Description

Grace under pressure! Castiglione Falletto shining through with those faded flower. Excellent long tannins of substance and sophistication. A beguiling core of fruit, brooding, yet, you can see what is to come. Flow and shape. It feels very complete. Fine and long. It has that intrigue that steps it up another notch. Very good. Earthy and truffled, serious stuff. Persistence has you taking note as it dances along.

Rocche di Castiglione and Villero in Castiglione Falletto consistently sit amongst my favourite wines from Barolo across producers and vintages!

Nicoletta and Claudio married in 1994. With their nuptules a parcel of Villero from Nicolletta (nee Vietti) transferred to the Fenocchio estate with 1995 the 1st vintage under Fenocchio. Less sand and more very compact clay here. A very hot site and the first vineyard to harvest. The soils moisture holding capacity and soil volume keep the vines hydrated through the season. The vineyard is now over 70 years old as of 2025. A significant portion is planted to the perfumed Nebbiolo Rose clone.  The 2021 Giacomo Fenocchio Villero has a wonderful deceptive length and depth of fruit. Why deceptive, the elegance here almost masks the profound depth and length of fruit. The dried flowers of dried roses, are there. Exceptional length and layering of tannin. 7,000

Tasting the 2020 Villero alongside was a fascinating experience. Delicious straight out of the gate. A beautiful expression with exceptional shape and flow on the palate. Showing a delicate touch. A delicious. Lovely generosity, very complex, faded flowers, showing its class and the stamp of the Cru.

Paul Kaan, WINE DECODED July 2025

The 2021 Barolo Villero is laced with spice, leather, herbs, menthol and licorice. It exudes depth, structure and classicism, with signature balsamic inflections and virile intensity. A superb showing.

Why is this Wine so Yummy?

  • From one-hectare of 65 year old vines in the cru of Villero
  • 300 meters elevation
  • Iron-rich calcareous clay soils
  • Spontaneous fermentation and skin maceration over 40 days
  • Aged 36 months in large Slavonian oak casks prior to bottling
  • 500 cases produced annually.

Claudio Fenocchio’s 2021 Barolos represent another important step forward for this family-owned domaine. The wines continue to gain in nuance, finesse and transparency, which is always great to see. Bottling a bit earlier than in the past is another choice that is paying off handsomely. Quite simply, the 2021s are some of the very finest Barolos I have tasted here.

About Giacomo Fenocchio

Claudio Fenocchio’s estate is comprised of prized vineyards (14 hectares in total) spanning across Cannubi in Barolo, Villero in Castiglione Falletto, and Bussia in Monforte d’Alba, where his cantina rests at the crest of the hill.

In April of 1989, Claudio’s father, Giacomo passed away, leaving him to take over all farming and winemaking duties for the estate. These were challenging times for Barolo, Claudio explains. When many producers were pushing innovative ways to make Barolo, and having great commercial success, Claudio never strayed from the path of tradition. Just like the four generations that preceded him (the estate was founded in 1864), Claudio continued producing his wines with the time-honoured techniques of the classic style: organic farming, with long fermentations on the skins and aging only in large Slavonian oak casks.

In the Vineyard

“We consider our farm an organic business although we have not been certified yet; we are participating, however, to the European project that encourages sustainable farming and we follow agricultural practices passed on for generations.

We will combine the newly purchased vineyards with those from our family heritage to craft a quality wine that best represents its territory of origin, which we aim to protect in any possible way.

What has given consistency and shaped our family farming business for generations is the respect for the work of our forefathers and the willingness to continue this tradition.”
