Many of Barolo's greats would argue that you should judge a maker on their Dolcetto before their Nebbiolo! Giacosa does Dolcetto justice. The missing links for Dolcetto are typically sorting reduction and developing the wine sufficiently. Giacosa jumps those hurdles with ease and breezes past the finish line with quality fruit & considered handling to offer us a wine with a refined mouthfeel. Savoury, vibrant, dark, with an excellent core of fruit thirst-quenching and delicious. Straight

Francesco Versio Langhe Nebbiolo 2020

Nebbiolo | Neive, Italy

The 'Side Project' of ex-Bruno Giacosa's winemaker Francesco Versio ... His 1st Langhe Neb Release! There is no mistaking the quality here. It all makes sense when you discover the fruit is destined to make Barbaresco, sourced from the 50:50 Starderi and Currà cru. Seriously good P.1.S.S. Call it a cheap Barbaresco instead of a Langhe Neb. Perfume and energy with divine mouthfeel. Juicy, thirst quenching and still with plenty more to come!

Francesco Versio Langhe Nebbiolo 2021

Nebbiolo | Piedmont, Barbaresco

The 'Side Project' of ex-Bruno Giacosa's winemaker Francesco Versio! Baby Barbaresco anyone? Simply delicious. Shows exceptional touch. Fresh, energetic with a delicacy matched to an intoxicating perfume underpinned by vibrant red fruits, complexing earthing, licorice, sour cherry and a little woody herb. Perfectly balanced this is stunning and ridiculous for the coin. The Francesco Versio 2021 Langhe Nebbiolo shows terrific balance (and great value) with plenty of wild berry fruit and fr

One of Italy’s great value red wines, the Barbera d’Alba ‘Casa Vinicola’ is an expression of Barbera fruit sourced from around the Barolo and Barbaresco sub-regions. This is one of the longest standing labels in Giacosa’s stable having first been produced in 1969, just after the first Barolos and Barbarescos of the mid-60’s. These days it is a refreshing red that shows the ripe red berries of great Barberas from Alba, alongside notably sinewy tannins and a good mineral core.

Barale Barbaresco ‘Serraboella’ 2016

Nebbiolo | Neive, Barbaresco

They understand the rule book so have thrown it away only to be used when they know they need to. I guess that's what 150 years of making wine can give you! There's a big difference between old school, never changed a thing, and, old school true to style, yet, with deep consideration of modern science. Looking at the film below you'd think Barale may be the former. Reading their website it is clear that they are the later. They understand the rule book so have thrown it away only to be used when

Bera Barbaresco ‘Serraboella’ 2019

Nebbiolo | Neive, Italy

Excellent drinking at this price point. Complete with well developed strawberries and cream with savoury, generous fruit. Playful and fun, solid depth and length. This is a big step up from the standard Barbaresco. The sophistication of mouthfeel, layering of tannins and flavours marking the difference. Serraboella turns out wines of interest from a number of producers including Barale, looking forward to seeing their 2019 too! This one is well worth a look.

Oddero Barbaresco ‘Gallina’ 2016

Nebbiolo | Piedmont, Barbaresco

After 3 days open this came into its own and really shone. The tannins have softened a little, harmonising with the fruit. The wine has resolved to reveal a balance, beauty and perfume that sat shy on first opening! Some serious quality here. Vibrant and energetic Slatey mineral chalky nature. Excellent mouth-coating tannins that are fine with great line and length. Juicy acid ramps up some juicy fruit. Excellent elevage.  The lasting note is fruit, red and fun. That little splash of perfume sp

Oddero Barbaresco ‘Gallina’ 2019

Nebbiolo | Neive, Italy

Oddero are doing such a wonderful job with this vineyard! Youthful and in need of a decant if you crack it young. Everything is there and in the right places. Energetic, vibrant red fruits, with a pleasant grip, hints of tar and an expressive perfume. Loads of fun to be had here. The best Barbaresco's from 2019 make for exhilarating drinking. Paul Kaan, WINE DECODED The 2019 Barbaresco Gallina is a very pretty, effusive wine. Crushed raspberry, flowers, mint and sweet pipe tobacco a

They understand the rule book so have thrown it away only to be used when they know they need to. I guess that's what 150 years of making wine can give you! The 2016 of this was a cracker. True to the vintage & site with bold yet refined structure. The 2019 is again a cracker and true to vintage. This time all grace and elegance from what is proving a classic year. Beautifully weighted, the body of this slightly warmer vineyard with the clarity and sophistication of 2019 Barbaresco. Rich

Barale Barbaresco ‘Serraboella’ 2020

Nebbiolo | Neive, Barbaresco

A bolder year than 2019 with thirst quenching fine acid and fresh fruit with an underlying richness. It’s the tannins here that shine. Not a lick of oak here. Epic quality long even with excellent fruit and tannin length. The flow through the range is just so impressive. Slatey with a little dark edge. Red dark cherry a little spice and orange zest. Here Barbaresco is on show with its incisive tannins with a clearly bolder version Serraboella on show. Delicious. ***Due 2nd Half August 202

Sottimano Barbaresco ‘Basarin’ 2019

Nebbiolo | Piedmont, Barbaresco

As with the 2016, Sottimano's 2019 Basarin is a cracker. Finely balanced with the juicy acid that sits across Sottimano's 2019's. There's more immediate generosity compared with the Fausoni at this early stage. Excellent depth and length with fine long tannins. As with the 2016 this has to be one of the best handling of a tiny proportion of new oak in Barbaresco that you'll find. The is great drinking with beautiful shape. The fruit again shining through with an intoxicating set of aromas and f

Sottimano Barbaresco ‘Fausoni’ 2019

Nebbiolo | Neive, Italy

The Cru's of the Commune of Nieve in Barbaresco in general have an elegance, a fine feel to them. Fausoni fits that bill. The 2019 is defined with an excellent acid tannin complex at 14% Alcohol. With a little air time and coaxing the perfume comes, the fruit builds and the balance refines. Full of energy and life, red fruits, slate, earthiness, a little tar, leather, orange citrus and beyond are at play. Fine, dusty tannins add a nice level of grip to match the depth and length of fruit. This w

Sottimano Barbaresco ‘Basarin’ 2016

Nebbiolo | Neive, Italy

Pair this up with the Currá and have a little Neb-Festa! Having two wines side by side from adjacent vineyards is always fun. Inevitably it's a demonstration in just how much varriation there is between vineyards with very short distances between them. They house style is evident. Basarin has a more elegant feel to it over the richer Currá, though it is still has a bit of weight to it. Normally, I am not an advocate of new oak in Barolo or Barbaresco. Here there is just a lick here from 10% ne

Francesco Versio Barbaresco 2019

Nebbiolo | Neive, Barbaresco

The 'Side Project' of ex-Bruno Giacosa's winemaker Francesco Versio this is a stunner! The Francesco Versio 2019 Barbaresco is delicate and fine, almost fragile, with iris root, rusty nail, cassis and licorice root. The wine is carefully balanced to show the intensity of the grape, yet its aromatic profile is carefully measured and contained overall. This is an exciting wine with impeccable winemaking. Olek Bondonio Barbaresco ‘Starderi’ 2020

Nebbiolo | Piedmont, Barbaresco

Olek has incredible touch. The man understands textures and tannins, creates wines with insane perfumes and layer after layer of diving flavours. I can't wait to hook one of these when it hits the warehouse! Starderi is in the center north in the commune of Nieve. Check it out in the map below.
