Description

The 2020 Chassagne-Montrachet Cuvée Margot bursts with aromas of pear, tangerine, honeycomb and freshly baked bread. Medium to full-bodied, ample and satiny, it’s bright and precise, with a lively spine of acidity and a long, saline finish. As readers may remember, this derives from four parcels situated on the village’s alluvial fan that ripen preciously and are among the first to be harvested.

William Kelley, The Wine Advocate 90 Points BH 89

A blend of 4 parcels planted in 1970, 1985 & 2005. Named after Caroline and Damiens paternal grandmother.

About Domaine Marc-Collin

“Marc Colin is one of the best growers in the Côte de Beaune, perhaps to Saint Aubin what Jean-Marc Roulot is to Meursault. And you can quote me on that.” Neal Martin

The Domaine was created in 1970 by Marc Colin and his wife Michèle. They began with some 6 hectares of vineyards that had been in the family for over a century and added some more along the journey. Today, Caroline and Damien, two of their children, lead this 12-hectare estate and includes 26 appellations in the villages of SAINT-AUBIN, CHASSAGNE-MONTRACHET, PULIGNY-MONTRACHET and SANTENAY.‎‎ Pierre-Yves (who made the wine at Marc Colin for 10 years) established his own project in 2005.

In the Vineyard

Vineyards are farmed lutte raisonnée with some experimentation en culture biologique. Their wines distinctly represent their place with purity, harmony and complexity.

In the Winery

The one big thing to note is an élévage of 15-18 months. Seeing the wine through two winters in barrel works wonders harmonising Burgundian Chardonnay particularly when the acid profile & freshness of fruit is there to support the time.

The 2020 Vintage at Domaine Marc-Collin

Damien Colin began picking on August 22 in 2020. Now that the domaine is smaller, following his two brothers’ secessions, he is able to be ultra precise about harvest date, sampling parcel by parcel, he tells me, and small volumes of wine mean longer élevage is feasible too. Percentages of new oak are down a touch in 2020, with no new wood at all for the grands crus, but foudres and larger barrels are also out of the picture, Damien finding most coopers’ 228-liter barrels more consistent, and in any case, better adapted to vinifying smaller quantities. Pure, precise and flavorful, the 2020s are a terrific success at this address.

An expressive, and slightly riper, nose consists of notes of white and yellow peach, herbal tea and a similar touch of petrol character. The sleek and intense medium-bodied flavors possess a lovely texture while delivering fine depth and persistence for a Chassagne villages on the nicely dry finale. Good quality here and worth a look.
