The 2018 Valpolicella Classico Superiore Cal del Merlo wafts up with an incredibly pretty, savory bouquet of dried Mediterranean herbs, geranium and citrus-tinged wild strawberries. It displays depths of ripe red and blue fruits underscored by crisp mineral tones as rosy inner florals arch across the palate, all over a core of tantalizing acidity. The finish is floral and long, leaving a tart sensation of raspberry as hints of lavender fade slowly. This is a supremely elegant and refined vinta

The 2018 Valpolicella Classico Superiore pulls the taster close to the glass with a darkly alluring blend of dried roses, violets, crushed stone, clove and blood orange. It washes across the palate with silken textures, lifted and finessed in the style of the vintage, as ripe wildberry fruits swirl beneath an air of sweet lavender. The word ethereal comes to mind as the 2018 tapers off with sweet tannins that provide a lovely framework to perfumed inner florals and hints of blackberry that reson

Domaine Louis Jadot Corton-Grèves Grand Cru 2019

Pinot Noir | Côte-de-Nuits, Aloxe-Corton

"Abundant menthol and wood nuances are present on the ripe aromas of black raspberry and sauvage scents. The dense, plush and less powerful flavors also exude evident minerality on the austere, focused and balanced finish that isn't quite as complex. Note that this classic Corton is also quite compact and in need of extended cellaring."Allen Meadows, Burghound

"Here too the wood treatment is no longer subtle though it stops short of dominating the pungently earthy humus-inflected mix of red and dark wild berries. There is outstanding volume to the delicious and plump but powerful large-scaled flavors that terminate in a mouthcoating, balanced and built-to-age finale. This possesses excellent development potential though it's not so structured that it couldn't be approached after 7 to 10 years even though it should easily reward 15+."Allen Meadows,

Oddero Barolo 'Rocche di Castiglione' 2017
Rare as Hens' teeth!
Rocche di Castiglione has to be one of my favourite Crus. The wines have incredible harmony, they are just so complete.I haven't had the chance to try this. I have devoured the 2017 Villero from just around the corner. Given Oddero's consistency through their range I'd say you're in for very safe bet here! The 2017 Barolo Rocche di Castiglione is a beautiful wine that captures the natural intensity of the year while maintaining the style of the site. Silky aromatic and wonderfully nua

I first tried Hubert Lignier's wines back in the 1990's & have never looked back! "A neighbour of Clos Baulet, this clay terroir at the bottom of a slope gives us more dense, tannic wines. Sometimes austere in its youth, it gradually takes on a fruity character accompanied by smoky or spicy notes." From Laurent Lignier

Jadot have turned out a divine Estournelles from 2018. Burghound's note of it being an understated style rings true. Many 2018 from Gevrey-Chambertin are bold in nature. Here we see a delicacy that has it showing fine and elegant. Tasted blind you'd possibly look to another village. Deceptive it is, with considerable depth and length. Poise, flow and shape, with a perfume floating over delicious fruit. Jadot again showing a deft hand in crafting a sophisticated Pinot full of personality. April 2

Layers of Silky Tannins!
The Lavaux is situated below Poissenot and next to Clos Saint Jacques. Lovely crimsonNose is in the darker fruit spectrum, some cassis and blackberry and that cherry liquor, a lick of new oak as always when the wine is young. Quite intense and deep. The palate is the most structured and intense, quite firm tannins and a real youthful energy to the palate. 'The 2019 Barolo Monvigliero shows a medium dark garnet appearance with an especially focused quality of fruit. There is wild cherry and Japanese plum, but the Monvigliero cru also delivers crushed rose, earthy iris root, candied orange peel with clove and dustings of black pepper. The wine is exceedingly silky and polished in texture, but its inherent complexity is never diminished. It should be interesting to revisit this bottle after the 10-year mark. Àlvaro Palacios ‘Finca Dolfi’ 2021

Garnacha | Spain, Catalunya

I had the pleasure of devouring the 2016 about 18 months ago over an aged scotch fillet with a friend. A wine of presence and importance. Along with the other Priorats I've had from Àlvaro it's clear he's got it right in both the vineyard and the winery. After all, to make a wine like the legendary L'Ermita you need mad skills!Even just after landing in the country when wines are a little out of sorts from shipping across the world, the perfume builds in the glass with all the trademark
