Château Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande 2021

Bordeaux Blend from Pauillac, Medoc, Bordeaux

$400

Closure: Cork

Description

Pichon-Lalande has always been a favourite of mine from Paulliac. Although classified as a 2nd Growth, it has the moniker of being a Super Second. The unofficial classification has been given to a number of wines that consistently are at the top of their game, and, are worthy of elevation to a higher class! Makes sense, they’re vineyards are adjacent to those of Latour.

“This estate is one of the most dynamic in contemporary Bordeaux, so it’s no surprise that the 2021 Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande is a terrific wine—though its a very atypical blend of 88% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Cabernet Franc and 2% Merlot, cropped at a derisory 15 hectoliters per hectare, hints at what a challenging year this was in the vineyards. Unwinding in the glass with aromas of wild berries, blackcurrants, iris, licorice, black truffles, cigar wrapper and sweet soil tones, it’s medium to full-bodied, layered and textural, with beautifully refined tannins, lively acids and a supple but serious profile. It will see 60% new oak and, in all likelihood, a classical élevage of fully 18 months.”

About Pichon-Lalande

Double exposed film showing the vineyards of Latour from the terrace of Pichon-Lalande with me in tank farm in Moldova in the background. You can just see the Gironde River in the distance.

This picture was taken shortly before we went through a door to the 2nd year Chai where the wine matures in barrel (pictured below). Moments later, we were promptly thrown out of the area by a security guard! My French has improved a little since then.

Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande has 102 hectares of vines in Pauillac, in the heart of the Médoc, ideally situated along the Gironde Estuary.

In three centuries, only two families have contributed to the worldwide reputation of the château and its wines.

The third family, owners of Champagne Louis Roederer, acquired the estate in January 2007. They aim to perpetuate the excellent work done by their predecessors and to attain the ultimate in quality and prestige.

Relying on the best of traditional and modern methods, Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande built new winemaking facilities in 2013.

The wines epitomise the remarkable balance of Pauillac, with a silky tannic structure along with an expressive and suave aromatic complexity.
