Nebbiolo from Piedmont, Monforte d'Alba, Italy, Bussia, Barolo
$202
Bussia is huge MGA. Giacomo Fenocchio’s parcel comes from a peninsular at the top of the Commune sitting between Barolo & Castiglione Falletto. It’s large enough to be split into 5-6 different fermentations. All very different from each other in personality. Fenocchio’s beautiful Bussia a demonstration of the massive differences in style across Monforte. Often very structured, demanding patiences, Claudio’s sites and wine making offer an elegant wine. It has some a degree of immediate generosity in the early stage of its youth. Time will undoubtedly see it relax building generosity. Wonderful fruit with the hallmark of Fenocchio’s wines sophistication, delicacy, very long tannins. Wait at least 3 years, preferably 5. A little more masculine, as the wine matures the fruit will pull back a little as secondary characters and quality balsamic characters build. All of the Fenocchio wines show great complexity in the Bussia sits comfortably with that description.

Claudio Fenocchio’s 2021 Barolos represent another important step forward for this family-owned domaine. The wines continue to gain in nuance, finesse and transparency, which is always great to see. Bottling a bit earlier than in the past is another choice that is paying off handsomely. Quite simply, the 2021s are some of the very finest Barolos I have tasted here.

Claudio Fenocchio’s estate is comprised of prized vineyards (14 hectares in total) spanning across Cannubi in Barolo, Villero in Castiglione Falletto, and Bussia in Monforte d’Alba, where his cantina rests at the crest of the hill.
In April of 1989, Claudio’s father, Giacomo passed away, leaving him to take over all farming and winemaking duties for the estate. These were challenging times for Barolo, Claudio explains. When many producers were pushing innovative ways to make Barolo, and having great commercial success, Claudio never strayed from the path of tradition. Just like the four generations that preceded him (the estate was founded in 1864), Claudio continued producing his wines with the time-honoured techniques of the classic style: organic farming, with long fermentations on the skins and aging only in large Slavonian oak casks.
“We consider our farm an organic business although we have not been certified yet; we are participating, however, to the European project that encourages sustainable farming and we follow agricultural practices passed on for generations.
We will combine the newly purchased vineyards with those from our family heritage to craft a quality wine that best represents its territory of origin, which we aim to protect in any possible way.
What has given consistency and shaped our family farming business for generations is the respect for the work of our forefathers and the willingness to continue this tradition.”
