A French term. The process of Sélection Massale or Mass Selection in English requires a vigneron to know their vineyard intimately, to walk it, and, select individual vines to take cuttings from to grow new vines from. They select the best vines eliminating the poorest.

A French term. The process of Sélection Massale or Mass Selection in English requires a vigneron to know their vineyard intimately, to walk it, and, select individual vines to take cuttings from to grow new vines from. They select the best vines eliminating the poorest. Grapevines are easily propagated using cuttings. Depending on how the vineyard was established there may be a diversity of genetic material in the vineyard or simply a single a clone. Clones of different grape varieties are propagated from the one single parent vine, hence the term clone. Where there is a diversity of genetic material Sélection Massale can help maintain diversity compared to the planting of a single clone.

Feeling Thirsty?

Grumello is to the east of Sondrio on the opposite side to Sassella making for a fascinating comparison in site! Of the three Superiores this looks the darkest, the tannins sit more aggressively, yet, not overly so. With a plate of food you'd not notice. A little shorter than the other Superiores. The acid appears higher. Another complex offering from Ar.Pe.Pe. A little disjointed at the moment. It is the wine I am least certain of in term of it's evolution as it ages.

While Vietti's Villero is their Top Wine. This is my favorite! I had a 1997 not long ago that was breathtaking!The 2017 Barolo Rocche di Castiglione shows all the signatures of this site, all turned up to the maximum. I am not sure I have ever tasted a Vietti Castiglione with this much heft. Super-ripe dark red fruit, rose petal, mocha, dried herbs and menthol all build in an ample, resonant Barolo. Readers should be prepared to cellar the 2017 for the next handful of years, perhaps longer.

Giacosa’s Nebbiolo d’Alba uses fruit sourced solely from the Roero area, and the wine alongside both the Arneis and Nebbiolo Valmaggiore from here have a long and storied history with Bruno Giacosa.
