Description

The first wine I tried from the Cigliano di Sopra was the 2021 Classico. It’s a bloody tasty expression of Sangiovese. It shows a hell of a lot of comfort and clarity of thought in their winemaking from this young duo. They are at the forefront of a new wave like Carleone pushing hard to drive Chianti to new height. Think harmony, balance, grape first, fun wine.

The Riserva is looking very sharp. All of the hallmarks of the Classico levelled up. Old school Chianti Classico Riservas are often over-developed, a little oxidative in style, sometimes with a riper twist.

Cigliano di Sopra’s is anything but, it’s fresh, sophisticated, elegant, a delight. A clear jump in everything depth, length, layering of tannin, it’s incredibly vibrant and energetic. It will build wonderfully in bottle with more time. Super juicy acid and red fruits line up with beautifully weighted tannins. The harmony is excellent. Earthy, violets, a little slate and pencil shavings. A cleansing sappy line of bitterness. This is an absolute ripper and demonstration of the evolution that is occurring in Chianti at the moment. Lovely.

Also very beautiful, the Cigliano di Sopra 2021 Chianti Classico Riserva Vigneto Branca comes in at a higher price point compared to the excellent “annata” wine, but the quality is as impressive here. The main difference between the two wines is aging potential, and of course this wine is poised for the longer cellar life of the two thanks to its extra textural tightness and structure. The Vigna Branca was planted in 1972, and you get old-vine fruit with the added complexity that comes with advanced plant age. However, the bouquet is very similar in terms of freshness and transparency. It offers lively notes of wild berry, rose, blood orange and crushed stone. This Riserva is a shade darker in appearance. Production is 2,050 bottles, 49 magnums and six double magnums. This is the first vintage that this wine is designated as a Chianti Classico Riserva. It was an IGT Toscana wine before this year.

About Cigliano di Sopra

Fattoria Cigliano di Sopra is an historic complex surrounded by 32 hectares of land extending over the hills of Chianti Classico, in the San Casciano area of Val di Pena.

The Cigliano di Sopra estate is situated in the highest part of the Cigliano area and comprises the historic Cigliano Villa, with its centuries-old park, Italian gardens and collection of citrus trees, and three farmhouses, two of which – Casa delle Fiabe and Casa Bulleri – have been converted into agriturismo holiday cottages. Finally, there is the Church of San Zanobi in Casciano, where the owners were married and their children baptised.

The estate’s 32 hectares include eight hectares under vine, from which we get the grapes for our winery, and 17 hectares of olive trees, from which we make our own extra virgin olive oil. The remaining seven hectares are parkland and woods. The historic Cigliano Villa, at the centre of the complex, is home to the owners who maintain and preserve this long-established estate.

I feel like a new benchmark for fine wine is being set by Maddalena Fucile and Matteo Vaccari of Cigliano di Sopra in San Casciano Val di Pesa. These young winemaking colleagues studied enology together in Florence and both worked with Sashi Moorman and Rajat Parr at Domaine de la Côte in California and at other prestigious wine estates in Italy. Winemaking is hands-on and artisanal in the stone underground cellar of Maddalena’s family Tuscan villa. Farming is organic and biodynamic, and I want to underline the sheer excitement I feel for these wines and this promising up-and-coming estate.

Matteo Vaccari and Maddalena Fucile may be young, but their winemaking expertise surpasses those well beyond their years. After graduating with a degrees in Viticulture and Oenology from the University of Florence in 2017, the duo honed their winemaking crafts locally at Tuscany’s Tenuta degli Dei and Fontodi (Matteo) and Isole e Olena (Maddalena). After conquering Italy, the pair knew it was time to set their sites abroad.

Both Matteo and Maddalena worked alongside two of California’s top winemakers, Sashi Moorman and Rajat Parr, at their California and Oregon-based estates Domaine de la Cote, Sandhi, Pence Ranch, and Evening Land (Eola-Amity Hills, Oregon). Maddalena ultimately returned home to her family’s fattoria, Cigliano di Sopra, and brought a breath of fresh air to the nearly abandoned estate. She restored old vineyards around the property through organic and biodynamic farming, and upon Matteo’s arrival, the duo’s shared passion for honest viticulture and minimalist winemaking pushed the estate’s production to a whole new level of excellence.

In the Vineyard

Sandy-clay soils rich in limestone dominate the vineyards, all of which are organically farmed with biodynamic principles.

In the Winery

Fruit for this Chianti Classico is hand-harvested and hand-sorted to ensure that only the best berries make the cut. Matteo and Maddalena use a light hand in the cellar to allow the terroir to speak for itself.

“[Our motto is] be delicate and let the wine express its own character,”

Matteo Vaccari

Spontaneously fermented in steel tanks. Long pump-overs were executed twice per day during the first half of fermentation, then gradually reduced throughout its duration (approx. 25 days)
Aged for 14 months in large French oak barrels with light racking followed by one month in steel tanks prior to bottling
