This is one of the benchmark traditional Barolo's from a classic years! Every time I’ve tried Cavallotto’s ‘Vigna San Guiseppe’ I’ve gone to a very happed place. While Vietti's Villero is their Top Wine. This is my favorite! I had a 1997 not long ago that was breathtaking!The 2017 Barolo Rocche di Castiglione shows all the signatures of this site, all turned up to the maximum. I am not sure I have ever tasted a Vietti Castiglione with this much heft. Super-ripe dark red fruit, rose petal, mocha, dried herbs and menthol all build in an ample, resonant Barolo. Readers should be prepared to cellar the 2017 for the next handful of years, perhaps longer.

While Vietti's Villero is their Top Wine. This is my favorite! I had a 1997 not long ago that was breathtaking!The 2018 Barolo Rocche di Castiglione is suave, silky and caressing right out of the gate. Sumptuous and racy, with silky tannins, the Rocche possesses superb depth and plenty of resonance that builds over time. The 2018 is an especially potent Rocche that is going to need a number of years to unwind. Drink 2028 - 2048 Galloni

It marries finesse and volume to a degree that is not found in most of the other wines in this range. Castiglione Falletto is the center of the Barolo production zone, literally and figuratively, the place where many different soil types meet. This wine is full of surprises. From a hot vintage, the Giuseppe Mascarello 2017 Barolo Monprivato is unexpectedly floral, initially, more than it is fruity. Indeed. it shows hardly any sign of the challenges associated with a very dry summer season. Nebbiolo maintains its balance and freshness with an interlude of wild rose and lilac that moves progressively toward cassis, wild cherry and raspberry. The Giuseppe Mascarello 2018 Barolo Monprivato reveals an open and accessible personality. This wine is an immediate charmer. I tasted these wines with the Mascarello family seated across the table from me, and during our chat, they explained that this was a gratifying vintage in terms of farming and winemaking. Tasted next to the 2020 vintage, the Giuseppe Mascarello 2019 Barolo Monprivato delivers a much darker and richer presentation of fruit. You get freshness and brightness with Bing cherry, cassis and dried pomegranate. The 2019 vintage is clearly more complex and offers more overall depth. As Elena Mascarello tells me, "2020 is all light, and 2019 leans into darkness."
