Vietti Barolo ‘Brunate’ 2017

Nebbiolo | La Morra, Italy

The 2017 Barolo Brunate is a powerful, brooding wine. Huge dark fruit, leather, spice, menthol and dried herbs all build in a potent Barolo that is enshrouded by tannins. The 2017 is going to need quite a bit of time in the cellar. Today, it is very much a brooding powerhouse. Dark wild cherry, licorice, tar, menthol and spice take shape in the glass, but the 2017 is clearly an infant, and an unruly one at that. Drink 2025 - 2042 Galloni

Vietti Barolo ‘Ravera’ 2017

Nebbiolo | Novello, Italy

The 2017 Barolo Ravera is a powerhouse. My impression is that the 2017 is going to develop into something truly special. It has all the energy that makes this site so distinctive, but with an extra kick of fruit density and a whole range of exotic aromatics that make for a truly drop dead gorgeous wine. Bright red/purplish fruit, rose petal, chalk and white pepper build into a finish laced with searing intensity. This is such and impressive wine. Drink 2027 - 2042 Galloni

Vietti Barolo ‘Lazzarito’ 2017

Nebbiolo | Serralunga d'Alba, Italy

Vietti's 2017 Barolo Lazzarito is absolutely gorgeous. Whatever the challenges of the growing season, they appear to have been no problem here. More than anything else, the Lazzarito impresses with its magnificent depth and stature. Super-ripe red fruit, white pepper, mint, tobacco, cured meat, spice and rose petal open gradually with time in the glass. I would not be in a rush to open bottles anytime soon. The Lazzarito has been one of the most improved wines at Vietti for a number of years. Th

Domenico Clerico Barolo ‘Bricotto’ 2021

Nebbiolo | Piedmont, Barolo

Excellent generosity, savoury with a rich core of perfumed fruit and fine, elegant tannin. Mostly sand in the vineyards of Bussia here. Plush, blood red fruit mix with a pinch of baking spice. Chocolatey fanning out generously. Only 13 times since 1978. Consistency of weather throughout the year the key. A welcoming wine with great finesse. It's a demonstration of just how different the terroirs of Monforte are, justifying the work being done to break it down into a more granular set of MGAs.

One of the most profound Clos des Forêts I've had from Arlot! Great core of dark fruit. Lovely tannins 100% destemmed after starting in 2021 with destemming. Very complete wine. Showing great touch. That lovely balance that sees it in a style between Gevrey and Vosne-Romanée. Plush, fine & super long. Perfumed with roses and delicate spice. Soft fine. Immediate approachability yet this will clearly offer so much more with time in bottle. Give this 7 years and you’ll be happy give it 15 a

A more discreet if still easily perceptible dollop of wood can be found on the more deeply pitched aromas of poached plum, forest floor and a more subtle hint of the sauvage. The supersleek, intense and beautifully textured medium weight flavors exude evident minerality on the powerful, youthfully austere and beautifully balanced finale that displays excellent length. One to look for. Drink: 2034+Allen Meadows, Burghound 92-95 Points Sweet spot OutstandingThe 2022 Gevrey-Chambertin 1
Giovanni Sordo Barolo Riserva 'Rocche di Castiglione' 2001
The Super Stars!
Lifting the level to Sordo's Riserva Range is always Fun! Winery Direct from an exceptional Barolo Year! Fabulous, both in itself and as a contrast to Villero. Where Villero is delicate and persistent, all finesse, Rocche is much more forceful with a similar range of characters. Everything is darker, deeper and more. The glory of this pre-eminent cru is the combo of style and power; how such waves and complexities stay in such long and vibrant shape. A great Barolo here. All aged releases hav

Notwithstanding the Clos des Epeneaux, Leroux has always said that if there was one 1er Cru that would tempt him back to Pommard it would be Les Rugiens. A new long-term contract with the same owner as the Volnay Caillerets brought Leroux back to his old stomping ground in 2017 and so, once again he is working with the same iron-rich red clay soils that he did, so famously, at Comte Armand..“A brooding and reticent nose features liqueur-like aromas of poached plum, cassis and cool eart

A perfumed and strikingly pretty nose is at once wonderfully floral and spicy with its fresh essence of red pinot fruit. The fleshy and round yet decidedly powerful, intense and tautly muscular flavors exude a subtle minerality on the compact, youthfully austere and sneaky long finish. 2032"Allen Meadows, Burghound ♥ Outstanding

The 2021 Barolo Bricco Ambrogio is classy and polished to the core. This wine has come such a long way since its debut. Enrico Scavino really believed in this site when he purchased it a little more than 20 years ago. The 2021 is a fine testament to his vision. Lavender, sage, menthol and licorice lead into a core of dark-toned fruit in a Barolo that is deep yet also light on its feet. This is impeccably done, not to mention very tasty. A wonderfully spicy broad-ranging nose features pure notes of wild red currant, leather, earth and a hint of wood influence. The delicious, vibrant and muscular medium weight plus flavors possess a beguiling mid-palate texture while exuding a subtle bead of minerality on the balanced, lingering and youthfully austere finale. This is excellent though a wine destined for long-term keeping. (from a .50 ha holding; 20% whole clusters) 2037+Allen Meadows, Burghound (92-95) Points

This is one of the benchmark traditional Barolo's from a classic years! Every time I’ve tried Cavallotto’s ‘Vigna San Guiseppe’ I’ve gone to a very happed place. The core of fruit in is always insane. Having tasted a dozen of the best Baroli alongside Vigna San Guiseppe over many vintages, it’s clear this is up at the top of the list. Cavallotto’s always beautifully balances power with elegance.
