White Wine

From racy, crisp, Riesling, to rich full-bodied Chardonnay the white wine world has an incredible array of wine styles on offer.

Head to the Rhône Valley, where you’ll, Viognier, Roussane and Marsanne with their amazing textures and spice. Cross the border to Italy and it’s Arneis, Verdicchio, Greco, Carricante, and, Garganega offering up often flavours very different to those of Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.

Revel in the diversity of white wine styles created, as winemakers seek to balance sugar, acid, alcohol, phenolics, the use of oak, lees, and, skin contact to create wines of harmony and personality.

Perhaps in Riesling more than any other white wine will you find nearly every style imaginable.

The wine world is producing better wines than ever before. In regions where laws permit broad experimentation with growing and making white wines is resulting in rapid evolution and refinement of styles.

Australia’s push to evolve Chardonnay is the perfect example!

This single parcel, Inxertal, is inland and a site that recently had to be blended away as the 100 year old 0.15ha site yields only around 600kg of grapes. Thankfully this year they were able to bottle it again and we can see where the intensity of low yielding inland fruit meets that soulful expression from Alberto and Silvia. Rich yellow peach and flinty minerality on the nose, tightly wrapped by that 400L barrel. The particular site has a honeysuckle and floral aroma that is persistent year o

The 2022 & 2023 were MIND BOGGLING! Only 6 bottles up for grabs!NOTE ON THE 2023: The 2023 A Graña comes from a vineyard in the parish of Adina, and it has a different personality, not only because of its lower alcohol level (11.7%), contained ripeness and higher acidity but because it fermented and matured in a chestnut barrel (and 200 liters in stainless steel), kept with lees for nine months. The nose has a different profile, spicy and with notes of ... chestnut flowers?, with

Valentini Trebbiano d’Abruzzo 2021

Trebbiano | Italy, Abruzzo

By all accounts the 2021 is once again a demonstration of why Ian d'Agata decrees the Valentini's Trebbiano hails from another planet. This is only the 10th release of Trebbiano in the 21st century, such is Valentini's dedication to quality!NOTE on the 2020: More savory than sweet, the 2020 Trebbiano d'Abruzzo slowly opens with a rich blend of raw almonds and smoky crushed stone, giving way to dried nectarines and hints of sage. This seductress is ripe and succulent upon entry, yet with

Vigneti Massa Timorasso ‘Derthona’ 2023

Timorasso | Italy, Colli Tortonesi

From near extinction the Massa family have saved Timorasso, for that I am truly thankful! Massa’s Derthona is the perfect introduction to the serious end of the spectrum of Timorasso.Excellent build in depth and length with excellent oxidative line that sits perfectly with fine acid and insane lemon oil.Closed and a little subdued on the nose on opening. A richer iteration that has been tamed by a master craftsmen to offer us a textural, phenolic, luscious and every so slightly oily

Note: from a .67 ha parcel of Chardonnay. A moderately phenolic nose (olive oil nuances) is comprised by notes of citrus confit and whiffs of the exotic in the form of white peach, lychee and passion fruit. There is outstanding volume and richness to the succulent but decidedly powerful larger-bodied flavors that brim with minerality on the lemon-tinged finale that is firm and very dry but not especially austere.Allen Meadows, Burghound 91-93 PointsThe 2023 Musigny Blanc Grand Cru ex

Domaine Antoine Jobard Meursault 2023

Chardonnay | Meursault, Burgundy

Here too there is a whiff of the exotic lurking in the background of the aromas of jasmine tea, white flower and passion fruit. The very generously proportioned flavors are rich to the point of opulence with a highly seductive mouthfeel before tightening up on the impressively long, balanced and complex finale. This is an excellent Meursault villages that is warmly recommended plus it should age gracefully. ♥ Outstanding Top valueAllen Meadows, Burghound 89-92 PointsNM 90-92Not

Alphonse Mellot Sancerre La Moussière HALF 2020

Sauvignon Blanc | Sancerre, France

There’s Sauvignon and then there is Sauvignon from Sancerre. There’s Sancerre and then there is Dagenau. Then a pack chasing him. Mellot right at the front of that pack. Beautiful poise, delicacy and vertical long shape to the palate. Lovely bright fruit that has shifted beyond primary to aromas and flavours of intrigue. Crisp fine acid. This is an impressive drink. There’s a little passion fruit and gooseberry if you look for it. Overall it’s just a wonderful seemless Sauvignon Blanc.

