Description

“The 2021 Clos du Marquis is a lovely wine, offering up aromas of cherries, burning embers, dark berries, loamy soil and truffle, followed by a medium to full-bodied, layered and velvety wine that’s rather deep and serious, reflecting low yields of 30 hectoliters per hectare and a blend dominated by 67% Cabernet Sauvignon, with 19% Merlot and 14% Cabernet Franc in supporting roles. Lest anyone underestimate it on the strength of the challenging vintage alone, by the numbers it contains a higher concentration of polyphenols than either the 2019 or 2020 vintages. Tasted three times.”

This vintage was marked in the vineyard by an early start, a late finish and sudden increases in power requiring the reactivity of the teams at every stage and in every aspect of the vineyard’s support. Despite these perilous climatic conditions, the final ripening was complete and homogeneous. The great early and unique terroir of Léoville Las Cases produced great Cabernets, deep and elegant, complex and straightforward, as well as smooth and aerial Merlots. A noble, fresh and rich Grand Vin de Léoville Las Cases with a beautiful aromatic complexity, signing this vintage with an extreme elegance.

About Clos du Marquis

The name of this wine, created at the beginning of the 20th century when the vineyard was planted, was inspired by the Petit Clos adjacent to the Château de Léoville, residence of the Marquis de Las Cases.
Clos du Marquis is a historical brand by the Domaines Delon, at the very origin a separate vineyard to Leoville Las Cases whose first vintage was released in 1902.

The creation of this brand allowed to produce a wine enjoying the best of these distinct terroirs. The situation remains unchanged today as the vineyard producing the Clos du Marquis is located on top terroirs of the Saint Julien appellation, the main part being surrounded by such prestigious Classified Growths as Léoville Poyferré and Léoville Barton.

In the Vineyard

AOC: Saint-Julien

Surface area: 55 ha

Average age of vines: 52 years

Grape varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon 61% / Merlot 21% / Cabernet Franc 16%

Density of plantation: 8 600 plants/ha

The Clos encases a terroir of very great complexity. It is mainly composed of Quaternary gravel (“graves”) over gravelly sand and gravelly clay subsoils. We also find clays which are variably deep and compact, but which sometimes break through to the surface. The proximity of the Gironde River has created the wide diversity of soils, formed over various geological periods by successive superimpositions.

The river also creates a special microclimate that enables very early ripening of the grapes and protects the vineyards from frost. This cameo of geological combinations influences the growth of the vine and the composition of the grapes: regular but restricted water supply and a very low intake of nutrients bring out the best in the great Cabernet Sauvignons and Cabernet Francs which usually achieve their full potential whatever the vintage. The incomparable terroir gives this great wine its unique personality.

"The 2021 Clos du Marquis is a dark, sumputous Saint-Julien. Stron Cabernet inflections give the Clos du Marquis its strong aromatic presence. Crushed flowers, spice, mint, tobacco and incense all reveal themselves with some coaxing. There are some slight rough edges in the tannins, but hopefully élévage can polish those. The 2021 is a fine and promising Clos du Marquis.
