Why is this Wine so Yummy?

If you’re a fan of Alsatian whites, then there’s a good chance you’ve encountered Hugel before. For many, their classic wines are the entryway to the region and represent a standard for affordable, characterful and well-made riesling. According to the Hugels, it is their most demanding variety as it is also the latest ripening. Dry and elegant, it expresses itself best on our steepest slopes with the most complex minerality.

The Riesling Classic is Hugel family’s signature wine. This dry Riesling stands out for its finesse and frankness and is the ideal partner to fish and seafood thanks to its wonderful balance and elegance. In youth, the wine bursts with juicy intensity and livewire acid, however this mellows with age and gives way to more textural refinement and layered tertiary characters. Aged or youthful, whatever your preference, there is no bad time to enjoy a Hugel Classic.

About Hugel

3 generations of Hugel & Fils: [L-R] : Etienne, Marc-André, André, Jean-Frédéric, Jean-Philippe and Marc Hugel
Famille Hugel was established in 1639 by Hans Ulrich Hugel and is one of the regions most loved producers and largest landholders with in excess of 120 hectares of vineyards to their name. Situated in Riquewihr the estate has over the years built an enviable reputation for the consistency and quality of its wines.

Now in its 13th generation, the business is currently run by Jean-Philippe Hugel, who is the CEO, Marc Hugel, who looks after the vineyards and winemaking, and the irrepressible Etienne Hugel who looks after the commercial side of things.

Riesling with Marc Hugel

In the Vineyard

They have 25 hectares in Riquewihr, with half of these holdings in Grand Cru sites (although Hugel is one of the two main producers, along with Trimbach, who don’t officially recognize the Grand Cru classification in Alsace). They also purchase grapes from growers under long-term contract, which brings another 100 hectares under their control.

The grapes used to produce Hugels “Classic” wines come exclusively from estate owned vineyards or from growers under long term contract surrounding the village of Riquewihr.

In the Winery

For the Riesling Classic, fermentation takes place in temperature controlled vats followed by natural clarification in nuetral vessels over the winter. The wine is lightly fined and gently filtered prior to bottling in the spring.

Where in the World are Hugel?
