Recioto

Recioto is the ancestor of the Amarone and the most ancient wine of the Valpolicella Appellation.

« Back to Wine Words Index

Recioto is the ancestor of the Amarone and the most ancient wine of the Valpolicella Appellation. It is produced, like Amarone, through the grapes drying in the so-called “fruttaio”. Once the grapes have lost at least half of their weight, and with the evaporation of the water, the desired concentration of sugars is achieved, so that the vinification can take place. The fermentation is stopped to preserve this wine’s typical structure and sweetness. So, it is the only sweet wine produced in Valpolicella, but thanks to its good acidity it’s never cloying.

Feeling Thirsty?

Taut and complex, apricot stone, crisp pear, lemon – yet ultimately more savoury spice than ripe fruit. Lifting ethereal elements of pine needles, nutmeg and white pepper. Defined shoulders and tensile power, with a shockingly fine and elegant grip. Cool and considered on the long, lingering finish. Don't let the outer calm fool you, this is not a Riesling to be trifled with. Nor to be touched for another few years.” JancisRobinson.com 18+ Points“The 2021 Kiedrich Gräfenberg

Pereira D'Oliveiras 5 Year Old Tinta Negra Sweet (20% Malvazia)
Sweet - 100+g/l
A very elegant nose with a touch of rancio volatility that sings against a rich backdrop of toffee, prunes and a prickle of baking spice and sweet liquorice. Weighty but wonderfully fresh on the palate with sweet dried fruit, warming spice and a touch of something savoury, charry, almost medicinal. This wine walks the tightrope of richness and finesse beautifully.

Wagner-Stempel Riesling Heerkretz 2017

Riesling | Rheinhessen, Germany

White peach, apple and lime are accented by their pits and pits as well as by raw almond on an enticing nose highly reminiscent of that exhibited by the corresponding 2016. Scents of Ceylon tea and spring beauty (Claytonia) add inner-mouth allure. The feel is flatteringly silken, notwithstanding the persistence of stimulating piquancy. Infectious juiciness, along with an invigoratingly tactile, active sense of crystalline stony impingement, dramatically sets this wine’s vibrant, bell-clear fin

Giacomo Conterno Barbera d’Alba ‘Francia’ 2020

Barbera | Serralunga d'Alba, Barolo

The 2020 Barbera d'Alba Vigna Francia is fabulous. Rich and expansive, with tremendous presence, the 2020 is positively stellar. Super-ripe dark cherry, lavender, spice and pomegranate all gain volume and intensity with time in the glass. The 2020 is one of the finest recent editions of the Francia Barbera I can remember tasting. Today, it's explosive, heady personality is impossible to resist.Antonio Galloni, Vinous 95 Points
