When I say “The New Wave” I don’t mean hipster. In many ways it’s a reference to the turning of cycles. Generations ago, technology like mechanical pruning, machine harvesters, chemical fertilisers, and techie wine making didn’t exist. Vineyards were cane pruned, hand picked and composted for nutrition, often by animals roaming through the vines. Wines where fermented by wild yeast and matured in vessels that were designed for storage not to impart oak.
Fast forward, and, today we see all of these techniques being applied by those pushing to realise the full potential of their vineyards, all be it, with the backing of science to help us understand what we’re doing. The results are consistently excellent.
?? 2016 Up the Mountain Pinot Noir – The backbone of this Pinot is a delicious fresh core of fruit. It’s wrapped in a beautiful perfume of flowers, spice, earthiness, savoury goodness. Texturally you can see the whole bunch tannin, it’s at just the right level. A little edgy, the quality of the tannins are superb. They complete the mouthfeel. Watching this wine evolve over the next few years will be fascinating!
?? 2015 Proud Syrah – The 2015 Syrah is inky dark in colour, lovely tannins, spice and a real vibrancy of fruit aroma and flavour. It’s a deceptive wine. It’s elegance and finesse somehow wrangles a core of fruit with great depth and length. I little magic I’ve seen in many of the great wines I’ve drunk from around the world.
Stuart grows the fruit that goes into the Wine Decoded Bathtub Shiraz. We did an article with him for the Wine Bites Mag earlier in the season, talking vineyards that worth a look!
Having the vineyard sorted really does make it so much easier in the winery. The more time you spend in vineyards, the easier it is to spot good ones. This one checks all the boxes.
Where in the world does the magic happen?
