Readers will know that I tend to prefer Bouley’s Fremiers to his Rugiens, but in this vintage, it appears to be the brilliant 2020 Pommard 1er Cru Les Rugiens Hauts that’s the king of the cellar. Unwinding in the glass with scents of blueberries and raspberries mingled with exotic spices, rose petals, bergamot and smoked tea, it’s full-bodied, satiny and seamless, with a deep, layered core, racy acids and a pure, seamless profile. This magical bottle recalls the depth and concentrat

A more discreet if still easily perceptible dollop of wood can be found on the more deeply pitched aromas of poached plum, forest floor and a more subtle hint of the sauvage. The supersleek, intense and beautifully textured medium weight flavors exude evident minerality on the powerful, youthfully austere and beautifully balanced finale that displays excellent length. One to look for. Drink: 2034+Allen Meadows, Burghound 92-95 Points Sweet spot OutstandingThe 2022 Gevrey-Chambertin 1

Giacomo Conterno Barolo ‘Francia’ 2020

Nebbiolo | Serralunga d'Alba, Barolo

The 2020 Barolo Francia is a soaring, classically austere wine built for the cellar. Medium in body and driving, with tons of mineral intensity, the 2020 is an evocative wine that makes me think about the future. This is what young Barolo should be - vibrant and stern, but with the purity of fruit that is typical here. The 2020 is so wonderfully alive.Antonio Galli, Vinous 98 Points

Giacomo Conterno Barolo ‘Cerretta’ 2020

Nebbiolo | Serralunga d'Alba, Barolo

The most northern of Conterno's Serralunga holdings The 2020 Barolo Cerretta is a potent, packed wine. Today, the tannins are especially imposing and also larger in scale than the other Barolos in this range. Dark red-toned fruit, orange peel, white pepper and crushed rocks all race out of the glass. This is a wine for those with patience.Antonio Galloni, Vinous 96 PointsThe Cerretta Cru (purchased in 2008) is north of the township of Serralunga, which lies above Prapo and next to Ba

Domaine Faiveley Corton Charlemagne Grand Cru 2022

Chardonnay | France, Aloxe-Corton

A more restrained nose only grudgingly displays its aromas of Granny Smith apples, anise, mineral reduction and more discreet floral elements. The racy and tautly muscular largebodied flavors possess a really lovely texture thanks to the abundant sappy dry extract that also serves to buffer the firm acidity shaping the beautifully long, stony and impeccably well-balanced finale. This also needs to develop better depth but given how tightly wound it is, and given the evident quality of the underl
Combining richness with precision, an incredible texture & complexity make it almost impossible to describe this wine! The hallmarks of greatness. This wine truly takes me to a happy place.Tasted next to Krug NV, a very good bottle at that, the Egly was inspirational. The élévage of this wine is simply perfect. Taking the time to mature base wines before blending and bottling makes an incredible difference to fruit of this quality, adding 70 months on lees has brought this wine together b

R.Pouillon ‘Chemins du Bois’ Grand Cru MAGNUM 2014

Pinot Noir | Mareuil-sur-Aÿ, France

“This is our foundation-wine as so many things started with this parcel. First of all, because it’s one of Champagne’s oldest massal selections. Afterwards and most especially because it gave me the idea for my Méthode Fabrice Pouillon used to make all my wines.”

Stéphane Ogier Côte-Rôtie Lieux-Dits 'La Belle Hélène' 2017
Burgundy meets Côte-Rôtie
Côte-Rôtie is often compared to Burgundy for it's detailed vineyard breakdown. Like Burgundy we see dramatic differences in the wines from vineyard to vineyard. Stéphane has a great number of lieux-dits that he works with through the Côte-Blonde (southern part of Côte-Rôtie) and Côte-Brune (northern part of Côte-Rôtie).Stéphane makes wines of greater energy and vibrancy, always on the fresher end of the spectrum.La Belle Hélène from Côte Rozier, a parcel of Stéphane's oldes

Domaine Faiveley ‘Mazis Chambertin’ Grand Cru 2020

Pinot Noir | Gevrey-Chambertin, Burgundy

Mazi is alway a favourite. Hugely long yet impeccably well-balanced! The 2020 Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru is deep and brooding, unfurling in the glass with aromas of blackberries, peonies, loamy soil and sweet soil tones. Full-bodied, ample and velvety, its concentrated core of fruit is framed by rich, powdery tannins and succulent acids. It's a worthy follow-up to the brilliant 2019.William Kelley, The Wine Advocate 93-95+ BH 92-94

The 2022 Pommard 1er Cru Les Rugiens Hauts is exquisite, wafting from the glass with aromas of sweet wild berries mingled with peonies, rose petals, blood orange and spices. Medium to full-bodied, deep and layered, it's concentrated and mineral, its cool and lively core of fruit framed by very fine, powdery tannins, concluding with a long, perfumed finish. It's reminiscent of an even more complete, accomplished version of Bouley's 2015, reflecting all the work in the vineyards and refinement in

Giacomo Conterno Barolo ‘Francia’ 2021

Nebbiolo | Serralunga d'Alba, Barolo

The 2021 Barolo Francia is a vertical, explosive Barolo endowed with tons of energy. Bright acids and fine beams of tannin provide the framework for this striking young Barolo. All the elements are so well balanced. Time in the glass brings out an interplay of mineral-drenched energy, persistence and textural breadth. There's a lot of structure, and yet the tannins feel fine-grained and finessed.I especially admire its translucent energy. Magnificent. Antonio Galli, Vinous 99 Points

This was one of the few wines in the line-up to display any appreciable reduction and in this case it's enough to mask the underlying fruit. The suave, round and highly seductive medium-bodied flavors possess a caressing texture yet there is good underlying power to the acceptably long and complex finale. This seemed slightly out of sorts though I suspect that it will better harmonize once in bottle.Allen Meadows, Burghound 90-93 Points
