the church and Château de Gevrey-Chambertin close to Clos Saint-Jacques; Au Vellé, very close-by under Petits Cazetiers; Combe-du-Dessus, situated at the top of the Brochon slope just north-east of Gevrey itself; En Champs directly below Gevrey’s 1er Cru Champeaux (the

Faiveley is definitely a Domaine on the Ascention During the construction of the Château de Gevrey-Chambertin, the monks of Cluny would gather in the valley after a hard day of labouring the vineyards. The soils in this parcel are the same as in “Les Cazetiers” although the parcel is located slightly higher up. This truly is a remarkable terroir. Exposition North-East Soil Fossiliferous […]

Domaine Trapet Père et Fils Gevrey-Chambertin Ostréa 2021

Pinot Noir | Gevrey-Chambertin, Burgundy

A slightly riper nose is comprised by notes of both red and dark currant, plum and similar floral and earth nuances. There is slightly better volume and mid-palate density to the medium-bodied flavors that exude more evident minerality on the equally rustic and youthfully austere but firmer finale. This is quite good and worth considering. Drink 2031+ Allen Meadows, Burghound 89-91 Points ♥ Outstanding The 2021 Gevrey-Chambertin Ostrea has turned out nicely, unwinding in the glass wi

"A broad-ranging nose displays hints of the sauvage, forest floor and herbal tea to the mostly cool dark pinot fruit scents. The denser and much more muscular middle weight plus flavors flash an abundance of minerality on the powerful, focused and well-delineated finish. This youthfully austere effort is also very clearly built-to-age and a wine that's going to need it. Drink: 2034+ Outstanding ♥" Allen Meadows, Burghound

Faiveley is definitely a Domaine on the Ascention I had Faiveley's 2015 Latricières Chambertin recently, delicious, perfumed elegant and refined. Along with the 2015, I devoured a brace of 2016's from across the appellations. They are really stepping up their game, the investments in the vineyard and winery are a testament to this. A cool, pure and ultra-fresh nose features plenty of sauvage and underbrush characters on the pretty mélange of wild red and dark berry aromas. The tension-filled
