Cogno Barolo ‘Bricco Pernice’ 2017

Nebbiolo | Piedmont, Barolo

"This is a medium-bodied Nebbiolo from a hot vintage with a ruby-tinged appearance. The 2017 Barolo Ravera Bricco Pernice shows generous inner fiber and richness with dried cherry, blackberry, plum and dark spice. Fruit for this wine comes from a beautiful amphitheater of vines with the perched town of Novello high up on the skyline. I love the especially smooth and soft quality to what is a powerful and lasting wine. "Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate 95 Points

Very ripe liqueur-like aromas of various black berries are nuanced by plenty of spice and floral elements. There is excellent underlying tension to the beautifully textured medium weight flavors that also brim with sappy dry extract and minerality, all wrapped in a bitter pit fruit finale that offers impressive persistence. This is definitely atypical but the intrinsic class of a fine Caillerets is still present. 2032+Allen Meadows, Burghound

The 2015 Granja Remelluri Gran Reserva is a blend of Tempranillo and Garnacha from their estate vineyards. It fermented with indigenous yeasts and matured in barrels of different origins and sizes for 27 to 29 months. The wine shows superb, an undated style of Gran Reserva, using grapes from the three different valleys they have in Remelluri to create their grand vin. It has a classical style, but the oak and the evolution is slower, and the texture shows more of the limestone from the soils. Th

Disgorged June 2023. Complantée comes from a single parcel in Avize that Agrapart co-planted (complantée) with six varieties: Pinot Noir, Meunier, Chardonnay and the heirloom Champagne varieties of Arbane, Petit Meslier and Pinot Blanc. Chardonnay accounts for one-quarter of the blend, with the remainder split equally between the other five varieties. The vines are all in the Fosse vineyard, the same site that gives us the great Vénus cuvée (the name of the specific vineyard parcel w

Benjamin Leroux Nuits Saint Georges 2022

Pinot Noir | Nuits-Saint-Georges, Côte-de-Nuits

This blend of Nuits-Saint-Georges climats includes the village lieu-dit Les Allots and three Premiers Crus: Les Cailles, Aux Thorey and Les Boudots. The lion’s share, however, is drawn from Aux Herbues on the Vosne border and a parcel in the northern part of Fleurières, just south of the town. This year, Les Tuyaux, a stony terroir at the very northern end of the appellation, has joined the party. The 2022 was entirely destemmed. My notes read “Very Ben Leroux” in that it’s a

Benjamin Leroux Pommard 2022

Pinot Noir | Pommard, Côte du Beaune

Given his experience in Pommard, home turf, if he'll have handle on any fruit this will be it! A lovely perfume, as expected still very youthful. Building in weight with tannins and fruit beautifully balanced. This seems to be very well dialed in and just in need of time. With excellent length and flow. It's looking incredibly complete. I'd be hiding it away for at least 7 years to really show you its potential. Having been the manager of Comte Armand for 15 years, Benjamin Leroux knows a

Margherita Otto ‘M8’ Barolo 2019

Nebbiolo | Serralunga d'Alba, Barolo

This one's another argument for blending sites! From a disciple of Maria Theresa Mascarello! Manly worked with Sandrone, Cavallotto and Altare before an extended stint with Maria-Therese Mascarello. When you look at these wineries the diversity of practices they employ, it makes for an exception foundation of experience to launch your own label as Alan did in 2015.  From what I've tasted thus far it's only a matter of time before these wines reach the cult status of his peers.

Where the Bourgogne is immediately approachable the village Chassagne Blanc needs a little more time. 1/3 from Les Masures next to Morgeot 2/3 Puligny side of Chassagne. Again this shows a wonderful progression through the quality standards in Burgundy. Jumping a rung in the ladder, the energy and precision is showing here. Whilst a full percentage lower in alcohol than the Bourgogne, it has greater depth and length. Current tightly wound, beautiful linear acid is supported nicely by a little te

Margherita Otto ‘M8’ Barolo 2020

Nebbiolo | Serralunga d'Alba, Barolo

This one's another argument for blending sites! From a disciple of Maria Theresa Mascarello! I've now had a chance to taste through a good wedge of 2020 Barolos. It reads as an interesting vintage. There are many tightly coiled wines at this point that will need time to build generosity. Manley's M8 is one of the highlights of my tasting thus far. It's a complete wine with a caressing shape and flow of fruit underpinned by long, even, layered, serious tannins. Complex with immediate generosity,

E. Pira (Chiara Boschis) Barolo ‘Via Nuova’ 2021

Nebbiolo | Serralunga d'Alba, Barolo

This one’s an argument for blending sites! The Barolo Via Nuova is an organic blend of fruit from six MGA sites: Terlo and Liste (in Barolo), Ravera di Monforte and Mosconi (in Monforte d’Alba) and Gabutti and Baudana (in Serralunga d’Alba). This wine represents a blend of fruit from various sites, and 15,000 bottles were created. Nebbiolo | Serralunga d'Alba, Barolo

This one's another argument for blending sites! From a disciple of Maria Theresa Mascarello! Barolo 2021 is a ripe, full-bodied wine in a showy package. The wine announces itself from the perfume: ripe and generous, lots of red fruits and floral aspects, hints of mineral and liquorice. It has a long finish, ripe and rich, with good acidity and mature tannins that feel big but silky.Alan ManleyThe 2021 Barolo is gorgeous. A pure Sangiovese that was aged for a few months in large oak barrels this wine is an exciting new project that cements and displays Iacopo’s understanding of the vineyards and is exciting now and for years to come.
