Sur Pointe describes when champagne bottles are stored upside down, on their necks. Bottles are held this way after riddling, while waiting to be disgorged, and are usually put into crates or cages to hold them in place.

This method may also be used for the long-term storage of undisgorged bottles that still contain sediment, to concentrate the sediment in the neck so that the lees have a minimal continuing effect on the wine. Some say that wine keeps better when left undisgorged and stored this way, staying fresher for a longer period of time. Others prefer to disgorge wines normally before long-term storage.

The alternative to storage ‘sur pointe’ is ‘sur latte’.

In order to drink a bottle that is stored ‘sur pointe, it must first be manually disgorged, in a process called disgorgement à la volée.

Feeling Thirsty?

Fruit for the Fratelli Alessandria 2021 Barolo del Comune di Verduno comes from five vineyard sites in Verduno: Riva Rocca, Rocche dell'Olmo, Campasso, Pisapola and Boscato. This was the first Barolo del Comune di Verduno to hit the market (with the 2017 vintage). The bouquet focuses on redcurrant and tart cherry, and there is a pinch of cinnamon buried in there as well. This is a pretty Barolo that manages elegance and an easy-drinking style. This 20,000-bottle release ages in Slavonian and Fre

Here a more reticent and cooler nose is both gamier and spicier. The super-sleek medium-bodied flavors possess a gorgeous mouthfeel together with solid power on the more refined and ever-so-slightly longer and notably firmer finish. This is impeccably well-balanced but in contrast to the Bressandes, extended patience will absolutely be necessary, indeed I would suggest not touching a bottle before 10 years of age. 2037+Allen Meadows, Burghound (92-95) Points

Albino Rocca ‘Cottà’ Barbaresco 2017

Nebbiolo | Piedmont, Barbaresco

“One of the highlights in this range, the 2017 Barbaresco Cottà possesses tremendous depth along with the sheer breadth that is the key signature of this Neive cru. Black cherry, plum, leather, licorice, mint and lavender soar out of the glass, all with the backing of serious tannins that are going to need time to soften. This is impressive stuff.” Antonio Galloni, Vinous
