This wine is from the old block of MV6 Pinot Noir planted in 2001. We did about 20% whole bunch in the ferments in 2017, which has given the wine quite a punchy and fragrant aroma, that evolves nicely as the wine sits in the glass. It was aged in 500 litre French oak puncheons, on lees for 11 months, about 15% new.
The bouquet is dominated by the cherry and red fruit spectrum (strawberry, spice, plum) with a really punchy and lifted floral element. It’s dense and complex, and draws you in. The most detailed and captivating aromas we have seen in this wine.
The palate is, at this stage, quite primary in flavour and tannin profile; but the hallmark silky tannins and lovely flow across the palate is there. Fine and persistent and detailed, it has a chewiness and density to the tannins that drives the length. One of our best.

Tom introduced me to Burgundian producers like Rousseau, Lignier, Lafarge, Engel, Ponsot, Mugnier and dozens of others. Australian Pinot producers are now comfortable enough to say they’re not trying to make Burgundy, but, drinking Burgundies from great producers helps winemakers explore finer concepts around textures, fruit flavours, freshness, generosity, restraint and where in the continuum of balance Pinot can sit. More importantly how time in the cellar can impact this. All this leads to pushing the little 1 percenters that can take a wine from being good to being great.
The 2017 growing season was characterised by an even and mild spring, that led into a cool and mild summer. There were plenty of fine and mild days. In fact it was very similar to 2015 and 2010, in terms of the weather and. as it turns out, the wines as well.
We began picking in late February with the Chardonnay and Pinot Noir and finished in early April with the Grenache Noir and the Italians. The 2017 wines are as good a set of wines as we have produced from this vineyard. They are fine, detailed, beautifully balanced and captivating. It seems to us, at this early stage, this is the highest quality vintage we have seen at Serrat.
