Côte-de-Nuits

Gevrey-Chambertin

Gevrey-Chambertin lies 15km south of Dijon in the Côte de Nuits. The region takes its name from the village, Gevrey, and the appellation’s most prestigious vineyard, Le Chambertin. This village-vineyard naming convention is commonplace today, however, Gevrey-Chambertin set the trend, officially linking the two in 1847.

Covering approximately 550 hectares, it is one of the largest appellations in the Côte d’Or and certainly the largest appellations for reds; Pinot Noir is the only variety planted in Gevrey-Chambertin. Due to its size, the sub-region has a variety of terroirs – from gravels in the Vau de Combe to rich clay-soils on the northern côte – and produces a diversity of styles. Traditional viticultral and winemaking predominate, however, there has been growing trend towards more organic practices over the past two decades.

Gevrey-Chambertin has earned a reputation for producing Pinot Noirs with rich fruit and structured tannins. The best expressions see this intensity tempered with elegance, yielding concentrated wines with complexity and finesse.

The 2022 Ruchottes-Chambertin Clos des Ruchottes Grand Cru is one of my favorite aromatics from Rousseau, one you instantly fall in love with - real frisson, red berry fruit laced with shucked oyster shell. The palate is very well-balanced, framed by filigree tannins. There is real tension from start to finish, as you expect from this vineyard, finishing with immense precision. Fabulous wine.Neal Martin, Vinous 96-98 Points Tasted Nov 2023 Drink 2028-2065An exuberantly spicy nose ref
The 2023 Ruchottes-Chambertin Clos des Ruchottes Grand Cru has a spellbinding bouquet with pure red fruit, hints of blueberry and incense. There is real mineralité here. The palate is medium-bodied with saturated tannins, sublime poise and energy from beginning to end, and just a hint of white pepper toward the finish. This will rank alongside the 2022.Neal Martin, Vinous 96-98 Points Tasted Nov 2023 Drink 2028-2060An exuberantly spicy nose reflects notes of distinctly cool red cur

Arnaud Mortet ‘Mazoyères-Chambertin’ Grand Cru 2023

Pinot Noir | Gevrey-Chambertin, Burgundy

Riper aromas of various dark berries, violet, forest floor and a whiff of the sauvage possess a vaguely liqueur-like quality to them. The surprisingly supple and wonderfully vibrant bigger-bodied flavors possess an appealing vibrancy that carries over to the youthfully austere finish that is shaped by both moderately firm but fine tannins and bright acidity. Note that at least some patience will be necessary.Allen Meadows, Burghound 92-95 Points"The 2023 Mazoyères-Chambertin Grand C

Domaine Faiveley ‘Mazis Chambertin’ Grand Cru MAGNUM 2022

Mazi is alway a favourite. Hugely long yet impeccably well-balanced! Toasty reduction knocks down the nose but there is fine freshness and richness to the suave and seductively textured bigger-bodied flavors that are generously proportioned while displaying both good tension and complexity on the impressively persistent and more powerful, if less refined, finish where a hint of wood appears. This isn’t quite as mineral-driven but save for a subtle touch of warmth, it’s beautifully balanced a

Arnaud Mortet ‘Mazoyères-Chambertin’ Grand Cru 2022

Pinot Noir | Gevrey-Chambertin, Burgundy

A restrained and ultra-fresh nose speaks of cherry, plum, red currant, earth and subtle sauvage nuances. The medium-bodied flavors possess a caressing mouthfeel though there is evident minerality along with a touch of youthful austerity on the punchy, powerful and decidedly serious finale.Allen Meadows, Burghound 92-95 Points“It has a much more floral bouquet than the Charmes-Chambertin, with veins of blue fruit running through the red cherries and crushed strawberries. Arnaud Mortet ‘Charmes-Chambertin’ Grand Cru 2022

Pinot Noir | Gevrey-Chambertin, Burgundy

A markedly floral-suffused nose speaks mostly of rose petal, violet and lavender nuances to the red cherry and earth scents. The generously proportioned yet surprisingly precise medium weight flavors possess both good richness and a seductive mouthfeel, all wrapped in a balanced, sneaky long and youthfully austere finale. This is lovely though note well that it's very much built to repay extended keeping.Allen Meadows, Burghound 92-95 PointsThe 2022 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru conta

Domaine Trapet Père et Fils Chambertin Grand Cru 2019

Pinot Noir | Gevrey-Chambertin, Burgundy

"Trapet's 2019 Chambertin Grand Cru is a profound wine in the making, and it can keeps company with vintage's finest. Wafting from the glass with deep aromas of cherries and cassis, complemented by notions of raw cocoa, blood orange, smoked meats, rich soil tones and spices, it's full-bodied, multidimensional and complete, with a weightless, elegant profile despite its prodigious concentration, its structuring tannins entirely concealed in an ample core of lively, vibrant fruit."William Kell

Domaine Trapet Père et Fils Chambertin Grand Cru 2022

Pinot Noir | Gevrey-Chambertin, Burgundy

The 2022 Chambertin Grand Cru is another terrific wine from Trapet, unfurling in the glass with deep aromas of plums, cherries and sweet berries mingled with hints of warm spices, rose petals and coniferous forest floor. Full-bodied, ample and satiny, it's seamless and complete, with a layered core of fruit framed by sweet, powdery tannins. It's as impressive for its harmony as it is for its plenitude.William Kelley, The Wine Advocate 95-97JM 96-98Note: from 3 different parce

Along with the 2015, I devoured a brace of 2016's from across the appellations. They are really stepping up their game, the investments in the vineyard and winery are a testament to this. Arnaud Mortet Chambertin ‘Clos-de-Bèze’ Grand Cru 2022

Pinot Noir | Gevrey-Chambertin, Burgundy

The 2022 Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze Grand Cru is the maiden vintage, the only cuvée Mortet does not farm himself, though he assured that he buys top quality grapes from the grower who owns a large part of the Grand Cru. It has a refined bouquet with pure redcurrant and wild strawberry fruit, wonderful mineralité, crushed stone and oyster shell. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly chewy tannins on the entry. It has fine depth but perhaps not quite the complexity of some of the other cuvées

Domaine Armand Rousseau Grand Cru ‘Chambertin’ 2023

The 2023 Chambertin Grand Cru has an exquisite, graceful bouquet with pure black cherries, raspberry and violet scents that soar from the glass. It shows exceptional delineation and focus.
