Why is this Wine so Yummy?

About Laurent Tribut

Laurent Tribut, who is the brother-in-law of Vincent Dauvissat, has retired to leave this 8 ha domaine in the hands of his three children, Solange, Adéline and Gabriel.

Laurent Tribut did not come from a winemaking family himself, but, when he married Marie-Clotilde Dauvissat of the famed Domaine Dauvissat estate, he joined in the family’s winemaking tradition. Laurent spent a decade learning winemaking from his brother-in-law, Vincent Dauvissat, and father-in-law, René, before founding his own Domaine in 1987. Laurent and Marie-Clotilde live in a large, restored farmhouse with vineyards behind their property and only a few miles away from Vincent Dauvissat.

Solange, Adeline and Gabriel, three of their four children now work at the domaine. Solange, a lovely, charming, bright, and gentle lady, studied viticulture and winemaking in Beaune. Highly-skilled, she is fully in charge of the winemaking, under her father’s watchful eye. Together with her siblings, they shape wines that are classic and seductively textured.

Although Laurent Tribut has just recently retired, his signature style is clearly palpable in the wines, and he is often seen on his tractor, carefree and contented around the Chablisien vineyards.

The future of Domaine Laurent Tribut is in very capable and gifted hands.

In the Vineyards

Tribut has village holdings of Chablis in addition to 1er Cru Beauroy, 1er Cru Côte de Léchet & 1er Cru Montmains.

In the Winery

Like his brother-in-law, Vincent Dauvissat, Laurent believes in ageing his wines in oak barrels (7 to 8 years old) after fermentation in steel cuvees.

The wines are revealing greater finesse and refinement in recent years. They are pure, well-balanced, powerfully driven, and classically chiselled Chablis, with great ability to age. They show intensity, stature and energy.

The 2020 Vintage at Laurent Tribut

Laurent Tribut’s three daughters—Solange, Adéline, and Gabriel—are well-ensconced at this important eight-hectare domaine; and their 2020s, which had just been racked to barrel after their fermentation in tank, bear all the hallmarks of a lovely vintage, somewhat reminiscent at this early stage of the Tributs’ 2017s. As I’ve written before, moderate yields, hand-harvesting at full maturity, fermentation in enameled steel and élevage in used wood on the lees are the rudiments of the approach here—an approach familiar to followers of the wines of Laurent Tribut’s brother-in-law, Vincent Dauvissat, in whose cellars Tribut’s wines were once produced. Farming is de facto organic but not certified as such. And none of that seems to have changed with the new generation at the helm.

90-92 Points

The 2020 Chablis Village offers up aromas of sweet orchard fruit, fresh bread, citrus oil and blanched almonds. Medium-bright and precise, with a fleshy core of fruit and a saline finish, it's very promising.
