Weinbach Cuvée Theo Riesling 2021

Riesling | France, Alsace

Monopole of young vines at the base of Schlossberg in Le Clos des Capucins. Fascinating initially a little estery, openning in the glass to reveal fruit with savoury complex spices a little apricot kernel. Soft round and luscious. Rich with exceptional élévage / development. So together. A lovely dirty earthy edge to complement the fruit. Long fine textural so long powerful and muscular real presence. There is a Marcel Deiss thing going on here. “Delightful nose of pink grapefruit,

Weinbach Muscat 2021
Dry

Weinbach Muscat 2021

Muskat Ottonel | France, Alsace

“The 2021 Muscat was grown in the Clos des Capucins, the walled vineyard surrounding the house. It has a lovely lemon and elderflower scent, like a spring breeze. The palate is very fluid, almost rounded, and bone-dry, making this a charming, light-bodied aperitif style. There is the merest edge of phenolics which adds a little structure. The finish is lemony and dry.”Anne Krebiehl MW, Vinous 90 Points

Moreau-Naudet Chablis 2021

Chardonnay | France, Burgundy

Moreau’s village Chablis is drawn chiefly from 20- to 30-year-old vineyards in Préhy and Courgis, both south of Chablis. Then, there are parcels in Chablis and Chichée (under the Premier Cru vines of Vaugiraut/Vosgros). All up, the domaine works with 30 parcels scattered across the appellation, representing a variety of soil structures and exposures. All the fruit from the younger vines is sold off in bulk, lifting the standard in general. The 2021 Chablis was picked over various dates, dep

Claudio Mariotto ‘Cavallina’ Derthona Timorasso 2021

Timorasso | Piedmont, Colli Tortonesi

Absolutely delicious, beautiful weighting and flow, lovely acid profile & florals, refreshing just a lick of phenolics to add play to the texture. So much energy and direction. A little bit of soft green leafy herb. Spice, nicely layered lees. Harmonious. Complete. Citrus oils, lemon and much more. The fuller and richer of the two as usual.

Claudio Mariotto ‘Cavallina’ Derthona Timorasso 2020

Timorasso | Piedmont, Colli Tortonesi

The 2020 Cavallina is a fascinating iteration. Epic tension and minerality see it super tightly wound and taking time to resolve and build generosity. I initially tasted this over a year ago and saw the epic potential waiting for us. 6 months later it was only just starting to settle. It's one to be patient with. While the 2021 is a delicious drink straight out of the gate the 2020 is going to need time. It has a wonderful funk that I associate with low pH wines that have seen time on lees. All

The 2022 Goliardo A Telleira shows lots of finesse. They changed the élevage here to 1,500-litre foudre, which they think works better for Albariño than barrels, no matter how big they are, and this wine clearly shows it. It has the finesse of the sandy soils and a polished texture (a little more sleek, a bit à la Chenin) but still lively and with pungent flavors.Luis Gutiérrez, The Wine Advocate 95+ PointsMy Note on the 2021: Simply delicious. Ridiculous for the coin. Citrus oil

Drawn from three hectares on the steep slopes opposite Fourchaume, Bessin’s ‘flagship’ cuvée is blended from six parcels of the domaine’s oldest village-level vines in La Chapelle-Vaupelteigne. These vines were planted between 1950 and 1974 across Kimmeridgian marl and Portlandian soils of varying exposures. The grapes were pressed as bunches and fermented with indigenous yeasts. The wine aged for 18 months in a temperature-controlled tank, with a small amount going into neutral oak. A

François Villard Saint-Joseph ‘Mairlant’ 2020

Shiraz/Syrah | Saint-Joseph, France

Love the perfume here very complete long layered fine, dark and red fruit with brooding and stalk. Harmonious with subtle pepper pop. Excellent élévage, fine acid. Build in structure and mid-palate grip, giving energy. Playful fun.Excellent comparision with Hauts Châssis’ Saint-Joseph made with no whole bunches.Saturated violet color. Vibrant, spice-tinged dark berry, cherry, potpourri and licorice aromas are sharpened by a smoky mineral flourish. Fresh blackberry and bitter

Gorelli Rosso di Montalcino 2019

Sangiovese | Tuscany, Italy

Speller is on the money, this is still closed (April 2023). Builds with time in the glass, the fruit leans toward the fine Burgundian style. The tannins are just a little edgy, as with the Brunello, as the new Botti season future vintages should see further refinement to the texture.  This clearly sits in between the Rosso & Brunello level. I like the cranberry descriptor and would add a musk and rose top note. A few years in bottle should see the tannins resolve fully and mid-palate weight

Ansitz Waldgries Südtiroler Weissburgunder Riserva ‘ITOS’ 2020

Weissburgunder | Trentino-Alto Adige, Italy

What he achieves by a combo of half vinified in stainless steel and half the ferments in barrel, is the ideal melding of the racy with the complex and textured.A pretty flash Weissburgunder AKA Pinot Bianco! Excellent drinking. A layer of that shroomy, wet wool earthy funk I often see, and enjoy in high acid whites. White flowers perfume. Ripe white grapefruit. Counterpointed with a little stonefruit, fresh and zippy. Chalky acid with a dusting of phenolics adds cleansing grip. Superb long

Bruno Giacosa Spumante 2019

Pinot Noir | Lombardy, Italy

Bruna Giacosa persists with her father’s interest in producing a very small batch sparkling wine in most good vintages, a Blanc de Noirs made in methode Champenois and aged on lees for between 2-3 years. Though a curio even in the storied history of Giacosa, it is a wine steeped in historical significance for the winery. An avid lover of the great house Champagnes, Giacosa sought to create his own ‘metodo classico’ that was distinctly Italian stylistically. In the early 1980s, the modern

Yeringberg Pinot Noir 2019

Pinot Noir | Yarra Valley, Australia

"The 2019 Pinot Noir combines the kind of ripeness and generosity, delicacy and finesse that characterise great Pinot Noir. Initially reserved, the nose offers notes of sun-kissed strawberry, blood plum and rose petal, together with exotic hints of musk and nutmeg. The palate has a supple richness, with a depth of flavour built on both the character of the vintage and the age of the vines. Juicy strawberry fruit, plum and rhubarb flavours are underpinned by an almost luxuriant structure that’s
