Côte-de-Nuits

Nuits-Saint-Georges

Nuits-Saint-Georges is the home of some stunnig reds in the Côte de Nuits.

Although it rests on the southern border of Vosne-Romanée home to a set of incredible Grand Cru vineyards, Nuits-Saint-Georges has no Grand Cru’s of its own. Many would argue that one or two of the Premier Cru vineyards are worthy of an upgrade.

It’s uncanny how many times I’ve had a village Nuits from a good producer with 10-15 years of bottle age and remarked on both the quality and beauty of the wine.

Nuits produces virtually 100% Pinot Noir. There are a couple of sneaky whites, literally, made in Nuits. Henri Gouges makes a Pinot ‘Gouges’, a Blanc mutation of Pinot Noir, and a couple of Chardonnay’s from Domaine de l’Arlot.

The wines of Nuits like any village varying significantly. The sites toward the south tend to be more masculine. The sites to the north closer to Vosne-Romanée tend to be more feminine. They can offer incredible complexity and vitality.

‘(from La Charmotte, Aux Saints-Juliens and Les Plateaux). A pungent nose is comprised at present by notes of reduction and wood toast. Pinot Noir | Nuits-Saint-Georges, France

"A relatively airy and cool nose freely offers up notes of various red berries, earth and a floral top note. The sleek and relatively refined middle weight flavors contrast somewhat with the youthfully austere and mildly rustic finale that exhibits slightly better depth and persistence on the more structured finale. This is quite a good Nuits villages and worth a look. ♥"Allen Meadows, Burghound

"Aromatically this too is markedly floral in character with its discreetly spiced nose of high-toned red currant, pomegranate and soft earth influence. There is both good vibrancy and detail to the round and seductively textured medium-bodied flavors that possess fine length on the balanced finish if not quite the same lovely complexity. This mildly austere effort should age well over the medium to even longer-term. Drink 2030+."Allen Meadows, Burghound

"A more elegant, cooler and spicier nose reflects notes of the pretty essence of red currant, rose petal and a floral top note. The elegance continues on the palate of the nicely textured and quite punchy flavors that exude evident minerality on the sneaky long and moderately structured finish. As is usually the case, this is a Nuits 1er of refinement and even a certain finesse." Drink 2030+ Outstanding ♥Allen Meadows, Burghound 91-93 Points

It hard to talk about Nuits-Saint-Georges without talking about Henri Gouges. For near a century the Domaine has quietly been working away to expand their holding and continually improve their wines."A more deeply pitched and brooding nose only grudgingly reveals its aromas of cassis plum liqueur and pungent earth where the latter is also found on the vibrant and well-detailed big-bodied and tautly muscular flavors that deliver excellent depth and persistence. A more complex nose features notes of citrus confit, green apple and a floral top note along with just enough wood to notice. There is excellent concentration to the sappy and very rich yet focused medium weight flavors that possess a plush mouthfeel, all wrapped in a chalky, youthfully austere and lightly stony finale where a touch of warmth slowly emerges. This well-made effort should repay 2 to 3 years of keeping. 2026+Allen Meadows, Burghound 89 PointsNote: from white pinot noir, w

Boillot has always done a remarkable job with this vineyard and 2016 will only add to that track record. There is gorgeous complexity to the fresh and notably ripe red berry fruit, humus and pungent earth scented nose. The succulent, dense and powerful broad-shouldered flavors brim with copious dry extract that mostly manages to buffer the very firm tannic spine on the superbly long finish that flashes just a trace of Nuits style rusticity. This very serious and built-to-age effort is breathtaki

“Dense dark purple. Powerful plums, a graphite note as well, significant density, the fruit swells right across the palate, a huge volume but the ripeness is perfectly judged, with an excellent length. This is very impressive. Reveling in the warmer vintage because the tannins are riper.” Jasper Morris

“There is a lovely depth of color here, and the perfume is enticing with its boysenberry fruit and chalky minerality. The palate has a lovely depth of ripeness, precise and fine tannins and elegant, refreshing length. This is one of the prettiest Clos des Fôrets St-Georges I have ever tasted.” Christine Canterbury MW, Tim Atkin MW Burgundy Special Report 94 Points“Dense red to crimson. One of the most profound Clos des Forêts I've had from Arlot! Great core of dark fruit. Lovely tannins 100% destemmed after starting in 2021 with destemming. Very complete wine. Showing great touch. That lovely balance that sees it in a style between Gevrey and Vosne-Romanée. Plush, fine & super long. Perfumed with roses and delicate spice. Soft fine. Immediate approachability yet this will clearly offer so much more with time in bottle. Give this 7 years and you’ll be happy give it 15 a

As is the case with the Chênes Carteaux, there is a high-toned note of herbal present on the poached plum and sauvage-suffused aromas. I very much like the texture of the tautly muscular yet relatively fine middleweight flavors that exude a bead of minerality on the balanced, youthfully austere and impressively long finale. This is excellent. (from a 1.08 ha mix of younger and older vines that average about 50+ years of age) 2032+ ♥ OutstandingAllen Meadows, Burghound (91-94) Points

There is enough reduction to suppress the underlying fruit though there is by contrast very good freshness and tension to the sleek, detailed and tautly muscular flavors that also conclude in a decidedly austere, compact and mildly warm finish. This powerful and vaguely rustic effort will also require ample patience to arrive at its full maturity.. Drink: 2036+ Outstanding ♥Allen Meadows, Burghound 91-93 NM 93-95

This is spicier still with its broad-ranging nose of red and dark pinot fruit, violet and herbal tea, all of which is trimmed by soft wood influence. There is a bit more minerality present on the vibrant and lavishly rich medium weight flavors that possess excellent power that carries over to the firm and tautly muscular finish that is balanced and long plus it’s less austere than usual.
