Recioto is the ancestor of the Amarone and the most ancient wine of the Valpolicella Appellation. It is produced, like Amarone, through the grapes drying in the so-called “fruttaio”. Once the grapes have lost at least half of their weight, and with the evaporation of the water, the desired concentration of sugars is achieved, so that the vinification can take place. The fermentation is stopped to preserve this wine’s typical structure and sweetness. So, it is the only sweet wine produced in Valpolicella, but thanks to its good acidity it’s never cloying.

The palate is fine-boned with pure red fruit, structured and slightly disjointed initially. Yet it coheres magnificently in the glass, so smooth. I was shocked when the vintage was revealed because this bo
Moderate reduction dominates the nose at present. There is both better complexity and mid-palate density to the still supple and delicious medium-bodied flavors that conclude in a more powerful and noticeably more structured finale. This has fine development potential and is a wine that will need at least some patience. Drink: 2030+Allen Meadows, Burghound 89-91 Points

As expected this is delicious, and that little bit more giving over the 2016. I’d go so far as to say it’s drinking well now, again like all of the wines of the estate I’ve tried, a little extra time will be its friend. While I say it is drinking well now, I mean as a young Burgundy, the metamorphisis that occurs with great Burgundy always requires time. It’ll be smack bang in the drinking window well before the 2016. This is a case of celebrating the difference not necessarily choosing

Giovanni Sordo Barolo 'Rocche di Castiglione' 2016
The Super Stars!
Again a controlled, blockbuster, with layers of dried and fading flowers, tobacco, cranberry and cherry liqueur. Huge, almost sweet palate. Long, but tight and relatively unevolved still, of course. Will be superb again. Such a complete wine yet tightly coiled and the moment, everything in it’s place and place for everything. Incredible tannin profile this year. Such lovely ripe nutty tannins of serious depth. The core of fruit is exceptional and long. Mouth filling, I so want to see a bottle
