At 400-450 metres' altitude, Meixeman is a 1.2 hectare plot of very old organically grown vines from a 'two-faced' vineyard: the larger part is relatively coolly oriented slate facing south-east; the other is warmer iron-rich granitic soil facing south-west. This 'heritage vineyard' was replanted after phylloxera in 1907 by Pedro's grandmother, using remnants of the site's own genetics which survived the pestilence. The grapes are foot-trodden, 40% whole bunch, 16 days maceration on skins and st

Bindi KAYE Pinot Noir 2023

Pinot Noir | Victoria, Australia

This is a very sentimental wine from our most elevated vineyard, planted in 2001, that pays tribute to my mother, Kaye. It's a vineyard with a stunning perspective over the other vineyards, the winery, house and to the forests and hills beyond. There are some lovely metaphors, no doubt. The site has a lot of quartz and mudstone, a smattering of volcanic soils that have eroded down from the volcanic plateau above, and produces a wine of fragrance, structure and complexity. The 2023 Kaye is alread

Giacosa’s Nebbiolo d’Alba uses fruit sourced solely from the Roero area, and the wine alongside both the Arneis and Nebbiolo Valmaggiore from here have a long and storied history with Bruno Giacosa. It is no coincidence that 1974 saw the first bottling of both Arneis and Nebbiolo d’Alba from Giacosa, as they were sourced from the same growers. The same is mostly true today, and where the Arneis is grown in the predominantly North-facing slopes of the vineyards in Roero, the Nebbiolo comes

Domaine SC Guillard Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes 'Réniard' 2022
Old vine depth & persistence
Deep crimson, quite deep colour. The nose is layered with berry fruit, raspberry, wild strawberry, cassis and briary fruit. There is lovely perfume lift and a purity of fruit, a good lick of new oak just appears, it is a super fresh and delineated wineThe palate is beautifully balanced and finely structured with spice, red berry loads of silky tannins and a long driven finish. The old vines providing depth and persistence. Lovely balance and length.Drink 2027-2040.Tom Carson

Here too there is a mentholated top note present on the more sauvage and forest floor nuanced aromas of red and dark currant. I very much like the sense of underlying tension suffusing the even more mineral-driven middle weight flavors that coat the palate with dry extract that buffers the very firm tannic spine shaping the beautifully long finale. This serious, austere and compact effort is quite tightly wound and a wine that is unlikely to make for especially interesting drinking young; then a

Le Baroncole is made from 97% Sangiovese and 3% Canaiolo grapes. The initial stages of its production are the same as Chianti Classico but it is then aged in barriques for between 16 to 20 months, bottled unfiltered and held for a further six months prior to release. Here's a beautiful bottle from San Giusto a Rentennano that outperforms dozens of wines from the appellation that are priced two or three times higher than this. The organic 2021 Chianti Classico Riserva Le Baròncole is incr

Year after year Bouland has turned stunning, beautiful wines! This is the only Cuvée of the 4 we offer from the 2023 vintage I haven't had a chance to taste. Word from those I trust is that it is looking sharp! One of the wineries I buy from each year without hesitation.

Earthy, savoury, delicate spice, sitting beautifully with darker fruits and more apparent stalk tannin. The acid, tannin, alcohol complex working beautifully. A ripping edition of this perennial favourite. As with the other Cuvées it's more immediate approachability than previous vintages. I typically find Bouland's wines need at least 18 months to 2 year to resolve and for their tension to relax following bottling. This will undoubtedly offer more with time in bottle.

Daniel Bouland Morgon Bellevue Cailloux MAGNUM 2023
Ridiculous Yields!
Of the two Bellevue Cuvées, the Cailloux has better balance and energy with a touch less alcohol and a touch more acid. Excellent darker, earthier profile than the Chiroubles. Beautifully weighted, plump fruit with a spice layer and just a little playful stalk tannin grip keeping the palate lively and, with that fine line of acid, refreshing. Any excellent rendition and like the other 2023's more immediate approachability than previous vintages. I typically find Bouland's wines need at least 18

I first had the junior wine of this back in 1994 while studying winemaking in Adelaide. Over the decades it has become more refined. A great expression of Barbera. Those in the know will tell you that good vineyards planted to Barbera in Asti will beat the bounty of average sites that have been planted to the variety in Alba."The 2021 Barbera d'Asti La Crena is exceptional. Bright, red-toned fruit, chalk, mint, white pepper and rose petal are all beautifully delineated. In recent times V

Yarra Yering Dry Red No.2 2019
Seduction by Wine!

Yarra Yering Dry Red No.2 2019

Shiraz/Syrah | Yarra Valley, Australia

The original Shiraz Viognier blend .. with a spalsh ofMataro! A complex and layered wine; sweet and savoury all at once. The fragrance is melting pot of violets, plums, savoury spices and a whiff of bramble and five spice. Moderate in weight; the summer pudding fruits come in all colours dialling up the flavour interest. There is cigar box and cardamom spice lending intrigue. Firm yet fine tannins ably support the fruit and texture drive the palate. This one is hard to put in a box, there is so

Luigi Pira Barolo ‘Margheria’ 2017

Nebbiolo | Serralunga d'Alba, Barolo

All south-facing and sitting at 340 metres, vinification is the same as the Barolo ‘Serralunga’. Intense and complex nose with notes of fruit and flowers and hints of leather and fresh hay, while on the palate it’s perfectly knit and very distinctive, red fruited in style with ironstone, choc-cherry, roses and some of the darker notes of cola and porcini, along with textural red plum-skin, grippy, black-tea tannins that underpin, but it’s still generous and very approachable now.
