The 45th Anniversary for La Rocca takes you to a happy place. The usual full beans style is again beautifully balanced, with flow. Wonderful perfume floral almonds marzipan excellent development and freshness. Ripe lemon the variety you could eat fresh mixed with tropical fruits. Delicious. fine superb shape and again plush créme patissier mouthfeel.

Both Cru’s appear more resolved than the last couple of years at this point in their maturity.

As always incorporating 10-20% botrytis adding complexity and a little spice.

A superb La Rocca!

Paul Kaan, Wine Decoded

Celebrating its milestone 45th anniversary (1978–2023), the Pieropan 2023 Soave Classico La Rocca shines with golden intensity and offers a compelling bouquet that draws from both the character of Garganega and from careful oak aging. This 100% Garganega is aged in 500-liter French and Slavonian oak for 15 months. Varietal tones include stone fruit, preserved lemon and crushed oyster shell. Oak nuances of nutmeg and saffron add framing and depth. La Rocca is a five-hectare site with limestone soils, and 45,000 bottles were made. The Pieropan family knows its stuff. Happy anniversary.

Why is this Wine so Yummy?

The single vineyard Soave wines, Calvarino and La Rocca, are polar opposites, yet they share a remarkable capacity to age gracefully. Calvarino, with 30% Trebbiano, is oak-free with pure fruit that is tight and minerally. La Rocca, from the vineyard that overlooks the town itself, is late harvested and aged in large cask, displaying ripe tropical fruit with an intense, layered palate that is velvety and persistent.

The vineyard ‘La Rocca’ is situated on the Monte Rocchetta hill, just below the mediaeval castle built by the Scaligeri family in the town of Soave. The microclimate in this vineyard produces wines with a unique perfume and distinctive taste. The grapes are picked when very ripe, often as late as the end of October, giving tremendous complexity and aromatic qualities to the wine, making it a wine of great breeding. The wine was first made under this label in 1978.

Grape varieties: 100% Garganega

During this period, the wine remains on the fine lees where is acquires complexity and a rich bouquet. It is held in bottle for some time before release.

Oganoleptic properties: perfume: tasting notes: total acidity: alcoholic content: brilliant and intense yellow whit golden hints; characterful wine, reminiscent of exotic fruit and nuts on the nose; soft and persistent on the palate, with hints of spice, length and elegance.

About Pieropan

Leonildo (Nino) Pieropan showed the world just how great Garganega can be. Nino recognised the importance of terroir early on, expanding the family’s hillside vineyards and creating his single vineyard wines, Calvarino in 1971 and La Rocca in 1978. Today, sons Andrea (viticulturist) and Dario (winemaker), maintain the family’s profound commitment to the terroir and tradition of Soave and, more recently, Valpolicella.

The organic Pieropan 2021 Soave Classico La Rocca shows a golden hue with hints of shiny emerald and green. Made with 100% Garganega, it ages in tonneaux for 12 months. The wine is viscous in appearance, gliding within the inside of the glass with thick, slow swirls. The effect is beautiful and full-bodied for sure, with apricot, poached pear, crushed stone and very light saffron or cinnamon. This is just a terrific vintage from a world-class producer.
