Les Champonnets, situated on the same line as the Grands Crus and very near to Ruchottes-Chambertin, is tucked up high near the entrance of the Lavaux combe (or valley). Mortet's parcel here used to make up almost half of his 1er Cru bottling above, and 2014 was the first year this parcel was vinified and bottled separately. It comes from a combination of very old vines (60-70 years old) and some younger, at around 30 years old. The soil is deep, yet with a strong limestone component that shows

Well I couldn't find a review of this and haven't had a chance to taste it. Given the other 9 wines from 2016 and 2017 I've tried it's hard to see this being anything but true to form and simply put a 2017 version of the 2016!My Note on the 2016:Opens with juicy crunchy fruit that takes just a little while to settle in. More immediately overt than the others. There’s a build in tannin here that when you relate it back to the vineyard location near Rugien and listen to Anne Parents

Valentini Trebbiano d’Abruzzo 2015

Trebbiano | Italy, Abruzzo

Good bright yellow. The pure, complex nose suggests lime, yellow apple and botanical herbs. Then very precise, intense and penetrating, if still youthfully unevolved, conveying a powerful, three-dimensional impression of extract and a deep, textured, multilayered mouthfeel. The wine closes very long and juicy, with herbal and saline elements that titillate the taste buds. Another outstanding wine from Valentini, who never misses a beat with his Trebbiano d’Abruzzo.Ian d'Agata, Vinous 93+ P

Vietti Barolo ‘Cerequio’ 2021

Nebbiolo | Piedmont, Barolo

Much more impact at the front end of the palate with a pleasing build in grip compared to the plush Brunate. Linear, long and fine. Lovely flowers. Long, even fruit of significant depth, with a lick of leather throwing in tar/slate/licorice complexity. Opening the class to reveal more opulence. Acid tannin complex is exceptional. Superb structure. The perfume is insane. Wow, as this builds in the glass, it builds in class, just opening beautifully. A lot of power.Paul Kaan, WINE DECODED Sep

Vietti Barolo ‘Monvigliero’ 2021

Nebbiolo | Verduno, Barolo

This is the baby in the bunch, representing one of the newest additions to the Vietti portfolio, with the first vintage produced in 2018. The learning curve in Monvigliero is always steep, or so most winemakers tell me, because very few can go to 100% whole-cluster fermentation. Indeed, the 2021 Barolo Monvigliero sees 60% whole clusters. The Vietti team is experienced, and this wine is pristine. This vintage was harvested on September 30th, and maceration was a bit shorter, at 20 days. The wine

Vietti Barolo ‘Brunate’ 2021

Nebbiolo | Piedmont, Barolo

Cracking Brunate! A very complete wine. Tannins are so refined, even through the front and middle palate. Round chocolateyt mid-palate that tapers a little. Incredibly elegant,  again a poised acid-tannin complex with ripe, layered, silky tannin. Actually builds post swallow. Perfectly ripe and balanced. Incredible length. The core of fruit is insane. Oppulent & exceptional.Paul Kaan, WINE DECODED Sept 2025Brunate is also one of my favorite wines from Vietti (and, boy, is it har

Vietti Barolo ‘Ravera’ 2021

Nebbiolo | Piedmont, Barolo

Pretty, red fruit. Beautifully developed. Impeccable élévage. An underlying tar/leather/slate notes layering in intriguing complexity. The Vietti crew have built quite a lot of structure into this Ravera of Novello. A wonderful example of Ravera making for a very complex iteration. Lovely generosity. Fine plush Neb tannin. Divine roses. Impressive!  Bud-break & harvest is around 2-3 weeks later than most of the other Communes for Vietti.Paul Kaan, WINE DECODED Sept 2025The 202

Vietti Barolo ‘Lazzarito’ 2021

Nebbiolo | Serralunga d'Alba, Barolo

Stunning immediate red fruits, wicked acid and epic long, even structured tannin. Serralunga to a T. Pun intended, for it has fine black tea aroma and flavours. Insane depth & a long, even core of fruit. Deceptive richness, drive & purity. Savoury. Impressive wine that will take time to reveal its true self. Recommend minimum 7 years in bottle. Such power with finesse.Paul Kaan, WINE DECODED Sept 2025Fruit for this wine comes from a three-hectare parcel in Serralunga d'Alba n

This one’s an argument for blending sites! The Barolo Via Nuova is an organic blend of fruit from six MGA sites: Terlo and Liste (in Barolo), Ravera di Monforte and Mosconi (in Monforte d’Alba) and Gabutti and Baudana (in Serralunga d’Alba). This wine represents a blend of fruit from various sites, and 15,000 bottles were created. Showing a classical profile, the E. Pira e Figli - Chiara Boschis 2021 Barolo Via Nuova delivers a firm sense of inner fiber and richness with dark bluebe

Ornellaia Bolgheri Superiore DOC 2019

Bordeaux Blend | Bolgheri, Italy

Ornellaia is undoubtedly the refined lady of the estate. The reviews for the 2019 are full of superlatives. Hope to get a little of this in a glass soon. For a long time I was unconvinced wines made from French varieties made in Italy. One wine stands out as changing my mind, 1990 Ornellaia, thanks Lou!Beautifully balanced and poised it was poured at an open wine night where the only criterion was that it had to be bloody good!62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Merlot, 4% Petit Verdot, 3% C

Thibaud Boudignon Savennières ‘Clos de La Hutte’ MAGNUM 2020

Chenin Blanc | Savennières, D'Anjou-Saumur

”The 2020 Clos de la Hutte is a wine that makes your shoulders drop such is its tranquility and sense of comfort in your mouth. It blooms in the mouth and does so without any sense of heaviness. The finish, scented with flowers and nectarines, is long, fragrant and textural. I hate using the word minerality as it means so many different things to people, but in my opinion, this has it in spades. It is incredible that the vines were only planted in 2011 on the schistous site on the grounds of a

Thibaud Boudignon Savennières ‘Clos de La Hutte’ MAGNUM 2022

Chenin Blanc | Savennières, D'Anjou-Saumur

Clos de la Hutte is always a stunning wine. My note on the 2021 read: "Epically good, long and fine. Harmony, seamless, delicacy with mid-palate presence and length. Nuanced, refined texture lined by superb phenolics. White flowers, super fresh white stone fruit, quince, hints of lemon oil & bees wax.  A little crème patissiere & baking spice. Intoxicating. Massive competitor with 1er Chassage, Puligny, Meursault. Incredible length."Although it's ungenerous on the nose, the