Nascetta - Italy's answer to Gewurztraminer. Fragrant, spicy and fresh. This is a fun, youthful wine that is drinking well now but could possibly benefit from a little more time to develop, allowing the fruit and underlying structure to better harmonise. Wonderful aromas come swinging out of the glass, with pops of pity citrus, yellow stone fruits, white blossoms and a line of saline minerality. The palate marries ripe, juicy fruit with a savoury lines of lees and spicy white pepper; gentle p

A.Rodda ‘Whitlands’ Chardonnay 2024

Chardonnay | Victoria, Australia

The latest addition to Adrian's Chardonnay range. The Baxendale is supple plush, clean & long. For mine the most immediately approachable Australian Chardonnay just keeps getting better and better. Last year I was tasting a line of OK white Burgundy then moved onto A.Rodda's Chardonnays & BOOM! They're superb wines. The Whitlands (formerly Blaxendale) is supple plush, clean & long mouthfeel. For mine the most immediately approachable. The acid a bit more resolved. Oak nicely balanced,

Selbach Oster Wehlener Sonnenuhr Kabinett Riesling 2017

Riesling | Mosel-Saar-Ruwer, Germany

This is a beauty, graceful with a certain transparency to it. The freshness, combined with excellent depth and length is classic Kabinett. Like Max F Richter, the use of large old wood for fermentation and maturation harmonises the wine beautifully. A joy to devour! “Great Mosel Kabinett should be like drinking cool spring water; thirst quenching and delicious.” Johannes Selbach

Arneis makes such beautiful wine. Morish and refreshing. A beautiful wine! Arneis makes such beautiful wine. Vietti's has a sophistication that gives restraint to the core of fruit that has great depth and length. Maple and a hint of baking spice layer on top of white nectarine and friends. Supple with just an edge of chalking phenolic grip, it has that wondeful silvery line of bitterness that cleans he palate up so well. Morish and refreshing. A beautiful wine!"... Wagner-Stempel Riesling Porphyr 2017

Riesling | Siefersheim, Germany

Beautifully balanced, it rests toward the acid side of the scales, with a touch less alcohol, taming rich luscious fruits. We often get seduced by opulence. Daniel's 2015's from sites yielding some of the ripest fullest fruit in the Rheinhessen certainly have such seduction. The 2016 Porphyr, beautifully balanced, it rests toward the acid side of the scales, with a touch less alcohol, taming rich luscious fruits. Such a sophisticated wine of great line and length.

On a spectrum of boldest to most elegant, Riesling in the Rheingau sits in the middle for me, making cracking dry Rizza with plenty of tension whilst have the balance to produce superb off-dry to sweet wines. The 2020 Rheingau adds incredible depth and length for an entry-level wine.Citrus perfume, white flowers, a little sulphur on open. Give it a decant. Lovely line and length. Fine sherbet acid. Monlia Colli Tortonesi Timorasso 2021

Timorasso | Piedmont, Colli Tortonesi

Released 6 months later than the 2020 and it shows immediately. The extra time offers up a beautifully resolved wine. There’s something about the texture, aroma and flavour profile of good Italian white. That silvery line of bitterness that graces the finish. Out to play, seamless, the texture is refined with an excellent phenolic play married to fine acid. When Pietro visited Wine Deoced HQ we talked of the gentle development large oak casks offer whilst retaining freshness in a wine. This is
