The first of the La Rioja Alta wines to receive Gran Reserva status. With last year's release, I didn't feel the quality difference from the Ardanza justified stocking another wine. With the release of the 2017 Arana we see a build in sophistication and restraint over the 2019 Ardanza. The additional age showing through in a more resolved wine.  High-toned, greater integration of oak playing much more subtly, a lacing of American oak and texturally much more refined. Energy, freshness mainta

The 2013 Reserva Viña Tondonia is a blend of 70% Tempranillo, 20% Garnacha and 10% Graciano and Mazuelo, grown in the calcareous soils of the Tondonia meander in Rioja Alta. Aged extensively in American oak, it offers restrained black fruit, wild herbs, balsamic hints and sweet spices with gentle cedar and vanilla notes. Medium-bodied with chalky grip and a layered, tertiary finish, this is a benchmark classic-refined, enduring and unmistakably Tondonia. Tasted May 2025 Drink 2025-2055

A highly aromatic, fruit-driven and perfumed nose of William’s pear, pineapple juice, apricot, passionfruit, banana flambé, honeyed peach and melon, all wrapped in white mint and a hint of toffee. Superbly sweet, unctuous and delicately smooth on the beautifully layered and intense palate. A tickly touch of acidity adds a gorgeous sensation of lightness to the nicely energetic and intense finish. A comparatively opulent and rich expression of auslese that flirts with BA presence. Julian Haart Piesporter Riesling 2020

Riesling | Mosel-Saar-Ruwer, Germany

"The 2020er Piesporter, as it is referred to on the red and silver consumer label, comes from the Goldtröpfchen. It offers a beautifully fresh, spicy, and floral nose of green herbs, smoke, pepper, white peach, greengage, almond, and still residual scents from its spontaneous fermentation. The wine is very straight and focused on the lively and even racy palate. It finishes bone-dry, pure, and vibrating with salty and spices elements. This dry wine is superbly balanced and shines through its en

AP: 10 21. The 2020er Graacher Domprobst Riesling Spätlese AP 10 was harvested mainly in different prime sectors of the vineyard and was fermented down to sweet levels of residual sugar. It offers a beautiful and subtly exotic nose made of pear, passion fruit, vineyard peach, apricot, whipped cream, aniseed herbs, and fine smoky spices. The wine is gorgeously light-footed on the fruity palate and leaves a superbly intense feel of melon, cassis, wet stone, and herbs in the nicely playfully fruit

The 2022 Wachenheimer Gerümpel P.C. is super clear, intense and flinty on the very elegant and refined nose that reveals extremely stony (basalt!) and saline aromas as well as substantial fruit aromas intermingled with sulfur-spring notes. Full-bodied, this is a pure, refined and saline, vibrantly fresh and expressive terroir Riesling with remarkable intensity and grip due to its rich minerals and serious tannins. This is an age-worthy Riesling that will hardly please any non-Riesling aficionad

The 2023 Gerümpel Wachenheim P.C. is clear, bright, elegant and fresh in its pure and aromatic bouquet that's on the lemon side of the fruit spectrum. Rich and generous but elegant and refined on the palate, this is a full-bodied, savory and textural Riesling with delicate and finely grained acidity and round, lush, intense and slightly creamy fruit. Domaine Thibert Pouilly-Vinzelles ‘Les Longeays’ 2020

Chardonnay | Pouilly-Fuisse, Burgundy

“Moderate wood is present on the aromas of prominent mineral reduction and smoky ripe essence of pear, anise and acacia blossom. There is again fine underlying tension to the stony and well-detailed middle weight flavors that terminate in a lingering and youthfully austere finale that is texturally akin to sucking on a small pebble. This isn't exactly rustic though it's clearly not as refined plus it could use better depth so a few years of keeping are advised. Highly recommended provided you

The 2023 Graacher Domprobst Riesling Spätlese #10 is very clear, fresh and precise on the spring-like nose. Flavors of crushed rocks, salts and lime zest drag into the glass, and the wine, once on the palate, is full of energy and very fine raisin, even blueberry and wax leaf aromas. This beautifully balanced and silky Domprobst Spätlese is full of finesse and reveals a playful, irresistible character with perfectly ripe fruit that is like an idea of fruit rather than material on the palate. Giuseppe Cortese Barbaresco Rabajà 2019

Nebbiolo | Piedmont, Barbaresco

🍇RABAJÀ RABAJÀ RABAJÀ 🇮🇹 The 2019 Barbaresco Rabaja is a powerful, austere wine that is going to need a number of years to come around. I very much like the energy, but readers should not plan on opening a bottle any time soon, as the 2019 is seriously tannic and shut down at the moment. It’s a gorgeous Barbaresco that shows the more elegant hand that defines the approach today.Antonio Galloni, Vinous 94 PointsThe Rabajà sees a jump in sophistication depth and length.
