From one of the Barolo Boys, it’s only fitting that 2013 has ended up as the release in the year of Domenico’s Passing. A Barolo with a great purity of darker fruit, hints of tar, and, a perfumed lift of violets. Just a lick of oak adding to the wine’s complexity. Lovely generosity and length of fruit. Long even tannins.
Every so often a vintage comes along that is deserved of the hype. The Vietti 2013’s are stunners! At almost 1/4 the price of the Cru’s the Castiglione is a bargain! Trademark Vietti, balance, poise, a delicious backbone of fruit. Put together with a level of restraint, resulting in great harmony.
There’s a subtlety that Massimo builds into his wines that beautifully present the fragrant fruit of his Nebbiolo wines. Perfumed fruit matches layered dense tannins. There’s a brooding darkness to the mid-palate, hints of woody herbs and tar. Vibrant and fresh with a lick of oak to support it without interfering. In need of further time in bottle to settle. Make sure to give it some air in glass.
