In the Champagne World, Krug and Egly-Ouriet, rate as two of the biggest names. At this level, we move beyond simply quality measurement to stylistic preference, beauty is in the eye of the beholder! These are both very good wines. I’d love to hear your thoughts!

Somehow Francis Egly finds a way to tame incredible intensity of aroma & flavour from the exceptional Pinot fruit that finds it’s way into this wine!
This wine truly takes me to a happy place. The ability to combine richness with precision, an incredible texture, and, a level of complexity that makes it almost impossible to describe this wine are all of the hallmarks of greatness.
Tasted next to Krug NV, a very good bottle at that, the Egly was inspirational. The élévage of this wine is simply perfect. Taking the time to mature base wines before blending and bottling makes an incredible difference to fruit of this quality, adding 70 months on lees has brought this wine together beautifully. Whilst Krug is a blend of 100’s of parcels and often has an oxidative note about it. Egly is vibrant, and, fresh, yet beautifully matured. The high notes that you sometimes miss with blending are all there. Truly a special wine.
Listed as NV it is blended across two synergistic years.
Affectionately called K-r-ah-g by many! One of Champagne’s Standard Bearer’s. Such a complex and layered wine.
Krug’s Grande Cuvée is, for many, myself included, their best wine & best value wine. Using old oak to ferment and age base wines, long periods on lees, blending across a dozen different years and well over 100 wines. It’s rich developed style that everyone should try at least once! Fascinatingly they grow just 35% of their fruit buying the rest from as far away as the Côte de Bar and Les Riceys. Areas not typically associated with prestige Cuvées, although that is slowly changing.
Hot tip for all ‘good’ Champagne, don’t drink it too cold. 10-14ºC from a decent sized glass not a flute will be give loads more pleasure!
I had one that had been aged in bottle for a further 10 years after release just a week ago. It was superb and a testament to the quality of fruit from which it is made. Exceptional depth and length of fruit, such complexity, and, freshness.
Where in the world does the magic happen?
